Book excerpt: Excerpt from Increasing Forage Yields and Sheep Production on Intermountain Winter Ranges Most of the information on effects of grazing intensity on herbage production was obtained from a series of 20 fenced range pastures (fig. Sixteen of these were 320 acres in area and four were 240 acres. Six of the 20 pastures were grazed lightly, six moderately, and six heavily during either one or a combination of two grazing periods of the winter grazing season, as follows: Early, middle, late; early and middle; early and late; and middle and late winter. These periods were arbitrarily established by dividing the winter grazing season into three equal periods of about 50 days. Early winter included the period November 15 to January 3; middle winter, January 4 to February 23; and late winter, February 24 to April 10. The other two pastures were grazed in the middle winter period, one moderately and one at a heavy intensity similar to that on much of the general winter range. Ranges Of the Intermountain Region are usually separated into. Three major classes: Summer, spring-fall, and winter - according to the season during which they are generally grazed. All of the seasonal ranges overlap to some extent. The range types and principal forage species of the seasonal ranges are briefly listed in tabulation4 on page 6. Only the general aspect of the seasonal range is given and no attempt is made to list all of the cover types and plant species. The months given are the most com mon ones for sheep, but the exact dates vary from year to year and from one part of the region to another. Summer ranges of the mountains can be used only during the sum mer because they are deeply covered with snow the rest of the year. On the other hand, it is necessary to await snowfall before sheep can be taken onto most desert or semidesert areas. Lack of a stock water supply other than snow forces the use of these ranges during the winter only. Much of the spring-fall range is limited to a short season of use while stock water is available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grazing Spring-Fall Sheep Ranges of Southern Idaho Most of the 18 to 20 million acres of spring-fall range in southern Idaho are covered by the sagebrush-grass vegetation type. The spring-fall ranges of this type lie largely on the Snake River Plains, in a roughly crescent-shaped belt along the Snake River from the Wyoming to the Oregon State lines. Some of them lie also in adjacent tributary valleys. They are generally located between the winter feed-lot areas in the irrigated section and the mountainous range lands used for summer grazing. Sheep graze these ranges for several weeks in the spring during and following lambing. At that time, the ewes need palatable, highly digestible, nutritious young grasses and weeds to keep up-their flow of milk. Lambs too, require tender and succulent forage. Then in the fa'll sheep again use many of these ranges during and after breeding. Consequently, forage production on these spring-fall ranges directly influences the percentage lamb crop, the size of lambs and condition of ewes sent to summer range, and the wool production. Plant growth 011 the Spring-fall ranges begins early (march 1 to 15 on the lower Snake River Plains to April 10 on the upper Plains). The ranges are generally ready for grazing within 2 or 8 weeks after growth starts. They are grazed for 4 to 8 weeks until the grasses and weeds begin to dry. As the forage dries it loses much of its nutritive value. Sheep are then moved to mountainous summer ranges where they can obtain succulent forage. The drying forage 011 well-managed Spring-fall ranges cures rather well in the usual absence of summer rains, and, together with any new green growth made as a result of fall rains, provides a fairly satisfactory ration for sheep during the fall before they go to the winter feed lot. The characteristics that make well - managed Spring-fall ranges de sirable for sheep grazing are: (1) Abundant production of palatable and nutritious forage for ewes and lambs from early Spring until sum mer ranges are ready for grazing, (9) availability of satisfactory forage for ewes in fall, (3) reliable forage production in years of favorable and unfavorable weather alike, and (4) relatively open stands of sagebrush that permit easy sheep movement over the range. Book excerpt: Although there is an abundance of material available concerning forage consumption by livestock on pasture land and in the feed lot, there is relatively little known about the grazing habits and forage preferences of livestock under range conditions. There has been still less scientific effort expended toward solving the riddle of the grazing animal's diet under winter range conditions. Investigators have suggested means to determine the quantity of forage available on range areas, the carrying capacities of range lands, and methods of determining the degree to which forage has been utilized. The diet of the foraging animal is affected by the quantity of forage available, and the capacity of range lands to support grazing and the degree to which various species are utilized are directly dependent upon the diet, yet virtually nothing is known about the actual compositions of this diet as selected by the animal on the range. There is need for additional scientific information concerning choice of species by the foraging animal and the factors which affect this selection. Basic information of this nature must be known before scientific range management can be applied. Sheep are known to prefer certain plants, and likewise certain portions of these plants. In addition weather, stage of maturity, intensity of use, and plant associations all affect the sheep's diet, and make interpretations and calculations still more complex. This study was designed to determine on the winter range the quantity of forage available to grazing animals, the species composition of the animal's diet, and to evaluate, where possible, factors affecting the diet.
