Book Synopsis Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900 by : Eva Eubank Wilkerson
Download or read book Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900 written by Eva Eubank Wilkerson and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1976 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Rappahannock County, originally embracing lands lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River, was organized in 1656 and was formerly a part of Lancaster County. In 1692 Old Rappahannock was abolished. The portion lying south of the river was taken to form Essex County, and the area north of the river formed the county of Richmond. Records of Old Rappahannock and Essex counties, on which this work is founded, date from 1655 and are on file at the courthouse in Tappahannock, Essex County. Some marriage bonds of the period 1804 to 1853 were previously copied into the marriage register, instituted as the official catalogue of marriages. In compiling this work, Mrs. Wilkerson used not only the marriage bonds found in the register and the marriage register itself, but also inferential marriage proofs derived from wills, deeds, and court order books. The result is a work of astonishing magnitude; the period covered runs to nearly 250 years and the number of persons namedΓ including brides, grooms, parents, and guardiansΓ touches 10,000. The text is arranged alphabetically throughout and includes the date of the marriage record and the source.

Book Synopsis Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800 by : Blanche Adams Chapman
Download or read book Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800 written by Blanche Adams Chapman and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1976 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marriages in this work are founded upon the records of the ancient shire of Isle of Wight and include marriages from the area of present-day Southampton County, erected from Isle of Wight in 1749. They derive chiefly from inferential sources, in particular will books, deed books, and order books, though marriage bonds, ministers' returns, and Quaker records also figure significantly in the list of sources. Since comparatively few marriage bonds or official marriage records of Isle of Wight County prior to the year 1800 survive, the great importance of this compilation is at once apparent. The marriages, with the exception of those based on ministers' returns, are arranged alphabetically by the name of the groom, following which is given the name of the bride, the name of a parent or surety, the date of the marriage or marriage record, and the exact source citation. Some 6,300 persons are identified, everyone of whom, including grooms, is cited in the index.

Book Synopsis The Kin Who Count by : Margaret L. Meriwether
Download or read book The Kin Who Count written by Margaret L. Meriwether and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Middle Eastern family presents as many questions as there are currently answers. Who lived together in the household? Who married whom and for how long? Who got a piece of the patrimonial pie? These are the questions that Margaret Meriwether investigates in this groundbreaking study of family life among the upper classes of the Ottoman Empire in the pre-modern and early modern period. Meriwether recreates Aleppo family life over time from records kept by the Islamic religious courts that held jurisdiction over all matters of family law and property transactions. From this research, she asserts that the stereotype of the large, patriarchal patrilineal family rarely existed in reality. Instead, Aleppo's notables organized their families in a great diversity of ways, despite the fact that they were all members of the same social class with widely shared cultural values, acting under the same system of family law. She concludes that this had important implications for gender relations and demonstrates that it gave women more authority and greater autonomy than is usually acknowledged.
