Book excerpt: We have studied hadron production in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy using the PEP-4 Time Projection Chamber Detector. The inclusive cross sections and mean multiplicities for .pi./sup + -/, K/sup + -/ and (p + anti p) production have been measured using ionization energy loss to separate particle species. We find on average 10.7 +- 0.6 .pi./sup + -/, 1.35 +- 13 K/sup + -/ and 0.60 +- 0.08 (p + anti p) per multihadron event. The differential cross section is well described by a number of Monte Carlo hadronization models. In addition, we have observed correlations in rapidity space for identified pions and kaons. Short-range KK correlations provide evidence for local flavor compensation during hadronization. Long-range .pi pi. and KK correlations indicate that the initial partons carry flavor. We also observe significant long-range .pi. K correlations as a result of heavy quark decays. 85 references, 67 figures, 11 tables.

Book excerpt: Recent results on particle production in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV are reviewed. The data were obtained using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1. The mean charged particle multiplicity in gluon jets from the three-jet events is found not to differ from that measured for quark jets. The production of the scalar meson S(975) and the tensor mesons f°(1270) and K*(1430) are observed and the rates are compared to the previously observed vector mesons, rho and K*(890). Finally, some of the global properties of charged particle production are presented and compared with similar results from soft hadronic collisions. 16 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have measured the production rates of prompt electrons and muons in hadronic events from ee− annihilation at 29 GeV. The inclusive rate per hadronic event for leptons with total momenta greater than 2 GeV/c is determined to be (0.033 +- 0.003 +- 0.012) for electrons and (0.037 +- 0.005 +- 0.008) for muons. We measure the longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra of these leptons. The harder transverse momentum spectrum of leptons from bottom and charm quark relative to charm decays allows us to separate the bottom and charm quark contributions to the prompt lepton signal. The longitudinal momentum distributions allow us to study the fragmentation properties of these heavy quarks. For charm quarks we find average semileptonic branching ratios of (6.4 +- 1.3 +- 2.8)% into electrons and (8.1 +- 1.6 +- 1.8)% into muons. For bottom quarks we find average branching ratios of (12.9 +- 2.5 +- 2.0)% into electrons and (12.2 +- 5.0 +- 3.0)% into muons. The fragmentation function for bottom quarks is determined to be peaked at large z with z/sub b/ approx. = 0.75. 46 references.

Book excerpt: D* production is studied in the decay chain D* .-->. D° .pi. with the D° observed in the K−.pi.+ mode and the corresponding charge conjugate decays. The results were obtained from a preliminary analysis of an 80 pb−1 data sample of e+e− annihilations at 29 GeV taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The excellent mass resolution of the HRS allows the study of the D* production and decay with very low background. We present the fragmentation function over the range of Z from 0.2 to 1.0.
