Book excerpt: **The 2022 Lammy Award Winner in Transgender Nonfiction** Exploring the intersections of Blackness, gender, fatness, health, and the violence of policing. To live in a body both fat and Black is to exist at the margins of a society that creates the conditions for anti-fatness as anti-Blackness. Hyper-policed by state and society, passed over for housing and jobs, and derided and misdiagnosed by medical professionals, fat Black people in the United States are subject to sociopolitically sanctioned discrimination, abuse, condescension, and trauma. Da’Shaun Harrison--a fat, Black, disabled, and nonbinary trans writer--offers an incisive, fresh, and precise exploration of anti-fatness as anti-Blackness, foregrounding the state-sanctioned murders of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people in historical analysis. Policing, disenfranchisement, and invisibilizing of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people are pervasive, insidious ways that anti-fat anti-Blackness shows up in everyday life. Fat people can be legally fired in 49 states for being fat; they’re more likely to be houseless. Fat people die at higher rates from misdiagnosis or nontreatment; fat women are more likely to be sexually assaulted. And at the intersections of fatness, Blackness, disability, and gender, these abuses are exacerbated. Taking on desirability politics, the limitations of gender, the connection between anti-fatness and carcerality, and the incongruity of “health” and “healthiness” for the Black fat, Harrison viscerally and vividly illustrates the myriad harms of anti-fat anti-Blackness. They offer strategies for dismantling denial, unlearning the cultural programming that tells us “fat is bad,” and destroying the world as we know it, so the Black fat can inhabit a place not built on their subjugation.

Book excerpt: The remarkable first-hand account of Vinh Chung, a Vietnamese refugee, and his family’s daring escape from communist oppression for the chance of a better life in America. Discover a story of personal sacrifice, redemption, endurance against almost insurmountable odds, and what it truly means to be American. Vinh Chung was born in South Vietnam, just eight months after it fell to the communists in 1975. His family was wealthy, controlling a rice-milling empire worth millions; but within months of the communist takeover, the Chungs lost everything and were reduced to abject poverty. Knowing that their children would have no future under the new government, the Chungs decided to flee the country. In 1979, they joined the legendary “boat people” and sailed into the South China Sea, despite knowing that an estimated two hundred thousand of their countrymen had already perished at the hands of brutal pirates and violent seas. Where the Wind Leads follows Vinh Chung and his family on their desperate journey from pre-war Vietnam. Vinh shares: The family’s perilous journey through pirate attacks on a lawless sea Their miraculous rescue and a new home in the unlikely town of Fort Smith, Arkansas Vinh’s struggled against poverty, discrimination, and a bewildering language barrier His graduation from Harvard Medical School Where the Wind Leads is Vinh’s tribute to the courage and sacrifice of his parents, a testimony to his family’s faith, and a reminder to people everywhere that the American dream, while still possible, carries with it a greater responsibility.

Book excerpt: "Into the Belly of the Beast we crawl with Ashe as our guide; into the dark visceral spaces where love, lust, descent and desire work their transformative magic and we find ourselves utterly altered in the reading. A truly gifted poet and truth-spiller, Ashe's metaphors create images within images, leading us to question the subjective truths, both shared and hidden, in personal relationship - to the other, and to oneself. Unflinching in her approach, her poetry gives voice to that which most struggle to admit - even if only to themselves. And as such, Belly of the Beast is a work of startling courage and rich depth - a darkly delicious pleasure." - Amy Palko

