Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Day With John Milton Milton still retained much of that personal comeliness which had won him, at Cambridge, the nickname of Lady of Christ's College. His original red and white had now become a uniform pallor; his thick, light brown hair, parted at the top, and curling richly on his shoulders-{no close-cropt Roundhead this!) was beginning to fade towards grey. But his features were noble and symmetrical; he was well-built and well-proportioned; and he was justified in priding himself upon a personal appearance which he had never neglected or despised. In his own words, he was neither large nor small: at no time had he been considered ugly; and in youth, with a sword by his side, he had never feared the bravest. Such was the man who now, neatly dressed in black, was led into his study, upon the same floor as his bedroom, a small chamber hung with rusty green, - and there, seated in a large old elbow chair, received the morning salutations of his three daughters. It was written during the great war of a hundred years ago, the struggle against the devouring am bitiou of Napoleon. It is dated 1802, a time of facile jubilation, no doubt, to those who did not or could not look ahead, but a time of utter gloom to one who, like Wordsworth, exalted the war as a holy war for great principles of Liberty and Good Faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Life, Opinions, and Writings of John Milton Splendid passages, and what is usually called fine writing, will not be found in this volume. I have little talent and still less taste for them, for I have usually found the brilliants to be false, composed of metaphor, paradox, and antithesis. But Truth is singplew mundz'tiz's the habit in which she loves to appear is simple, chaste in hue, formed to display her fair lineaments and pro portions, and put on at times with an air of graceful negligence. All that I ever then aim at is perspicuity, purity, and correctness of language, carefully shunning stiffness and affectation, and happy if now and then I can approach to vigour or amenity. I would fain have the idea of the writer absorbed and lost in the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Milton Lives by this popular author, except what are borrowed from Addison's criticism on the great Epic Poem. Immediately after Johnson's death, Thomas War ton published his edition of the Juvenile Poems.' In the preface and notes he scattered many anti dotes to Johnson's poison, which restored the minds of the lovers of true poetry to their proper tone: but it had not much effect with the multi tude, who resolved to nurse the tasteless dogmas which seemed to justify their own insensibility. The Wartons were men of the romantic school of poetry, which had gone out of fashion from the introduction of the French school at the restore tion of Charles II. The days of chivalry were gone and the picturesque requires a nicety of eye and brightness of fancy, which are not the endowments of the many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose Writings of John Milton There are omitted from this volume all the writings in which Milton replied to the Opponents of his views. The controversies of 250 years ago travelled by many paths in which we care no longer to assert a right of way. At all times, the Reformer who is answering opponents has his course of argument determined by the reason or the unreason Of other men. Forms of reply dependent upon accidents Of the attack are only to be read with measured judgment by those who have read the attack also and Often when we have read both, we have heard a sound of battle in the air that has appealed to our imaginations and disturbed our judgment. The battle Of Opinion rolls forward to new ground from century to century. The great truths are immutable, the applications Of them vary with the change of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Minor Poems of John Milton The form of this book has been determined by the same considerations which influenced me in the preparation of my volume of Selections from Paradise Lost, I had learned from my observation of nearly two thousand pupils in literature that Milton's erudition makes it impossible for pupils of secondary school age to read his works intelligently without a definite preparation, through the study of certain conceptions with which he, in common with all the educated classes of his time, was perfectly familiar. Among these were the conceptions in regard to physical science which prevailed during the Middle Ages, the myths which are found in the Greek and Roman classics, and the religious dogmas held by the Christian world in the seventeenth century. Bass Mullinger, author of The History of the University of Cambridge and other highly esteemed works, and left entirely in his hands. But the pressure Of many other claims upon his time and attention has made it impossible for him to carry out this arrangement; and as Mr. Masterman, Of his college, whose literary ability was already well known, had assisted Mr. Mullinger' in his researches for the proposed volume, I was glad to agree that to him the main part of the work should be transferred, and feel sure readers will congratulate themselves on the substitute SO fortunately secured. Both of these groups I shall briefly consider, as well as the circumstances under which some of them were written, so far as it is necessary for a correct understanding of them, and perhaps may dwell some what upon the merits and limitations of the form in which he wrote. In what I say of the Sonnet in gen eral, I shall invoke the aid of the poets themselves who have written such verse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Milton Epoch The series of which this volume is the fourth may be said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. 'Scrappiness' is a charge to which all such collections are open; but I have tried to lessen its force by the preponderance of lyric songs, and the insertion of Comus and Book VI. of Paradise Lost complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Milton: Englishman; Partly in His Own Words Probably the description is strongly coloured by the poet's recollection of his own childhood. At the time when the portrait was painted the boy's tutor was Thomas Young, a Scotsman, graduate of St. Andrew's, then a curate in London, afterwards to be eminent among the Puritan clergy. Milton has' left on record his reverence and gratitude towards Young, who seems to have continued his oversight of the boy's supplementary studies after he became a pupil of St. Paul's School in St. Paul's Churchyard in 1619 or 1620.
