Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When readers relate to the emotions and incidents expressed in a poem as their own, the personal experience of a poet becomes universal expression of human feelings, happiness and suffering. The poems in the book 'In Search of Magnificence' are the outcome of such creation. According to Dr. Adyasha Das, a distinguished poet on her own right, "In Search of Magnificence is a unique concoction of scientific dilemmas, social sensibilities and the wanderings of the psyche. Most poems deal with contemporary issues and refrain from becoming sentimental avalanche. There is an astounding sensitivity in unravelling the magnificence in mundane and uniquenes in ordinary in the entire collection of poems. The common themes of the poems often belie the existential shades. A must-read! Here are some comments from few other distinguished readers of the first edition of this collection of poems. "Dr. Samal is a poet with a difference. His poems are a brilliant interplay of words, thoughts, images, symbols, science and culture. From surrealist conflict to tender sensuality, his unpretentious style of writing truly makes this collection a cruise from the mundane to magnificence." Dr. Pratibha Ray, Jnanapitha Awardee, India, 2011 "Babru Samal is a scientist working with the function of genes that prospect into God's most secluded private chamber of creation. He must have peeped into that chamber through a secret pinhole, wittingly or unwittingly that had jolted up the modern day scientist in him to a post modern poet, relevant to the twenty first century. The amazing sensibility behind the vision of this scientist that works like a touch stone capable of turning dross into gold, ordinary to extraordinary and prosaic into poetic is the magic of the creation: 'In Search of magnificence." Dr. Santanu Acharya, a scientist and an established novelist. "The poems in the 'In Search of Magnificence' are deep, broad in scope and very imaginative. The poet has skil

Book Synopsis Search and Rescue by : Michael Chitwood
Download or read book Search and Rescue written by Michael Chitwood and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search and Rescue, Michael Chitwood seeks what the pagan Celts called the thin places, the spots where otherworldliness bleeds into the everyday. Beginning with childhood, the poet meditates on the intersection of the sacred and secular, on those luminous moments we can only partially understand. Water anchors the collection with the title poem, which explores the history of a large manmade lake and how it changes the surrounding mountain community. Displaying keen narrative skills and an engaging voice, the poems in Search and Rescue pay homage to Whitman and Dickinson, to Heaney and Wright, in pursuit of the everyday grace of Appalachian culture and the natural landscape.
Download or read book Life on Mars written by Tracy K. Smith and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize * Poet Laureate of the United States * * A New York Times Notable Book of 2011 and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice * * A New Yorker, Library Journal and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year * New poetry by the award-winning poet Tracy K. Smith, whose "lyric brilliance and political impulses never falter" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) You lie there kicking like a baby, waiting for God himself To lift you past the rungs of your crib. What Would your life say if it could talk? —from "No Fly Zone" With allusions to David Bowie and interplanetary travel, Life on Mars imagines a soundtrack for the universe to accompany the discoveries, failures, and oddities of human existence. In these brilliant new poems, Tracy K. Smith envisions a sci-fi future sucked clean of any real dangers, contemplates the dark matter that keeps people both close and distant, and revisits the kitschy concepts like "love" and "illness" now relegated to the Museum of Obsolescence. These poems reveal the realities of life lived here, on the ground, where a daughter is imprisoned in the basement by her own father, where celebrities and pop stars walk among us, and where the poet herself loses her father, one of the engineers who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. With this remarkable third collection, Smith establishes herself among the best poets of her generation.

Some are joyful. Some are sad. Some are funny and lighthearted. Many offer layers of meaning that reveal themselves only after the poem has been studied so closely as to be learned by heart. In issuing the challenge to memorize great poetry, Caroline Kennedy invites us to a deeply enriching experience. For as she reminds us, “If we learn poems by heart, not only do we have their wisdom to draw on, we also gain confidence, knowledge and understanding that no one can take away.” Illustrated with gorgeous, original watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Jon J Muth , this is truly a book for all ages, and one that families will share again and again. Caroline’s thoughtful introductions shed light on the many ways we can appreciate poetry, and the special tradition of memorizing and reciting poetry that she celebrates within her own family.

Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE 2020 NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR POETRY FINALIST FOR THE 2021 NAACP IMAGE AWARD FOR POETRY Danez Smith is our president Homie is Danez Smith’s magnificent anthem about the saving grace of friendship. Rooted in the loss of one of Smith’s close friends, this book comes out of the search for joy and intimacy within a nation where both can seem scarce and getting scarcer. In poems of rare power and generosity, Smith acknowledges that in a country overrun by violence, xenophobia, and disparity, and in a body defined by race, queerness, and diagnosis, it can be hard to survive, even harder to remember reasons for living. But then the phone lights up, or a shout comes up to the window, and family—blood and chosen—arrives with just the right food and some redemption. Part friendship diary, part bright elegy, part war cry, Homie is the exuberant new book written for Danez and for Danez’s friends and for you and for yours.

Download or read book The Poem Is You written by Stephanie Burt and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary American poetry has plenty to offer new readers, and plenty more for those who already follow it. Yet its difficulty—and sheer variety—leaves many readers puzzled or overwhelmed. The critic, scholar, and poet Stephanie Burt sets out to help. Beginning in the early 1980s, where critical consensus ends, Burt canvasses American poetry of the past four decades, from the headline-making urgency of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen to the stark pathos of Louise Glück, the limitless energy of Juan Felipe Herrera, and the erotic provocations of D. A. Powell. The Poem Is You: Sixty Contemporary American Poems and How to Read Them is a guide to the diverse magnificences of American poetry today. It presents a wide range of poems selected by Burt for this volume, each accompanied by an original essay explaining how a given poem works, why it matters, and how the poem speaks to other parts of art and culture. Included here are some classroom classics (by Ashbery, Komunyakaa, Hass), less famous poems by very famous poets (Glück, Kay Ryan), and poems by prizewinning poets near the start of their careers (such as Brandon Som), and by others who are not—or not yet—well known. The Poem Is You will appeal to poets, teachers, and students, but it is intended especially for readers who want to learn more about contemporary American poetry but who have not known where or how to start. It describes what American poets have fashioned for one another, and what they can give us today.

Book Synopsis In Search of the Classic by : Steven Shankman
Download or read book In Search of the Classic written by Steven Shankman and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1994-09-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The &"classical,&" Steven Shankman argues, should not be confused with a particular historical period of Western antiquity, although it may owe its original articulation to the literary and philosophical explorations of ancient Greek authors. Shankman's book searches for and attempts to formulate the shape of the continuing presence&—as embodied in particular literary works mainly from Western antiquity and the neoclassical and modern periods&—of what the author calls a &"classical&" understanding of literature. For Shankman, literature, defined from a classical perspective, is a coherent, compelling, and rationally defensible representation that resists being reduced either to the mere recording of material reality or to the bare exemplification of an abstract philosophical precept. He derives his definition largely from his reading of Greek literature from Homer through Plato, from the history of literary criticism, and from the Greco-Roman tradition in English, American, and French literature. Shankman reveals unsuspected yet convincing connections among authors of such widely disparate times and places. His idea of the &"classic&" that authorizes these connections is presented as normative, thus making possible the evaluation of literary works and, in turn, forthright discussion of what constitutes the &"literary&" as distinct from other kinds of discourse. Shankman's study runs counter to a strong tendency of contemporary criticism that argues precisely against any distinct category of the &"literary.&" He offers a series of interpretations that cumulatively advance theoretical discussion by challenging scholars to rethink the critical paradigms of postmodernism. At the center of the book is a discussion of the quintessentially classic Val&éry poem Le Cimeti&ère marin and the classic qualities it shares with Pindar's third Pythian ode, from which Val&éry derives the epigraph for his poem.
