Book excerpt: A tutorial-style introduction to a class of methods for extracting independent signals from a mixture of signals originating from different physical sources; includes MatLab computer code examples. Independent component analysis (ICA) is becoming an increasingly important tool for analyzing large data sets. In essence, ICA separates an observed set of signal mixtures into a set of statistically independent component signals, or source signals. In so doing, this powerful method can extract the relatively small amount of useful information typically found in large data sets. The applications for ICA range from speech processing, brain imaging, and electrical brain signals to telecommunications and stock predictions. In Independent Component Analysis, Jim Stone presents the essentials of ICA and related techniques (projection pursuit and complexity pursuit) in a tutorial style, using intuitive examples described in simple geometric terms. The treatment fills the need for a basic primer on ICA that can be used by readers of varying levels of mathematical sophistication, including engineers, cognitive scientists, and neuroscientists who need to know the essentials of this evolving method. An overview establishes the strategy implicit in ICA in terms of its essentially physical underpinnings and describes how ICA is based on the key observations that different physical processes generate outputs that are statistically independent of each other. The book then describes what Stone calls "the mathematical nuts and bolts" of how ICA works. Presenting only essential mathematical proofs, Stone guides the reader through an exploration of the fundamental characteristics of ICA. Topics covered include the geometry of mixing and unmixing; methods for blind source separation; and applications of ICA, including voice mixtures, EEG, fMRI, and fetal heart monitoring. The appendixes provide a vector matrix tutorial, plus basic demonstration computer code that allows the reader to see how each mathematical method described in the text translates into working Matlab computer code.

Book excerpt: Read widely and read often - create a classroom environment where independent reading thrives Independent reading is more than just "drop everything and read" – it is a gateway to writing, critical thinking, discussion, and deeper learning. Author Jarred Amato, an accomplished middle and high school English teacher and founder of Project LIT Community, believes in the power of independent reading not only to turn around the reading attitudes of students but also to help them achieve huge gains in all areas of literacy, learning, and civic engagement. Many teachers have pushed aside independent reading in the time crunch to teach all the content and skills in the curriculum — or because of pressure to stay true to a traditional literary canon. Instead of looking at it as either/or, Just Read It shows teachers how to make independent reading "yes, and." Dr. Amato’s Read and WRAP (write, reflect, analyze, participate) framework helps teachers cultivate meaningful learning experiences with daily dedication of independent reading time, followed by writing, reflection, conversation, and community-building lessons and activities. With thoughtful, student-centered structures and strategies to sustain independent reading success, this book Provides detailed insights on transforming the principles of access, choice, time, and community into actions Shows how to support student interests and varied reading levels Offers ready-to-go activities to initiate Read and WRAP routines at the start of the school year, keep momentum going, and finish the year strong to ensure continued literacy growth Demonstrates how to leverage student feedback to fine-tune the Read and WRAP routines Discusses various options for incorporating independent and whole-class novels into the curriculum Offers a game plan to "level up" IR, including how to launch and lead a Project LIT chapter We live in a time when choosing what we read is critically important, and this book offers all the tools teachers need to guide students along the path to true literacy. Just Read It is perfect for anyone who believes in the power of books to change students’ lives and nurture a life-long love for reading.

Book excerpt: General Practice Nurses play an essential role in delivering care through general practice, taking on a spectrum of different responsibilities within patient care to support the ever-increasing workload within GP surgeries, clinics and health centres. Often working autonomously, as part of a multidisciplinary team, general practice nurses assess, advise and treat patients of all different ages and backgrounds, and therefore may encounter almost every aspect of patient care during their work. This book is specifically aimed at GP Nurses undertaking independent prescribing within the complexity of contemporary primary healthcare. It offers a complete overview for those taking on an independent nurse prescribing course as well as those nurses who have already qualified as independent prescribers. Case studies written for the general practice setting will help nurses build on the skills and practice they have already developed as they take on the independent prescribing role, and will also be of value to more experienced or advanced nurses hoping to refresh their existing knowledge. Written by a range of specialist authors, the book also covers the theoretical knowledge and context associated with independent prescribing, enabling GP nurses to practise competently and confidently and deliver clinically effective, person-centred care.

When visiting patients in their own homes or in residential care homes, district nurses are required to deal with a range of health and social care needs, often in unpredictable and changing environments. As part of the increasingly complex care district nurses offer to patients, independent prescribing can also enable a timely and effective response to providing patient-centred care. This book is specifically aimed at district nurses undertaking independent prescribing within the complexity of contemporary primary health care. It will help district nurses build on the skills and practice they have developed as community nurse prescribers as they develop into the independent prescribing role. District nurses also need to consider autonomous decision making in prescribing practice whilst prescribing as part of a wider health care team, supporting patients to self-manage and considering individual patient and family factors to maintain wellbeing and positive outcomes. Bringing together a range of specialist authors, the book covers the theoretical knowledge and context associated with independent prescribing, enabling district nurses to practice competently and confidently to deliver clinically effective, person-centred care. It offers a complete overview for those taking an independent nurse prescribing course as well as district nurses who have already qualified as independent prescribers.
