Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the plastic behaviour of compound semiconductors in the low temperature--high stress regime. Compressive stress-strain curves are calculated with models based on the formalisms of Alexander-Haasen or Schoeck extended to include simple glide/multiglide and one/three types of perfect dislocations with different mobilities. The impossibility to describe the crystal plasticity below some temperature with the available dislocation velocities data suggests a change in the controlling microscopic mechanisms. The negative photoplastic effect in GaAs is simulated. Modelling the response of the crystal to Vickers indentation is performed using elastic analytical expressions for the stress tensor: the stress distribution can be considered as nearly spherical although the plastic zone is far from it. Early stages of the formation of the plastic zone are described with the continuum crystal plasticity theory implementing the constitutive laws into the finite element method.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the ductile-brittle transition temperature of heavily doped silicon were carried out using indentation techniques. Diamond pyramid hardness tests were performed on the (100) face of heavily doped N-type and P-type and intrinsic silicon single crystals. Tests were performed over the range 200 C to 850 C and loads of 100 to 500 g were used. Samples were subsequently etched to reveal dislocation rosettes produced by indentation. Intrinsic silicon underwent a ductile-brittle transition at 660 C, P-type at 645 C and N-type at 625 C. Hardness values varied from 1.1 GPa at 700 C to 11.7 GPa at 200 C. Significant effects of hardness on doping were present only at the highest temperatures. Lower loads generally produced higher hardness but load did not affect the Ductile-Brittle Transition Temperature (DBTT). Fracture toughness values ranged from 0.9 MPa m(1/2) at 200 C to 2.75 MPa m(1/2) near the DBTT. Doping did not affect the fracture toughness of silicon. P-type doping increased the size of dislocation rosettes observed after indentation, but N-type did not, in contradiction of the expected results. Results are discussed in terms of the effect of doping on the dislocation mobility in silicon. Rybicki, George C. and Pirouz, P. Glenn Research Center RTOP 505-63-1A...

Book excerpt: This volume, number 91 in the Semiconductor and Semimetals series, focuses on defects in semiconductors. Defects in semiconductors help to explain several phenomena, from diffusion to getter, and to draw theories on materials' behavior in response to electrical or mechanical fields. The volume includes chapters focusing specifically on electron and proton irradiation of silicon, point defects in zinc oxide and gallium nitride, ion implantation defects and shallow junctions in silicon and germanium, and much more. It will help support students and scientists in their experimental and theoretical paths. Book excerpt: The book presents a collection of 25 original papers (including one review paper) on state-of-the art achievements in the theory and practice of crystals plasticity. The articles cover a wide scope of research on materials behavior subjected to external loadings, starting from atomic-scale simulations, and a new methodological aspect, to experiments on a structure and mechanical response upon a large-scale processing. Thus, a presented contribution of researchers from 18 different countries can be virtually divided into three groups, namely (i) “modelling and simulation”; (ii) “methodological aspects”; and (iii) “experiments on process/structure/properties relationship”. Furthermore, a large variety of materials are investigated including more conventional (steels, copper, titanium, nickel, aluminum, and magnesium alloys) and advanced ones (composites or high entropy alloys). The book should be interested for senior students, researchers and engineers working within discipline of materials science and solid state physics of crystalline materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume, "Plastic Deformation of Ceramics," constitutes the papers of an international symposium held at Snowbird, Utah from August 7-12, 1994. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists and engineers from more than a dozen countries representing academia, national laboratories, and industry. Two previous conferences on this topic were held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and 1983. Therefore, the last major international conference focusing on the deformation of ceramic materials was held more than a decade ago. Since the early 1980s, ceramic materials have progressed through an evolutionary period of development and advancement. They are now under consideration for applications in engineering structures. The contents of the previous conferences indicate that considerable effort was directed towards a basic understanding of deformation processes in covalently bonded or simple oxide ceramics. However, now, more than a decade later, the focus has completely shifted. In particular, the drive for more efficient heat engines has resulted in the development of silicon-based ceramics and composite ceramics. The discovery of high-temperature cupric oxide-based superconductors has created a plethora of interesting perovskite-Iike structured ceramics. Additionally, nanophase ceramics, ceramic thin films, and various forms of toughened ceramics have potential applications and, hence, their deformation has been investigated. Finally, new and exciting areas of research have attracted interest since 1983, including fatigue, nanoindentation techniques, and superplasticity.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to meet the demand for new ultra-high strength materials, the processing of novel material configurations with unique microstructure is being explored in systems which are further and further from equilibrium. One such class of emerging materials is the so-called nanophased or nanostructured materials. This class of materials includes metals and alloys, ceramics, and polymers characterized by controlled ultra-fine microstructural features in the form oflayered, fibrous, or phase and grain distribution. While it is clear that these materials are in an early stage of development, there is now a sufficient body of literature to fuel discussion of how the mechanical properties and deformation behavior can be controlled through control of the microstructure. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in the field of mechanical properties and deformation behavior in materials with ultra fine microstructure, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential for technological applications. The Institute was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Included in these discussions were the topics of superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Lectures were also presented which covered a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties.
