La rama de la ciencia que estudia el papel de los incendios en los organismos y los ecosistemas (la ecología del fuego) proporciona la base científica para mejorar la gestión del territorio en ambientes donde los incendios tienen un papel preponderante. Para poder realizar una gestión sostenible de los recursos es necesario tener una base sólida sobre los procesos implicados y esta obra aporta algunos de esos conocimientos básicos al público en general y, en especial, a los estudiantes, profesores, gestores e investigadores interesados en la ecología, así como a todas las personas aficionadas a la naturaleza.

El libro está dividido en dos partes claramente diferenciadas: - Estudio de las características forestales de la provincia y detalles del número de incendios ocurridos durante un periodo de años, analizando las causas, su distribución en el tiempo, etc. - Análisis de una serie de incendios que se han generado en la provincia desde los años ochenta hasta la actualidad, detallando los de mayor tamaño o potencialmente peligrosos durante los trabajos de extinción. El contenido de este libro es fundamentalmente práctico. Todos los casos que se incluyen están planteados de una forma muy didáctica para, mediante un Banco de Arena, poder recrear de una forma económica y rápida, el desarrollo y fases de cada incendio. Manuel Díaz Tapia es Ingeniero Técnico Forestal. Inicia su trayectoria laboral en el mundo de los incendios forestales en el año 1981 en la provincia de Toledo, posteriormente se incorpora al Instituto de Conservación de la Naturaleza en la provincia de Huesca entre 1982 y 1985, en febrero de 1986, ingresa en el cuerpo de Ingenieros Técnicos Forestales de Estado, y es destinado a la provincia de Cuenca, hasta julio de 1987. Posteriormente se traslada a Toledo, donde desarrolla su actividad en el ámbito forestal, fundamentalmente dedicado a los incendios forestales, participando en la dirección de extinción en siniestros ocurridos en las cinco provincias de Castilla-La Mancha. Actualmente, es Director del COP (Centro de Operaciones Provincial) de Toledo, ha participado durante 37 años en campañas de lucha contra los incendios forestales y como Director de Extinción en más de cien incendios forestales.
