Book excerpt: This work, the ninth in a series of books about Maryland families, focuses on the Purdum families, primarily of Montgomery and Frederick Counties. Having early origins in the area, and being rather prolific, the Purdum families intermarried with many of those families found in the first eight books of his series, and some of the information presented there will be repeated here, rather than requiring the reader to move back and forth between the various volumes in the series. Following the custom of the earlier works in this series, the book begins with a look at the early history of the Maryland Colony and the formation of the counties. From there, it moves into early Purdum family records, including John Purdum (born before 1700), who appears to be the progenitor of virtually all of the Purdums thus far identified in the study. John had at least four children, one of whom was James Purdum (born about 1720). James had at least one son, and probably several other children, but the one that the author has identified is yet another John Purdum (born about 1739). Individual chapters focus on: John Purdum and his family of at least eleven children, Walter Purdum, the descendants of Joshua Purdum, and others. Some family members, not identified within the framework of the principal family study are also touched on. A bibliography of over 100 titles testifies to the wide range of sources used in this compilation, and a full-name index supplies over 4,500 names. This book is a must for anyone researching the Purdum surname in this area.

Book excerpt: From its eighteenth-century roots as Benjamin Gaither's upstart central Maryland crossroads, Gaithersburg grew quickly into an early agricultural powerhouse. With the mighty roar of railroads came the rush of cultural prominence and the sweep of growth and prosperity. The city soon bloomed into a high-tech hub for the capital region and the nation. Witness to the march of time from Washington's Revolutionary campaigns to pivotal Confederate troop movements, Gaithersburg was also a waypoint for many early westbound settlers and is today situated in the frenzied center of East Coast traffic and communications. Gaithersburg: History of a City paints a colorful portrait of the town's early days when Montgomery County's wheat and tobacco fields gained agricultural muscle. Readers ride the rails of the Baltimore & Ohio as the breathless young town connects to Washington and the world beyond. The excitement of the boom times that followed comes to life with detailed stories of the days when science came to town. First, the city participated in an international experiment that gathered astronomical information still used today. The story continues when the National Institute of Standards and Technology moved in, initiating an even bigger boom and ushering in the modern research and development industry that made Gaithersburg a national hub of technology.

Book excerpt: Grouping a selection of papers from the 12th International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability, this book refers to all aspects of urban environment and provides solutions that lead towards sustainability. The series maintains its strong reputation and a substantial number of contributions have been made from a diverse range of transnational delegates, resulting in a variety of topics and experiences. Urban areas face a number of challenges related to reducing pollution, improving main transportation and infrastructure systems and these challenges can contribute to the development of social and economic imbalances and require the development of new solutions. The challenge is to manage human activities, pursuing welfare and prosperity in the urban environment, whilst considering the relationships between the parts and their connections with the living world. The dynamics of its networks (flows of energy matter, people, goods, information and other resources) are fundamental for an understanding of the evolving nature of today’s cities. Large cities represent a productive ground for architects, engineers, city planners, social and political scientists able to conceive new ideas and time them according to technological advances and human requirements. The multidisciplinary components of urban planning, the challenges presented by the increasing size of cities, the amount of resources required and the complexity of modern society are all addressed. The published papers cover the following fields: Urban strategies; Planning, development and management; The community and the city; Infrastructure and society; Eco-town planning; Spatial conflicts in the city; Urban transportation and planning; Conservation and regeneration; Architectural issues; Sustainable energy and the city; Environmental management; Flood risk; Waste management; Urban air pollution; Health issues; Water resources; Landscape planning and design; Intelligent environment; Planning for risk and natural hazards; Waterfront development; Case studies.
