Book excerpt: Various multiple aperture optical arrays were compared while imaging objects illuminated with incoherent light. The aperture arrays contained from one to four sub-apertures. The objects were edges, slits, rectangles and circles. An emphasis was placed on edge resolution, and the author derived his own set of resolution criteria. Based on this analysis, a tight square four-element array was the best performer. The study concluded with an analysis of design criteria for optimum incoherent imaging resolution. Max sub-aperture size, min sub-aperture spacing, max number of sub-aperture elements, and a symmetric pattern were all determined to be desirable in order to obtain the best performance.

Multiple aperture telescopes are a candidate technology for the Strategic Defense Initiative missions of surveillance, tracking, and kill assessment. In this thesis, the multiaperture images of edges, slits, rectangles, and circles were theoretically predicted and experimentally produced. Photographs of the actual images produced in the lab were compared to the theoretical images, and the analytical and computer prediction techniques were found to be accurate. All of the results were analyzed to determine how different multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture imaging produces edge enhancement. The position of a single edge could be found exactly, while multiple edges sometimes produced slight edge shifts. A computer program was developed tat predicts that edge shifts that will be observed when imaging through a given multiple aperture. Larger subaperture spacings were found to exhibit better resolution but produced more ringing about the edges. The possibility of rotating the multiple aperture system to gather more information was discussed, as well as designs that include a central subaperture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential reference for optical sensor system design This is the first text to present an integrated view of the optical and mathematical analysis tools necessary to understand computational optical system design. It presents the foundations of computational optical sensor design with a focus entirely on digital imaging and spectroscopy. It systematically covers: Coded aperture and tomographic imaging Sampling and transformations in optical systems, including wavelets and generalized sampling techniques essential to digital system analysis Geometric, wave, and statistical models of optical fields The basic function of modern optical detectors and focal plane arrays Practical strategies for coherence measurement in imaging system design The sampling theory of digital imaging and spectroscopy for both conventional and emerging compressive and generalized measurement strategies Measurement code design Linear and nonlinear signal estimation The book concludes with a review of numerous design strategies in spectroscopy and imaging and clearly outlines the benefits and limits of each approach, including coded aperture and imaging spectroscopy, resonant and filter-based systems, and integrated design strategies to improve image resolution, depth of field, and field of view. Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in optical sensor design. In addition to its direct applicability to optical system design, unique perspectives on computational sensor design presented in the text will be of interest for sensor designers in radio and millimeter wave, X-ray, and acoustic systems.

Book excerpt: Incoherent holographic imaging technologies, in general, involve multiple optical components for beam splitting,Äîcombining and shaping,Äîand in most cases, require an active optical device such as a spatial light modulator (SLM) for generating multiple phase-shifted holograms in time. The above requirements made the realization of holography-based products expensive, heavy, large, and slow. To successfully transfer the holography capabilities discussed in research articles to products, it is necessary to find methods to simplify holography architectures. In this book chapter, two important incoherent holography techniques, namely interference-based Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) and interferenceless coded aperture correlation holography (I-COACH), have been successfully simplified in space and time using advanced manufacturing methods and nonlinear reconstruction, respectively. Both techniques have been realized in compact optical architectures using a single static diffractive optical element manufactured using lithography technologies. Randomly multiplexed diffractive lenses were manufactured using electron beam lithography for FINCH. A quasi-random lens and a mask containing a quasi-random array of pinholes were manufactured using electron beam lithography and photolithography, respectively, for I-COACH. In both cases, the compactification has been achieved without sacrificing the performances. The design, fabrication, and experiments of FINCH and I-COACH with static diffractive optical elements are presented in details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in physics and electronics and communication engineering and mathematics. The book provides an introduction to Fourier optics in light of new developments in the area of computational imaging over the last couple of decades. There is an in-depth discussion of mathematical methods such as Fourier analysis, linear systems theory, random processes, and optimization-based image reconstruction techniques. These techniques are very much essential for a better understanding of the working of computational imaging systems. It discusses topics in Fourier optics, e.g., diffraction phenomena, coherent and incoherent imaging systems, and some aspects of coherence theory. These concepts are then used to describe several system ideas that combine optical hardware design and image reconstruction algorithms, such as digital holography, iterative phase retrieval, super-resolution imaging, point spread function engineering for enhanced depth-of-focus, projection-based imaging, single-pixel or ghost imaging, etc. The topics covered in this book can provide an elementary introduction to the exciting area of computational imaging for students who may wish to work with imaging systems in their future careers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical resolution of a multiple mirror telescope can be studied through its Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). Using the figure of merit that the mirrors be moved apart in a manner that would maximize the spatial frequency at which the first zero appears in the MTF, this thesis studied the use of MTF information from multiple wavelengths to delay the appearance of an interior zero in the overall MTF. This would allow the mirrors to be moved further apart and thereby increase the frequency at which the first zero appears in the MTF, increasing the resolving capability of the system. Symmetrical configurations from three to six mirrors were studied. Each configuration was initially manually optimized at three microns, then the system was studied at a three to five micron range to see if the MTF information from other wavelengths would delay the appearance of an interior zero in the overall system MTF, thus allowing an increase in the distance between mirrors. An optimization routine was also employed to see if there were other, nonsymmetrical, mirror configurations that could possibly yield a better theoretical resolution than their symmetrical counterparts. Keywords: Multiaperture, Synthetic Aperture, Incoherent Imaging. (AW).

These techniques have stimulated further development of the optical imaging theory, including 3-dimensional microscopy imaging theory, the theory of imaging with ultrashort pulsed beam illumination and the aberration theory for high numerical-aperture objectives. This book introduces these new theories in modern optical microscopy, providing comparisons with classical imaging as appropriate.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
