Download or read book Silent Summer written by Norman Maclean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years dramatic declines have taken place in UK insect populations. Eventually, such declines must have knock-on effects for other animals, especially high profile groups such as birds and mammals. This authoritative, yet accessible account details the current state of the wildlife in Britain and Ireland and offers an insight into the outlook for the future. Written by a team of the country's leading experts, it appraises the changes that have occurred in a wide range of wildlife species and their habitats and outlines urgent priorities for conservation. It includes chapters on each of the vertebrate and major invertebrate groups, with the insects covered in particular depth. Also considered are the factors that drive environmental change and the contribution at local and government level to national and international wildlife conservation. Essential reading for anyone who is interested in, and concerned about, UK wildlife.
Book Synopsis Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises by : Erich Hoyt
Download or read book Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises written by Erich Hoyt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of the widely praised Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, published in 2005, led to numerous new marine protected area proposals and a number of notable conservation successes around the world. In this completely revised and expanded second edition, new developments in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific are described, as well as future directions for High Seas protection. New sections show how to design and manage MPAs in an ever noisier ocean subject to climate change, increased shipping and hydrocarbon exploration. The process of protected area creation for cetaceans has been accelerated and more than 200 exciting new places are detailed in this edition. This book provides a route map for MPA managers, as well as countries, to meet the ambitious targets for highly protected MPA networks by 2012 and 2020. This book is a key conservation tool and a springboard for worldwide change in human attitudes toward the world ocean where all life originated and where the majority of life on Earth still lives.

Book Synopsis The Albatross and the Fish by : Robin W. Doughty
Download or read book The Albatross and the Fish written by Robin W. Doughty and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding on remote ocean islands and spending much of its life foraging for food across vast stretches of seemingly empty seas, the albatross remains a legend for most people. And yet, humans are threatening the albatross family to such an extent that it is currently the most threatened bird group in the world. In this extensively researched, highly readable book, Robin W. Doughty and Virginia Carmichael tell the story of a potentially catastrophic extinction that has been interrupted by an unlikely alliance of governments, conservation groups, and fishermen. Doughty and Carmichael authoritatively establish that the albatross's fate is linked to the fate of two of the highest-value table fish, Bluefin Tuna and Patagonian Toothfish, which are threatened by unregulated commercial harvesting. The authors tell us that commercial fishing techniques are annually killing tens of thousands of albatrosses. And the authors explain how the breeding biology of albatrosses makes them unable to replenish their numbers at the rate they are being depleted. Doughty and Carmichael set the albatross's fate in the larger context of threats facing the ocean commons, ranging from industrial overfishing to our habit of dumping chemicals, solid waste, and plastic trash into the open seas. They also highlight the efforts of dedicated individuals, environmental groups, fishery management bodies, and governments who are working for seabird and fish conservation and demonstrate that these efforts can lead to sustainable solutions for the iconic seabirds and the entire ocean ecosystem.

Download or read book I'm Single, Ok? written by Talia Good and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it really OK to be single? This is the question explored by Talia Good, as she shares her life's journey of pain and joy as a single woman, draws from the experiences of others, and searches the Scriptures and other material for the answers. Many women do not marry. Why is this so? Countless voices tell the single woman that she is odd and has failed in some way. Is there any truth in this? Can the single woman be truly fulfilled and happy? How can she cope with the challenges of loneliness, sexual frustration, aging and financial issues? These are just some of the questions that Ms. Good raises and frankly discusses with the intention of fostering a greater understanding of the issues facing single women today. Talia Good grew up on a sheep farm in the far south of New Zealand, surrounded by mountains, bush and the sea. Her love of nature led her to study Zoology and graduate with a Masters Degree in Natural Resource Management. For several years she worked as an advisory scientist for the New Zealand government in matters of land and nature reserve management. While still at high school however Talia met the Lord Jesus and in the following years felt Him calling her to live in Israel. In 1984 she left her homeland and went to Israel where she has lived ever since. Now she works at the American International School in Israel, as a consultant and coordinator in the Science Department. She lives with her little dog, Tami, in a small suburban house in a city on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
