Going out to the farm, Greeley finds Mr and Mrs Baker and their son dead, Detmeyer badly wounded, and their two daughters missing. Book Synopsis The Confederate Official Reports of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern by : H. L. Hanna
Download or read book The Confederate Official Reports of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern written by H. L. Hanna and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2010 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Elkhorn tavern has been called the "Battle that saved Missouri for the Union", I prefer to know it as the "Battle that doomed Missouri to the Union". In these pages I have culled the reports made by the Confederate commanders that were collected by the U.S. War Department from the records captured after the fall of Richmond in 1865. These records were published in the massive 128 volume The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. These reports are excerpted from Series 1, Volume VIII, pages 281-330. A map and list of units composing General Van Dorn's Trans-Mississippi Army and enumeration of losses from Volume 1 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War have also been attached. I have also added short biographical footnotes of some of the lesser known commanders, as well as photographs of many of the writers. These first hand accounts, most written within a few weeks of the Battle, offer a first hand look at not only the actions of the participants on the days of the Battle, but also at their after action thoughts on the Battle, and sometimes their own justifications and excuses for decisions made in the literal heat of combat.
Download or read book Water in Kentucky written by Brian D. Lee and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three essays examining the biophysical and the historical and contemporary stories of water’s impact on communities throughout Kentucky. Home to sprawling Appalachian forests, rolling prairies, and the longest cave system in the world, Kentucky is among the most ecologically diverse states in the nation. Lakes, rivers, and springs have shaped and nourished life in the Commonwealth for centuries, and water has played a pivotal role in determining Kentucky’s physical, cultural, and economic landscapes. The management and preservation of this precious natural resource remain a priority for the state’s government and citizens. In this generously illustrated book, experts from a variety of fields explain how water has defined regions across the Commonwealth. Together, they illuminate the ways in which this resource has affected the lives of Kentuckians since the state’s settlement, exploring the complex relationship among humans, landscapes, and waterways. They examine topics such as water quality, erosion and sediment control, and emerging water management approaches. Through detailed analysis and case studies, the contributors offer scholars, practitioners, policy makers, and general readers a wide perspective on the state's valuable water resources. Praise for Water in Kentucky “Simply outstanding! Water in Kentucky offers an exciting close-up view of what happens to the water that falls on the Commonwealth. You’ll be fascinated by the many innovative projects your neighbors are implementing to clean polluted runoff and to restore attractive wetlands and streams. This volume will guide you in taking action to improve water quality in your community for the benefit of people, plants, and wildlife.” ―Thomas R. Biebighauser, author of Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair “This collection of 23 essays expertly covers the intricate relationship between water and our daily lives. These essays could easily serve as springboards for conversation in conservation and policy implementation for the future. This book stands as an important addition to the study of water resources in Kentucky.” ―Kentucky Libraries “A labor of love and a remarkable example of persistence and commitment by its editors Brian D. Lee, Daniel I. Carey, and Alice L. Jones, and a wide variety of invited contributors. This book goes a long way toward weaving together many perspectives to create a better overall picture of the relevance of water in Kentucky.” ―Groundwater

Book excerpt: A forgotten gunslinger battles modern-day gangsters At seventy-one, the Wind River Kid is a kid no longer. In the last days of the Old West, he was feared in gambling halls across the country, a hard-nosed card shark who didn’t mind killing to prove a point. When he had gotten his fill of violence, he moved back to Elkhorn, a lonely mountain town that died bit by bit, its population dwindling until he was the only one left. It’s 1927 now, but to the aged Kid, it may as well be 1875. He’s been alone for decades, comforted only by the ghosts of a vanished West—until the modern world comes to visit, guns blazing. A dangerous young couple comes to Elkhorn looking for a place to hide out from the killers on their tail. Wild River just wanted to be left alone, but he will have to take up the gun again if he is ever to rest in peace.

Download or read book Elkhorn written by Richard Taylor and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When former Kentucky Poet Laureate Richard Taylor took a job at Kentucky State University in 1975, he purchased a fixer-upper—in need of a roof, a paint job, city water, and central heating—that became known to his friends as "Taylor's Folly." The historic Giltner-Holt House, which was built in 1859 and sits close by the Elkhorn Creek a few miles outside of Frankfort, became the poet's entrance into the area's history and culture, and the Elkhorn became a source of inspiration for his writing. Driven by topophilia (love of place), Taylor focuses on the eight-mile stretch of the creek from the Forks of the Elkhorn to Knight's Bridge to provide a glimpse into the economic, social, and cultural transformation of Kentucky from wilderness to its current landscape. He explores both the natural history of the region and the formation of the Forks community. Taylor recounts the Elkhorn Valley's inhabitants from the earliest surveyors and settlers to artist Paul Sawyier, who memorably documented the creek in watercolors, oils, and pastels. Interspersed with photographs and illustrations—contemporary and historic—and intermixed with short vignettes about historical figures of the region, Elkhorn: Evolution of a Kentucky Landscape delivers a history that is by turns a vibrant and meditative personal response to the creek and its many wonders. Flowing across four counties in central Kentucky, Elkhorn Creek is the second largest tributary of the Kentucky River. Known for its beauty and recreational opportunities, Elkhorn Creek has become an increasingly popular location for canoeing, kayaking, and camping and is one of the state's best-known streams for smallmouth bass, bluegills, and crawfish. Like Walden Pond for Henry David Thoreau, the Elkhorn has been a touchstone for Taylor. A beautiful blend of creative storytelling and historical exploration of one of the state's beloved waterways, Elkhorn celebrates a gem in the heart of central Kentucky.
