Book Synopsis Physical Properties and Thermodynamic Behaviour of Minerals by : Ekhard K.H. Salje

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role played by earth sciences in the scientific community has changed considerably during this century. Since the revolutionary discoveries of global processes such as plate tectonics, there has been an increasing awareness of just how fundamental many of the mechanisms which dominate in these processes depend on the physical properties of the materials of which the earth is made. One of the prime objectives of mineral sciences is now to understand and predict these properties in a truly quantitative manner. The macroscopic properties which are of most immediate interest in this context fall within the conventional definitions of thermodynamics, magnetism, elasticity, dielectric susceptibilities, conductivity etc. These properties reflect the microscopic contributions, at an atomistic level, of harmonic and anharmonic lattice vibrations, ionic and electronic transport as well as a great variety of ordering and clustering phenomena. The advances made by solid state physicists and chemists in defining the underlying phenomena lnvolved in the thermal evolution of materials have stimulated major new research initiatives within the Earth Sciences. Earth Scientists have combined to form active groups within the wider community of solid state and materials scientists working towards a better understanding of those physical processes which govern not only the behaviour of simple model compounds but also that of complex materials like minerals. Concomitant with this change in direction has come an increasing awareness of the need to use the typical working tools of other disciplines.

Download or read book Oxides / Oxide written by E. Nakamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-12-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume III/28 is a supplement to volume III/16a+b Ferroelectrics and Related Substances. It also consists of two parts a and b. The present subvolume III/28a contains data on ferroelectric oxides, supplementing III/16a which appeared in 1981. Subvolume III/28b, due in 1990, will cover non-oxides, supplementing III/16b (published in 1982). Reliable data on both pure compounds and solid solutions, published mostly between 1978 and 1986 and some data from the literature up to early 1988 are critically evaluated and included. The dielectric and ferroelectric behaviour, as well as all other properties relevant to the characterization of these substances are presented in tables and figures. About 22,000 references have been surveyed with the aid of a computer. All values are given in SI units. Rapid localization of the required data is facilitated by an alphabetical index of substances and a two-dimensional survey of substances and properties dealt with in both subvolumes III/28a and III/16a.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much progress has been made in the understanding of the general properties of the dielectric function and in the calculation of this quantity for many classes of media. This volume gathers together the considerable information available and presents a detailed overview of the present status of the theory of electromagnetic response functions, whilst simultaneously covering a wide range of problems in its application to condensed matter physics. The following subjects are covered: - the dielectric function of the homogeneous electron gas, of crystalline systems, and of inhomogeneous matter; - electromagnetic fluctuations and molecular forces in condensed matter; - electrodynamics of superlattices.

Book Synopsis The Physics of Structural Phase Transitions by : Minoru Fujimoto
Download or read book The Physics of Structural Phase Transitions written by Minoru Fujimoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for readers with some prior knowledge of condensed-matter physics, this text emphasises the basic physics behind spontaneous structural changes in crystals. Starting with the relevant thermodynamic principles, the author discusses the nature of order variables and their collective motion in a crystal lattice. He also goes on to describe experimental methods for modulated crystal structures and gives examples of structural changes in representative systems. Both a graduate text and reference work.
Book Synopsis Structural Phase Transitions II by : K. Alex Müller
Download or read book Structural Phase Transitions II written by K. Alex Müller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Phase Transitions II, like its predecessor (Topics in Current Physics, Vol. 23), presents selected methods and recent advances in the experimental investigation of phase transitions in solids. The two chapters in this volume deal with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and with nuclear magnetic and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NMR-NQR). Both techniques are particularly sensitive to local properties. The chapter on EPR concentrates largely on the investigation of static properties, including mean-field behaviour, critical and multicritical phenomena, whilst NMR is shown to be a powerful tool for studying nonlinear dynamics, incommensurate transitions, and disordered systems. This book will serve as an excellent introduction to the methodology and applications of EPR and NMR-NQR for all those wishing to become acquainted with these important tools for studying structural phase transitions.
Book Synopsis Methods Of Structural Analysis Of Modulated Structures And Quasicrystals by : Perez-mato J M
Download or read book Methods Of Structural Analysis Of Modulated Structures And Quasicrystals written by Perez-mato J M and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-10-31 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By introducing the superspace formalism, the methods of structure analysis of incommensurate structures have achieved in the past few years a full maturity. The superspace description is also becoming in the field of quasicrystals the main tool to approach a systematic method of structure determination of these materials. According to the program of the Workshop, these proceedings are an introduction to the formalism and practice of structure determination of modulated structures (incommensurate and commensurate) and quasiperiodic systems, mainly under the unifying framework of the superspace description. Accordingly, a large set of tutorial introductory chapters written by well-known specialists are included. The main refinement programs available for incommensurate structures are presented by their authors. The book also contains the most recent contributions from more than thirty of the participants in the Workshop, focusing on the problem of the structure analysis of these typical materials by means of diffraction methods.

Book Synopsis Ferroelectric Phenomena in Crystals by : Boris A. Strukov
Download or read book Ferroelectric Phenomena in Crystals written by Boris A. Strukov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of the application of ferroelectric crystals in engineering as well as of a number of fundamental problems of solid-state physics, which have not yet been solved and which bear a direct relation to ferro electricity, has lately stimulated much interest in the problem of ferroelectricity. In courses of solid-state physics ferroelectricity is studied today along with traditional disciplines, such as magnetism, superconductivity, and 'semiconducting phe nomena. Moreover, new specialities have been born concerned directly with the development and utilization of ferroelectric material~ in optics, acous tics, computer technology, and capacitor engineering. Special courses in the physics of ferroelectrics are read in a number of colleges and universities. The study of the nature of ferro electricity has currently reached such a level of development that we may speak of having gained a rather deep insight into the physical essence of a number of phenomena, which contribute to the generation of a spontaneous electric polarization in crystals. It is exactly at this level that it has become possible to single out that part of the problem, the physical picture of which can be depicted in a rather unsophisticated manner and which is the foundation for the construction of a building of "complete understanding".
