Book Synopsis Violence in America by : Ted Robert Gurr
Download or read book Violence in America written by Ted Robert Gurr and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1989-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence in America: The History of Crime presents a wealth of new research on the long-term dynamics of murder and other crimes of violence. The contributors clearly identify and diagnose the painful circumstances of recurring epidemics of violent crime that have swept the American society over the past 150 years. Among the possible causes discussed are waves of immigration, the social dislocations of war, and growing concentrations of urban poverty. In addition, this engaging volume offers an evaluation of the traits of political assassins and an assessment of the pros and cons of gun control--and whether or not it will help to reduce crimes of violence. Surprisingly, the contributors to this compelling volume present the idea that the past and present dynamics of violent crime, projected into the future, suggest grounds for cautious optimism. This outlook is based on recent increases in effective criminal justice policies and the widespread efforts to remedy the social disintegration that breeds violent crime. Students and professionals in history, criminology, victimology, political science, and other related fields will find this volume to be essential reading. (For both volumes) "This is a major, timely, and immensely welcome addition to the literature on violence in American society. With fresh scholarship and new insights, it updates a classic study of violence first published in 1969. It would make a valuable addition to courses on American social history as well as classes specifically addressing violence and crime in this society." --John J. Broesamle, California State University, Northridge

Download or read book Count the Dead written by Stephen Berry and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global doubling of human life expectancy between 1850 and 1950 is arguably one of the most consequential developments in human history, undergirding massive improvements in human life and lifestyles. In 1850, Americans died at an average age of 30. Today, the average is almost 80. This story is typically told as a series of medical breakthroughs—Jenner and vaccination, Lister and antisepsis, Snow and germ theory, Fleming and penicillin—but the lion's share of the credit belongs to the men and women who dedicated their lives to collecting good data. Examining the development of death registration systems in the United States—from the first mortality census in 1850 to the development of the death certificate at the turn of the century—Count the Dead argues that mortality data transformed life on Earth, proving critical to the systemization of public health, casualty reporting, and human rights. Stephen Berry shows how a network of coroners, court officials, and state and federal authorities developed methods to track and reveal patterns of dying. These officials harnessed these records to turn the collective dead into informants and in so doing allowed the dead to shape life and death as we know it today.

Book Synopsis The Medieval Coroner by : R. F. Hunnisett
Download or read book The Medieval Coroner written by R. F. Hunnisett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1961-01-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The office of coroner was established in England in 1194; it has had an unbroken history, and has been exported to many countries, including the United States. At the zenith of his power, in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, the coroner was concerned with many aspects of law and local administration, and with some of the most tragic and dramatic episodes of medieval life. Coroners - 'keepers of the pleas of the crown' - had to be knights or substantial landowners; they were required to hold inquests on victims of suicide or violent death, receive abjurations of the realm (ceremonial undertakings by felons in sanctuary to leave the country), hear appeals and confessions of felony, and legalise any exactions, outlawries or subsequent pardons. Their responsibilities included the arrest of suspects and the safeguarding of property subject to forfeit; the coroners' rolls contained the written records of many official proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, which is why this work shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of New York's sixty-two counties and where they can be found. In addition to the numerous statewide official censuses taken by New York, this work contains references to census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census. It also shows the location of copies of federal census records and provides county boundary maps and numerous state census facsimiles and extraction forms.
