Download or read book The Coming Jobs War written by Jim Clifton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitive leadership strategy for fixing the American economy, drawn from Gallup’s unmatched global polling and written by the company’s chairman. What everyone in the world wants is a good job. “This is one of the most important discoveries Gallup has ever made,” says the company’s Chairman, Jim Clifton. In a provocative book for business and government leaders, Clifton describes how this undeniable fact will affect all leadership decisions as countries wage war to produce the best jobs. Leaders of countries and cities, Clifton says, should focus on creating good jobs because as jobs go, so does the fate of nations. Jobs bring prosperity, peace and human development — but long-term unemployment ruins lives, cities and countries. Creating good jobs is tough, and many leaders are doing many things wrong. They’re undercutting entrepreneurs instead of cultivating them. They’re running companies with depressed workforces. They’re letting the next generation of job creators rot in bad schools. A global jobs war is coming, and there’s no time to waste. Cities are crumbling for lack of good jobs. Nations are in revolt because their people can’t get good jobs. The cities and countries that act first — that focus everything they have on creating good jobs — are the ones that will win. The Coming Jobs War offers a clear, brutally honest look at America’s biggest problem and a cogent prescription for solving it.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Bureau of Mines summarized injury data for independent contractor employees working at all locations of coal and metal-nonmetal mines from 1983 through 1990. During the eight years, the greatest contrast in degree of injury between independent contractor and operator employees was in fatalities. From 1983 through 1990, there were 132 independent contractor employee fatalities in the mining industry. In 1988, though, independent contractor employees accounted for nearly one-fourth of all mining fatalities. The fatality incidence rates of independent contractors were consistently higher than those of operators during the eight years. For instance, in 1990, the contractors' rate was twice that of operator employees in coal mining and nearly five times that of operators in metal-nonmetal mining. Three other salient facts highlight the independent contractor employees' fatality injury data during these years. First, 82% of the independent contractor employee fatalities occurred at surface locations. Second, two job classifications (truck driver and equipment operator) represented 37% of the fatalities throughout the 8-year period. And finally, four accident classifications (powered haUlage, slips and falls, machinery, and electrical) accounted for 71 % of all independent contractor employee fatalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independent Contractor vs. Employee Quagmire is a practical guide for companies and workers engaging in independent contractor relationships, as well as their tax professionals. A must-read for any company or worker who is contemplating a contractual relationship, taxpayers who are facing a federal or state or employment audit, and tax professionals. If a company treats workers as independent contractors and the IRS or state authorities can successfully reclassifies these workers as employees, this could ruin a business and the personal finances of those involved. This Action Guide is the product of the author's extensive experience in representing taxpayers before the IRS and California's EDD regarding independent contractor vs. employee controversies. Robert Sommers defines the leading concepts and how the IRS and the courts view various factors in the decision process. He points out the pitfalls and traps for the unwary and includes common-sense pointers on how to best protect the relationship from a later reclassification by the tax or labor authorities. Citations to case law and other legal precedents are contained in full in the reference section. As a full-time practicing attorney in the heart of San Francisco's Financial District, Robert Sommers owns and operates a law firm that specializes in general tax. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of tax law and has written hundreds of articles, columns, and action guides, and spoken at dozens of events.