Book excerpt: SciFi aficionado Avery Blake and sorceress of suspense Ninie Hammon team up to bring you The Hidden. This is the third book in The Taken Saga, a terrifying tale of alien invasion told from the perspective of three very special young people. The Flood is coming. Star has a vision that she paints on the gymnasium floor of the Zion Village: a black starship shooting a beam of light at the polar ice caps, melting them and flooding the world. Papa Eagle Feather claims that Star’s vision is the fulfillment of a prophecy about a child from the stars who will save her people. With her warning, they’ve been given six days advance notice — six days to figure out how to survive the flood. Can they build “Noah’s Ark” in less than a week? Noah says they don’t have to build anything — they already have an ark. They can survive underground in the hundreds of miles of the labyrinthine tunnels and chambers of Matheson Caverns — but they only have a few days to load three thousand people and supplies inside. Then Paco shows up from California with an army to kill the Kentuckians and steal their refuge. As the battle between them rages, the flood shows up a day earlier than they’d calculated. Now it’s a desperate race against time. Star, Noah, and Papa Eagle Feather must fight their way through Paco and his armed killers, scrambling to get thousands of people underground as the water floods the valley below the caverns and begins to rise up toward the only entrance. The Hidden is the third book in the new alien invasion series, The Taken Saga, by Avery Blake and Ninie Hammon. Get The Hidden and continue your new favorite science fiction series today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unpacks the character of pornographic representations of queer Black masculinity and how these representations vary between corporate and noncorporate producers. The author argues that representations of Black men in gay porn rely on stereotypes of Black masculinity to arouse consumers, especially those which characterize Black men as "missing links" or focus excessively on their "dark phalluses." Moreover, these depictions consistently separate gay Black and white men’s sexuality into bifurcated discursive spaces, thereby essentializing sexual aspects of racial identity. Lastly, though such depictions are less prevalent in user-submitted videos, overall, both user-submitted and corporate content reify stereotypes about Black masculinity. This book is written for researchers, lecturers, and graduate courses in the social sciences and humanities, including Sociology, Social Psychology, Sexuality, African American Studies, Women and Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Culture and Art Studies, Porn Studies, Social Media Studies, and Public Health.

Book excerpt: Young colonists find themselves stranded on an unpopulated moon—and not as alone as they thought—in a series debut from the author of The Red Bishop. The year is 2221 and humans have colonized Thetis, a planet in the Silver Foot galaxy. After a tragic accident kills dozens of teenage colonists, Thetis’s leaders are desperate to repopulate. So Earth sends the Mayflower 2—a state-of-the-art spaceship—across the universe to bring new homesteaders to the colony. For orphaned teen Jonah Lincoln, the move to Thetis is a chance to reinvent himself, to be strong and independent and brave, the way he could never be on Earth. But his dreams go up in smoke when their ship crash-lands, killing half the passengers and leaving the rest stranded—not on Thetis, but on its cruel and unpopulated moon, Achilles. Between its bloodthirsty alien life forms and its distance from their intended destination, Achilles is a harrowing landing place. When all of the adult survivors suddenly disappear, leaving the teenage passengers to fend for themselves, Jonah doubts they’ll survive at all, much less reach Thetis—especially when it appears Achilles isn’t as uninhabited as they were led to believe. Praise for Greg Boose’s The Red Bishop “Boose’s prose is quick, dark, exciting. He’s got the thriller element dialed. There are shades of Stephen King in the breathless horror of it all. This isn’t your everyday YA novel, there’s way more to it.” —Lauren Herstik, Nerdist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM EXCITING AUTHOR OF WHY CHOOSE ROMANCE ANGELA ADDAMS Book one in the Hell Hath No Fury series Hell hath no fury like a werewolf scorned. All I'd ever wanted was to blend in among the humans, but my stepbrothers had other plans. When one of them sent a thug to abduct me, I had to let my true self out, claws and all. That was the thing... The men in my world were always underestimating me. Being the hothead that I was, I went straight to the source of the problem—the new alpha of my family's clan, my stepbrother Sal. He had a surprise of his own, though, and when he hit me with a magically infused pure silver collar, I crumbled like I didn't have A-plus DNA in my blood. That was when the Duke brothers entered my life. Heroes in their own minds, they worked a deal with Sal to buy me... as if I were a commodity. To the males in my species, that was what I was, but to the Duke brothers I was the final piece in a prophecy puzzle. They wanted me to rule their clan, be alpha to their pack, which meant they wanted me to take the bites of all three of them. To that I said, not on your life, boys. But, damn, they were hot, and I was willing to give cohabitation a try. I'd explore their old-world scrolls and prints and listen to their fairy tales about a superpowered queen alpha. I could even get behind training with their pack, but I wasn't ever going to let a werewolf take a bite out of me. At least that was what I kept telling myself. The beast inside me had other plans, and I'd never truly known how to stop her from getting what she wanted, no matter who she might have to destroy to achieve her goals.
