Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a practical and feasible means of providing teacher consultation that can be used to improve class-wide behavior in a middle school setting. A multiple-baseline design across four teachers was utilized to evaluate the effects of an intervention involving training and ongoing performance feedback via email on a) teachers' use of behavior-specific praise (BSP), general praise (GP), and reprimands (R) in the classroom, and b) the incidence of problem behaviors in classes of middle school students. The study also assessed whether behavioral changes were sustained over time, as the frequency of emailed feedback was reduced and eventually terminated. As expected based on previous research, the intervention was effective in increasing use of behavior-specific praise (BSP) in the classroom across all four participating teachers. Overall ratios of positive (BSP and GP) to negative (R) statements used by teachers in the classroom increased post-intervention; however, the degree of this increase varied by teacher, with three out of four approaching or exceeding the commonly-recommended 4:1 ratio, while one teacher did not. Results on the observational measure of student behavior were mixed, with two out of four classes showing significant decreases in problem behavior, one with decreases which were non-significant, and the class in which the teacher showed the lowest use of BSP demonstrated no change in student behavior. Findings from the current study provide evidence that it is possible to successfully increase teachers' use of specific praise, thereby reducing class-wide rates of middle school student problem behavior, through a simple training and ongoing emailed performance feedback procedure. Limitations of the study and additional implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Of further interest was the extent to which training led to teachers' maintained praise and generalized praise use in untrained classes. Students' disruptive behaviors were measured concurrently to test the relationship between increased praise use and decreases in students' inappropriate behavior in the classroom. Increasing the frequency of teachers' use of praise statements with students for engaging in appropriate behavior has shown subsequent reduction in the occurrence of classroom disruptions resulting in less time that a teacher spends addressing inappropriate behaviors. Ultimately, this results in more time available for instruction and feedback to students. The current study found that use of in situ direct training resulted in an increase in high school teachers' use of BSP in the classroom where the training occurred. Three of the four participants required one brief performance feedback session to maintain a substantial increase in BSP over baseline rates, but all participants ultimately maintained a rich rate of BSP in the class where training occurred. Additionally, generalization of increased use of BSP was evident, although three of the four participants required a simple generalization prompt to bring about this end. Student level of disruptive behavior decreased as a result of the increase in BSP. Results from this study are discussed in terms of the consultation literature and implications for applied practice.

This study proposed to examine to what extent instructional consultation with performance feedback increases teacher behavior in implementing targeted elements of quality instruction as well as student engagement and literacy skill acquisition. Teachers from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at an urban middle school took part in instructional consultation with weekly performance feedback. Observations were conducted and single case design with combined concurrent and non-concurrent multiple baseline was utilized to determine treatment effect. Results indicated an effect on use of random response in instruction and an overall increase in student engagement. Implications for these findings are discussed as they relate to the consultation literature and practical applications for school psychologists.
