Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting new WMU book series' volume features the first attempt to include detailed experiences of women in the maritime sector at a global level. It highlights the achievement of women in the maritime sector, in particular, women’s leadership and service to the sustainable development of the maritime industry. The volume contains contemporary studies on maritime women and follows an inter-disciplinary approach. It offers an overview of women's integration into the maritime sector since the late 1980s as well as benchmarking its impact on various levels, such as policy, employment, education, leadership and sustainability. Even 20 years after the Beijing Declaration, gender-related challenges at work still remain in the maritime sector, for example, lack of gender policy, difficulty in work-life balance, access to education, and leadership opportunities. The book addresses a series of recommendations that may further help the integration of women into the maritime sector.

Book Synopsis The IMLI Treatise On Global Ocean Governance by : David Joseph Attard
Download or read book The IMLI Treatise On Global Ocean Governance written by David Joseph Attard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) remains the cornerstone of global ocean governance. However, it lacks effective provisions or mechanisms to ensure that all ocean space and related problems are dealt with holistically. With seemingly no opportunity for revision due to the Conventions burdensome amendment provisions, complementary mechanisms dealing with such aspects of global ocean governance including maritime transport, fisheries, and marine environmental sustainability, have been developed under the aegis of the United Nations and other relevant international organizations. This approach is inherently fragmented and unable to achieve sustainable global ocean governance. In light of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14, the IMLI Treatise proposes a new paradigm on the basis of integrated and cross-sectoral approach in order to realise a more effective and sustainable governance regime for the oceans. The volume examines how the IMO, with 171 Member States and 3 Associated Members, has and continues to promote the goals of safe, secure, sound, and efficient shipping on clean oceans. It studies the interface and interaction between UNCLOS and IMO instruments and how IMOs safety, security, and environmental protection conventions have contributed to global ocean governance, including the peaceful order of the polar regions.

Book Synopsis Gender and the Law of the Sea by : Irini Papanicolopulu
Download or read book Gender and the Law of the Sea written by Irini Papanicolopulu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listen to the podcast with Nilufer Oral on 'Climate Change, Oceans and Gender' In Gender and the Law of the Sea a distinguished group of law of the sea and feminist scholars critically engages with one of the oldest fields of international law. While the law of the sea has been traditionally portrayed as a technical, gender-neutral set of rules, of concern to States rather than humans, authors in this volume persuasively argue that critical feminist perspectives are needed to question the underlying assumptions of ostensibly gender-neutral norms. Coming at a time when the presence of women at sea is increasing, the volume forcefully and successfully argues that legal rules are relevant to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women at sea, in an effort to render law for the oceans more inclusive. Telling a fascinating story, the authors emphasise what the women themselves have had to say, in diaries, memoirs, letters and recorded interviews about the call up, their personal reactions to war, their feelings about pay and the company at work, the effects of war on their health, their relations with men and their home lives; they speak too about how demobilisation affected them, and how they spent the years between two World Wars.

It is a valuable source of information for students of traditional maritime law as well as for those who seek to understand maritime and shipping services on a global scale. The text includes information and analytical content on national and international practices in shipping, including the age-old dichotomy between freedom in international shipping and the persistent demands of states to control specific maritime areas, as well as the tension between, on the one hand, the desire on the part of sovereign states to regulate and protect their shipping interests and, on the other, the abiding concern and unquestioned right of the international community to regulate the global shipping industry effectively, in order to ensure maritime safety, protection of the environment and fair competition.
Book Synopsis Women who Kept the Lights by : Mary Louise Clifford
Download or read book Women who Kept the Lights written by Mary Louise Clifford and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of American women have kept the lamps burning in lighthouses since Hannah Thomas tended Gurnet Point Light in Plymouth, Massachusetts, while her husband was away fighting in the War for Independence. Women Who Kept the Lights details the careers of 32 intrepid women who were official keepers of light stations on the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific Coasts, on Lake Champlain and the Great Lakes, staying at their posts for periods ranging from a few years to half a century. Most of these women served in the nineteenth century, when the keeper lit a number of lamps in the tower at dusk, replenished their fuel or replaced them at midnight, and every morning polished the lamps and lanterns to keep their lights shining brightly. Several of these stalwart women were commended for their courage in remaining at their posts through severe storms and hurricanes. A few went to the rescue of seamen when ships capsized or were wrecked. Their varied stories paint a multifaceted picture of a unique profession in our maritime history.

Download or read book Shipping Law written by Martin Davies and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Fifth Edition of this well-respected text on Australian maritime law reflects captures the many developments that have occurred since the last edition published in 2016 and includes comparative reference to English and American law. It considers three fundamental developments that will change the whole environment of shipping over the next decade: Impacts of new technology on the way ships operate and on international carriage, particularly how the advent of blockchain technology has facilitated the use of electronic negotiable bills of lading; The rapid development of autonomous and remotely-controlled vessels and the way this impacts existing international conventions; and Amendment of the MARPOL convention to apply to carbon emissions effective from 2023, with legally enforceable targets for carbon reduction that have to be met by 2030. Other new developments include: Case law on cross-border insolvency, arising from the impacts of the Cross-Border Insolvency Act 2008 (Cth) on maritime liens; The 2016 decision by the Full Court of the Federal Court on recognition of foreign maritime liens, in Reiter Petroleum v Ship Sam Hawk; The 2018 decision by the NSW Court of Appeal relating to "house" bills of lading issued by freight forwarders, in Cro Solutions Pty Ltd v Australia Capital Financial Management Pty Ltd; Multiple decisions on ship registration, arising from Re Coco Saba Pty Ltd, Motor Yacht Sales Australia Pty Ltd v Megisti Yacht Charters Ltd, and Mentink v Registrar of Australian Register of Ships; The 2018 decision by the Federal Court in The Thor Commander affecting several areas, including the passing of rights under straight bills of lading, seaworthiness obligations under voyage charterparties, bills of lading, and salvage; The question of incorporating charterparty terms into bills of lading; and Divergence between Australian and UK law on matters of marine insurance."--
