Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptosporidium is a genus of protozoan parasites that causes diarrheal disease in humans and other animals. There are two major species that cause disease in humans: C. parvum, which infects both humans and animals, and C. hominis, which primarily infects humans. A recent study investigating the etiologies of pediatric diarrheal illness in Africa and South Asia found that Cryptosporidium is the 2nd most prevalent cause of diarrhea in infants and may be a contributing factor to chronic malnutrition. This discovery has led to renewed interest in studying this parasite and a reexamination of the barriers to studying Cryptosporidium. The main obstacle hindering research on this parasite is that it cannot be propagated in vitro and instead must be passaged through large animals such as calves to generate infectious oocysts. The cell culture models that are available rely on adenocarcinoma cells and only support a few days of growth and do not enable complete life cycle development in vitro. These limitations have stalled the development of research tools for investigating Cryptosporidium biology and have also slowed developmental progress of new therapies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivation of malaria parasites is an important tool for the understanding of parasite biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and pharmacology. Malaria represents the world's greatest public health problem in terms of number of people affected, levels of morbidity and mortality. The protozoan malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) are transmitted by infected female mosquitoes when feeding on blood. Parasites soon enter liver cells, and after several days of multiplication, are released into the bloodstream where further cycles of asexual reproduction occur, giving rise to the clinical symptoms of malaria. Some erythrocytic parasites will differentiate into presexual forms (gametocytes), which when taken up by mosquitoes in further blood meals, mature into gametes and undergo a sexual cycle Malaria is one of the most important infectious diseases affecting humans particularly in developing countries. P. falciparum an apicomplexan protozoan parasite is the causative agent of the most lethal form of human malaria.

The disease is the foremost health challenge in Africa south of the Sahara, and people traveling to malarious areas are at increased risk of malaria-related sickness and death. This book examines the prospects for bringing malaria under control, with specific recommendations for U.S. policy, directions for research and program funding, and appropriate roles for federal and international agencies and the medical and public health communities. The volume reports on the current status of malaria research, prevention, and control efforts worldwide. The authors present study results and commentary on the: Nature, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and epidemiology of malaria. Biology of the malaria parasite and its vector. Prospects for developing malaria vaccines and improved treatments. Economic, social, and behavioral factors in malaria control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing wisdom and ingenuity are required if we are to master our environment and cope with the myriad of organisms that affect our existence. Not the least of these organisms are the parasites and pathogens which can be found in all animals. The ecological implications of parasitism are obvious, and the interrelationships among different organisms within the same host are fascinating, but more knowledge and understanding are needed. The symposium are held to stimulate discussion of the significance of ecological problems presented by parasites and to develop means of attacking some of these problems. The diversity of parasitism from protozoa to anthropods was emphasized and the speakers and topics were selected to interest those in various biological disciplines and professions. Organized by the Department of Parasitology in the School of Hygiene of the University of Toronto, and held at Toronto in February 1970, the symposium was an unqualified success. The enthusiastic interest, indicated by the attendance of over three hundred people from seven countries, and numerous requests for copies of the proceedings led to the publication in this volume of the twelve papers presented at the symposium. The opening remarks of the leader of the discussion which follow each paper have been included and a complete bibliography is provided for each topic. The contributors are leading specialists in their fields; their papers present the results of the most recent research and assemble and review the scattered literature on each topic. The text is illustrated throughout with diagrams and photographs. Parasitism and associated phenomena are excellent examples of problems requiring the interdisciplinary approach taken by the symposium. The results of such an approach are useful in a wide variety of disciplines: microbiology, invertebrate zoology, entomology, and tropical medicine, as well as parasitology.

Book excerpt: Giardia and Cryptosporidium are both parasites of considerable global interest due to the gastrointestinal problems these organisms can cause in humans as well as domestic and wild animals. Despite its long history as the causative agent of giardiasis, the clinical and zoonotic significance of Giardia infections in humans and animals is only beginning to emerge with the application of molecular tools. Less is known about Cryptosporidium and studies seek to understand the impact of infection in livestock and other animals, its epidemiology and zoonotic significance. Presenting a comprehensive overview of recent research this book draws on the experience of experts in all fields of Giardia and Cryptosporidium research.
