Book Synopsis Into Our Own Hands by : Sandra Morgen
Download or read book Into Our Own Hands written by Sandra Morgen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent history has witnessed a revolution in womens health care. Beginning in the late 1960s, women in communities across the United States challenged medical and male control over womens health. Few people today realize the extent to which these grassroots efforts shifted power and responsibility from the medical establishment into womens hands as health care consumers, providers, and advocates. Into Our Own Hands traces the womens health care movement in the United States. Richly documented, this study is based on more than a decade of research, including interviews with leading activists; documentary material from feminist health clinics and advocacy organizations; a survey of womens health movement organizations in the early 1990s; and ethnographic fieldwork. Sandra Morgen focuses on the clinics born from this movement, as well as how the movements encounters with organized medicine, the state, and ascendant neoconservative and neoliberal political forces of the 1970s to the1980s shaped the confrontations and accomplishments in womens health care. The book also explores the impact of political struggles over race and class within the movement organizations.

Book Synopsis In Their Own Hands by : Jeffrey Ashe
Download or read book In Their Own Hands written by Jeffrey Ashe and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two and a half billion people worldwide, most of them desperately poor villagers, need a better way to save and to borrow. Even the most innovative banking institutions can’t reach them; savings groups can. In savings groups, members save what they can in a communal pot and loan their growing fund to each other for their short-term needs. Jeffrey Ashe and Kyla Neilan illustrate how these savings groups form and function and how little “outside” support is actually required for their success. Drawing on decades of Ashe’s personal experience, this book describes how he developed Saving for Change, which leveraged the wisdom and strength of group members to train and establish new groups. This model has impacted the lives of 680,000 people across five countries. Savings groups are a “catalytic innovation” that bypasses subsidies, dependency, and high costs while effectively reducing chronic hunger, building assets, and empowering the community. Today, saving groups have 9 million members around the globe—with minimal support, membership could grow to ten times this number.

Book Synopsis Permission Granted--Take the Bible into Your Own Hands by : Jennifer Bird
Download or read book Permission Granted--Take the Bible into Your Own Hands written by Jennifer Bird and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people around the world look to the Bible as a source of encouragement and faith formation, a reminder that God is love and is in control, and a guide to living one's life the way God desires. But this treasured book has also been misused and manipulated by many, placed on a pedestal of untouchability, and protected from questioning and honest engagement. In Permission Granted, Jennifer Grace Bird encourages people of faith to explore the texts on their own, freed from long-held myths and misconceptions; experience the Bible anew; and appreciate this holy book for what it isâ€"not what we think it should be. With the sensitivity of one who has discovered this freedom herself, Bird invites readers to engage what the Bible really says about twelve key issues, including sin, sex, and the role of women.
Book Synopsis Taking Matters into Our Own Hands by : Christopher Signil
Download or read book Taking Matters into Our Own Hands written by Christopher Signil and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Matters into Our Own Hands is the decision of activists, leaders, politicians, clergy, and concerned citizens to use their influence to its highest potential, in both conventional and nonconventional measures, to shine a light on unjust beatings and homicides of unarmed African Americans. Violence permeates our society, but when that violence comes at the hands of those charged with protecting us and upholding the law, public trust is shattered, and the rights to which every citizen is entitled are called into question. We must let the perpetrators of these unjust beatings and homicides know that a foundation built on lies and cover-ups cannot stand. This is not the idea of engaging in unlawful, divisive forms of protest or rhetoric, but rather coming to the conclusion that you are the agent of change that you want to see—that all individuals are qualified to use their voices, their cell phones, their social media, their music, their resources, their legal minds, their political connections, their creative ability, their God-given talents, whatever they may be, to let the world know that this unjust killing must come to an end!
Book Synopsis The Law Into Their Own Hands by : Roxanne Lynn Doty
Download or read book The Law Into Their Own Hands written by Roxanne Lynn Doty and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Border security and illegal immigration along the U.S.–Mexico border are hotly debated issues in contemporary society. The emergence of civilian vigilante groups, such as the Minutemen, at the border is the most recent social phenomenon to contribute new controversy to the discussion. The Law Into Their Own Hands looks at the contemporary nativist, anti-immigrant movement in the United States today. Doty examines the social and political contexts that have enabled these civilian groups to flourish and gain legitimacy amongst policy makers and the public. The sentiments underlying the vigilante movement both draw upon and are channeled through a diverse range of organizations whose messages are often reinforced by the media. Taking action when they believe official policy is lacking, groups ranging from elements of the religious right to anti-immigrant groups to white supremacists have created a social movement. Doty seeks to alert us to the consequences related to this growing movement and to the restructuring of our society. She maintains that with immigrants being considered as enemies and denied basic human rights, it is irresponsible of both citizens and policy makers to treat this complicated issue as a simple black or white reality. In this solid and theoretically grounded look at contemporary, post-9/11 border vigilantism, the author observes the dangerous and unproductive manner in which private citizens seek to draw firm and uncompromising lines between who is worthy of inclusion in our society and who is not.
Book Synopsis Taking the Law into their Own Hands by : Bruce Baker
Download or read book Taking the Law into their Own Hands written by Bruce Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over much of Africa, crime and insurgency are a serious problem and one in which the distinction between the two is being eroded. Left without state protection people have sought to preserve their lives and property through vigilante groups and militias that pay scant attention to the law or human rights. Likewise, the state security forces, under pressure to cut crime and rebel activity, readily discard lawful procedures. Torture provides them with vital information, whilst extra-judicial executions save the need to go through the prolonged criminal justice system. After a general overview of the role of the rule of law in a democratic society, Bruce Baker provides five case studies that capture the current complex realities and their impact on the new democracies. The citizen responses considered are vigilantes in East African pastoral economies, The Bakassi Boys an anti-crime group in Nigeria and private policing initiatives in South Africa. The state responses are those of the Ugandan Defence Forces towards the Lords Resistance Army, the Senegalese army towards the Casamance secessionists and the Mozambique Police response towards criminals.
