Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an index to more than 5,000 songs and variations contained in 298 children's books published between 1909 and 1977. A few collections, published primarily as adult books but containing a large number of children's songs, have also been included. Only song books that contain music as well as lyrics have been indexed, with the exception of a few individual songs published in picture book format without music. The Index is divided into three parts. The first part, the LIST OF BOOKS INDEXED arranged alphabetically by author, contains complete bibliographical information on every song book, and assigns every one a location code. The TITLE AND FIRST LINE INDEX, contains song titles and first lines in one alphabet. First lines are printed in italic to distinguish them from titles, which are printed in roman. Each entry includes a title, or a first line, followed by a location code and page number. The SUBJECT INDEX lists song titles only, under more than 1,000 subject headings and cross references, alphabetically arranged. INDEX TO CHILDREN'S SONGS should prove a practical reference tool for all those who wish to find the music or lyrics of songs for children and young people-librarians, teachers in elementary and secondary schools, music instructors, children's entertainers, camp counselors, parents, and young people themselves. In particular, the wide range of headings in the Subject Index will be useful to anyone who must prepare programs for special occasions, whether in school or elsewhere.

Filling a gap in the sound recordings of traditional Anglo-American folk music this volume covers both vocal and instrumental material from the 1920s to the 1990s. The listings have also been limited to performers native to the tradition rather than "revival" performers. The album selection is grouped into field recordings and commercial (pre-1942) recordings, with subdivisions into individual recordings or anthologies. The discography not only reflects its author’s in-depth knowledge of Anglo-American folk music’s historical development but charts a valuable step forward in the evaluation, as well as select lissting, of available sound recordings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Ireland—its graces and shortcomings, triumphs and sorrows—is told by ballads, dirges, and humorous songs of its common people. Music is a direct and powerful expression of Irish folk culture and an aspect of Irish life beloved throughout the rest of the world. Incredibly, the largest single gathering of Irish folk songs had been almost inaccessible because, originally newspaper based, it was available in only three libraries, in Belfast, Dublin, and Washington D.C. Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” makes the music available to a wider audience than the collector ever imagined. Comprising nearly 690 selections, this thoroughly annotated and indexed collection is a treasure for anyone who performs, composes, studies, collects, or simply enjoys folk music. It is valuable as an outstanding record of Irish folk songs before World War II, demonstrating the historical ties between Irish and Southern folk culture and the tremendous Irish influence on American folk music. In addition to the songs themselves and their original commentary, Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” includes a glossary, bibliography, discography, index of titles and first lines, melodic index, index of the original sources of the songs and information about them, geographical index of sources, and three appendixes related to the original song series in the Northern Constitution.

Book excerpt: With this volume, incorporating Ballads 244-305, Bertrand Harris Bronson completes his epic task of providing the musical counterpart to Francis James Child's collection of English and Scottish ballads. As in the previous volumes, the texts are linked with their proper traditional tunes, systematically ordered and grouped to show melodic kinship and characteristic variations developed during the course of oral transmission. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
