Book Synopsis Pursuit of Unity by : Michael Perman
Download or read book Pursuit of Unity written by Michael Perman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Unity, Michael Perman presents a comprehensive analysis of the South's political history. In the 1800s, the region endured almost continuous political crisis--nullification, secession, Reconstruction, the Populist revolt, and disfranchisement. For most of the twentieth century, the region was dominated by a one-party system, the "Solid South," that ensured both political unity internally and political influence in Washington. But in both centuries, the South suffered from the noncompetitive, one-party politics that differentiated it from the rest of the country. Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Perman argues, the South's political distinctiveness has come to an end, as has its pursuit of unity.

Book Synopsis Searching for Spiritual Unity . . . Can There Be Common Ground? by : Robyn E. Lebron
Download or read book Searching for Spiritual Unity . . . Can There Be Common Ground? written by Robyn E. Lebron and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for Spirituality is an introductory course on forty of the world’s most practiced or most misunderstood religions. Originally born out of author Robyn Lebron’s efforts to create a Christian education course for her husband’s congregation, this easy-to-follow reference guide to international religious beliefs is designed to reduce the fear and skepticism that often comes when we encounter belief systems different than our own, with the ultimate goal of promoting peace and spiritual unity throughout the world. Covering a broad array of different faiths, from mainstream Christian denominations to Buddhism to Islam, Searching for Spiritual Unity breaks down each religion into eleven categories to allow for easy comparative discussions: history, doctrine, God or gods, the role of Jesus Christ, worship practices, infant baptism or blessing, confirmation or initiation, marriage, death and afterlife, judgment, and any special doctrines. Also included are pages for taking notes and comparison charts that can be used as a quick “at a glance” reference. Did you know that ... • pagan beliefs almost line up perfectly with Christian concepts? • voodoo dolls are not commonly used by those who practice Voodoo? • Muslims believe in Jesus Christ’s mission? • the fastest growing religion today is also one of the youngest? Take the challenge to educate yourself, and replace skepticism and fear with peace and understanding.

Book Synopsis In Search of Authority by : Paul Avis
Download or read book In Search of Authority written by Paul Avis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglican theology has been a hotbed of debate about the issue of authority since the Reformation. What do we really appeal to when attempting to decide matters of doctrine, worship, ministry or ethics? The debate is very much alive today, between Evangelical, Liberal and Catholic Anglicans around the world. This proposed book focuses on the understanding of authority in Anglican theology. It looks at the way that Anglican theologians, in the past and today, have developed their theories of authority in relation to burning issues. Avis critiques them in a continuous dialogue or running commentary and set them in an ecumenical context, comparing Anglican positions with Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant ones. In each area - Bible, tradition, reason, experience -he sets out a new understanding of authority in a constructive and persuasive way, moving to a series of overall conclusions and recommendations. The sharp critiques of various positions will help to make it the subject of discussion and debate.

Book excerpt: To repeat, as it has been repeated many times before, Christian unity is possible only when all those who call themselves Christian embrace common doctrine bearing common definitions. Thus far, there has been only one church that has not changed its beliefsthe Eastern Orthodox Church. She should be the apex of unity. That is not the direction in which the ecumenical movement is moving; therefore, unaware of its ecclesial need, the ecumenical movement has lost its horizon. Father Michael
