The search for the essence of strategy is a challenging task. Determining which are the most important aspects, or the quintessence, of a strategy requires extracting and concentrating its substance. For this task we need two basic elements: firstly, an historical perspective on the evolution of the strategy; and secondly, a practical proposal for managing strategy. This means reviewing those models that have remained credible after practical tests; and then proposing an approach for managing strategy. We must recover the essence of strategy and project it into the future.Organisations can learn. The strategic management process can be seen by an organisation as a source of constant learning. This comprehensive strategic process goes through three stages and resembles a wheel. In the centre is the raison d'être of the organisation: its mission, vision, and values. The three stages of the comprehensive strategic process are: analysis, decision, and implementation. These stages are interrelated and form a strategic continuum; however, complex processes do not always require complex models. It helps an organisation if the rules and models are easily understood by everyone. Simplicity is often the greatest sophistication.

Strategic decisions are important for five main reasons: They are large-scale, risky and hard to reverse; they are a bridge between deliberate and emerging strategies; they can be a major source of organizational learning; they play an important part in the development of individual managers and they cut accross functions and academic disciplines. Strategic Decisions summarizes the current state of the art in research on strategic decision-making, with chapters prepared by leading strategy researchers. The editors also present implications for current application and proposed directions for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book clarifies confusions of strategy that have existed for nearly 40 years through the core thoughts of three fundamental elements. Unlike the traditional definition of strategy as "a plan to achieve a long-term goal from overall considerations”in a linear view, this book defines strategy from non-linear viewpoint as it is in the real world. The art of a strategy lies not only in the determination of development goals, but also in the identification of development problems and putting forward overall guiding ideology of solving problems. Rich illustrations as well as numerous business and military cases are presented in helping readers to understand the fundamental elements of strategy. The general scope of the book includes introductions to the three fundamental elements of strategy, three-sub decisions of a complete strategic decision, incomplete strategies, relationship between tactic and strategy, three elements of competitive and corporative strategies. There may be biases in company-level, real strategic decision-making which makes a complete strategy not necessarily a perfect one. The book introduces biases and reasons for the biases, helping industrial strategic decision-makers understand the importance of knowing the nature of the company, the industry and its environment. In addition, this book also presents principles and evaluation approaches of strategic decisions, explores the reasons for the excessive definitions of the strategy concept, and discusses directions of future’s research tasks. The book will benefit business managers who are interested in knowing what a complete strategic decision is and how to avoid errors or biases in strategic decision-making. It also benefits students in business schools (especially in MBA/EMBA programs) who are (or will be) on executive positions. Academic researchers may find it is interesting to understand strategy from the view of the three elements. The new view provides a novel insight into strategy and promotes several research directions in the future. The three elements of strategy are also applicable to military strategies and readers who are interested in military and may find its value as well.

The model which introduces this volume sets the stage for addressing the major phases of the strategic management process: environmental analysis, strategy formulation and development, strategy evaluation and control. Its conceptual and operational structure is described in the first part, together with a practically oriented definition of strategy, and a brief discussion of the logic and benefits of the judgmental modeling approach to decision making. The second part critically addresses the classical approaches to the analysis of the external and internal environmental factors, which have an impact on the “functioning” of the basic model, i.e. the structural characteristics of the industry context, and the companies’ technical, organizational, financial, and human resources, including the translation into operational models of otherwise rather theoretical concepts.

Book excerpt: Many theoretical as well as practical books on management theory analyze a range of subjects from strategic management to business strategy, competitive strategy, marketing management, strategic marketing, one-to-one marketing, consumer behaviorism, growth strategy, functional strategy, and technology management. In addition, there are also many how-to books on strategy formulation. But not many books on the topic are written with a step-by-step guide on making practical strategic management decisions. The author presents 15 steps that combine strategy and marketing aspects in business. The steps are presented systematically and holistically. Readers will be able to maintain the “big picture” perspective, while being able to dive deep into each step. The guide is not written for “ideal situations” in business. Much attention is given to being aware of market trends, business competition, and the limitations of resources, to be able to apply practical strategic thinking in business.
