Book excerpt: The terms phase transitions and phase transformations are often used in an interchangeable manner in the metallurgical literature. In Phase Transformations, transformations driven by pressure changes, radiation and deformation and those occurring in nanoscale multilayers are brought to the fore. Order-disorder transformations, many of which constitute very good examples of continuous transformations, are dealt with in a comprehensive manner. Almost all types of phase transformations and reactions that are commonly encountered in inorganic materials are covered and the underlying thermodynamic, kinetic and crystallographic aspects elucidated. - Shows readers the advancements in the field - due to enhanced computing power and superior experimental capability - Drawing upon the background and the research experience of the authors, bringing together a wealth of experience - Written essentially from a physical metallurgists view point

This book was released on 2014-06-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an insight into current research topics, focusing special attention exactly on welding issues. The presented research work demonstrates that application of synchrotron and neutron radiation in combination with other techniques enables the basic understanding of material-related processes to be extended appreciably. It also shows ways of how to improve new materials and their use in industry. Following on from the 1st workshop in 2009 at BAM Berlin, a 2nd workshop dealing with this subject matter was held in 28-30 November, 2012 in Osaka/Japan with international participation of scientists from sixteen countries. The book includes selected contributions from the various subject blocks, precisely covering issues of practical and immediately implementable benefit to industrial enterprises. Therefore, peer-reviewed papers dealing with the following topics are contained as well: - Phase transformation during welding, metallurgy and material development - Evolution and significance of residual stresses - Investigations into laser and electron beam welding

Book Synopsis Structure Induced Anelasticity in Iron Intermetallic Compounds and Alloys by : Igor S. Golovin
Download or read book Structure Induced Anelasticity in Iron Intermetallic Compounds and Alloys written by Igor S. Golovin and published by Materials Research Forum LLC. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different anelastic phenomena are discussed in this book with respect to iron-based binary and ternary alloys and intermetallic compounds of Fe3Me type, where Me are α-stabilizing elements Al, Ga, or Ge. An introduction into anelastic behavior of metallic materials is given, and methods of mechanical spectroscopy and neutron diffraction are introduced for the better understanding of structure-related relaxation and hysteretic phenomena. To characterize structure and phase transitions - both first and second order - in the studied alloys XRD, TEM, SEM, MFM, VSM, PAS, DSC techniques were used. Considerable emphasis is placed on in situ neutron diffraction tests that were performed with the same heating and cooling rates as the internal friction measurements. Different types of mechanical spectroscopy techniques were used to study mainly, but not exclusively, Fe-Al, Fe-Ga and Fe-Ge based alloys: from subresonance “low” frequency forced bending and torsion vibrations (0.00001 to 200 Hz) to “high” frequency resonance (above ~200 Hz) free decay bending vibrations. We discuss (1) thermally activated effects like Snoek-type relaxation, caused by interstitial atom jumps in alloyed ferrite, (2) Zener relaxation, caused by reorientation of pairs of substitute atoms in iron, (3) different transient effects due to phase transitions of the first and second order, and (4) amplitude dependent magneto-mechanical damping; especially with respect to structure, ordering of substitutional solid solution and phase transitions. Special attention is paid to magnetostriction of the alloys - the result of magneto-mechanical elastic coupling.
Book Synopsis Phase Transformations in Materials by : G. Kostorz
Download or read book Phase Transformations in Materials written by G. Kostorz and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2001-10-25 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all kinds of materials, phase transformations show common phenomena and mechanisms, and often turn a material, for example metals, multiphase alloys, ceramics or composites, into its technological useful form. The physics and thermodynamics of a transformation from the solid to liquid state or from one crystal form to another are therefore essential for creating high-performance materials. This handbook covers phase transformations, a general phenomenon central to understanding the behavior of materials and for creating high-performance materials. It will be an essential reference for all materials scientists, physicists and engineers involved in the research and development of new high performance materials. It is the revised and enhanced edition of the renowned book edited by the late P. Haasen in 1990 (Vol. 5, Materials Science and Technology).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The triennial International Alloy Conferences (lACs) aim at the identification and promotion of the common elements developed in the study, either experimental, phenomenological, or theoretical and computational, of materials properties across materials types, from metals to minerals. To accomplish this goal, the lACs bring together scientists from a wide spectrum of materials science including experiment, theory, modeling, and computation, incorporating a broad range of materials properties. The first lAC, lAC-I, took place in Athens, Greece, June 16-21, 1996. The present volume of proceedings contains the papers presented at IAC-2, that took place in Davos, Switzerland, August 8-13, 1999. The topics in this book fall into several themes, which suggest a number of different classification schemes. We have chosen a scheme that classifies the papers in the volume into the categories Microstructural Properties; Ordering, Kinetics and Diffusion; Magnetic Properties and Elastic Properties. We have juxtaposed apparently disparate of revealing the dynamic character approaches to similar physical processes, in the hope of the processes under consideration. We hope this will invigorate new kinds of discussion and reveal challenges and new avenues to the description and prediction of properties of materials in the solid state and the conditions that produce them.
