Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued evaluation of existing eddy-current in-service inspection (ISI) methods for steam generator tubing has emphasized the effects of denting. Denting is a circumferential deformation of the tube in the support region as a result of the formation of a magnetite, Fe3O4, corrosion product on the carbon steel tube support plate in the crevice between the support plate and the tube wall. The effects of denting on eddy current inspection are twofold: (1) The detection and measurement of defects in the dented region is hampered by the distortion of the eddy-current response signals caused by the dents and (2) large dents may prevent the passage of high fill factor probes forcing the inspection teams to use a smaller probe in undented regions. Unless appropriate measures are taken, less reliable detection of defects and estimation of their depth can result. The report presents an experimental evaluation of existing eddy-current ISI methods when used to inspect dented regions. Tubes were mechanically dented to simulate various degrees of service induced denting. These tubes were then inserted in carbon steel tube support plates and the crevice region between the support plate and tube was subsequently packed with powdered magnetite. Diametral dent sizes considered during this program varied between 1 and 10 mils. Eddy-current signal patterns and strip chart recordings were obtained using a variety of test parameters, such as frequency, phase rotation and coil configuration, on tube samples containing various degrees of denting and with several types of defects in the dented system.

Book excerpt: The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is working on a number of steam generator and eddy-current problems, and one of the most promising developments is the use of reflection type probes. This probe consists of a driver coil encircling and coaxial with two pick-up coils, which are connected in opposition. The reflection probe is mounted perpendicular to the tube axis with one pick-up coil pressed against the surface like a pancake coil. Studies were performed to determine the best probe dimensions to maximize the ratio of defect signals to the undesired od property variations at different frequencies. Comparisons between reflection probes and the traditional circumferential or bobbin probes show that the former are more sensitive to defects and less sensitive to variation of properties outside the tube, such as tube supports, magnetite, and copper. The probe can be used in either multiple frequency or pulsed instruments in a manner similar to the bobbin probes. Since the undesired property variations have a smaller effect on the signal, they are easier to eliminate using multiple frequency or pulsed techniques. This has been demonstrated by test runs on standard steam generator tubes with different types of defects and different property variations. The reflection probe has given measurements of actual IGSCC cracks that compare well to the metallographic results. This type of probe has very good resolution and gives fine and accurate scans of the tubing, but is more expensive, complex, and slower. 10 figs., 2 tabs.

Multifrequency eddy-currents offer benefits in the performance of parallel tests and a readily available data base for the identification of nonunique signals. Multiparameter methods allow for the minimization of extraneous test variables, that is, support plates and small dents, for the more reliable detection and characterization of tube degradation. The suppression of the extraneous variable in real time offers advantages over off-line computer/digital subtraction approaches. Experience with the system based on the in-service inspection of three steam generators is considered.
