He lives in rural America during the later years of the Great Depression and must struggle on crutches, for he was born crippled. When he finds a baby sparrow that has fallen from its nest and died, he feels sorry for the tiny helpless bird, but no one else seems to care. Later, events in his life cause him to feel worthless and helpless, like the little bird. His grandmother tells him that God cares about him and the little bird, and even said; He sees the sparrow fall. But Jeremy asks, Ifn He saw it fall Grammaw, how come He let it die? And how come I was born crippled? She tells him about heaven, its golden streets, and that he is more precious than gold. She also tells him, in heaven everything will be beautiful and that he wont be crippled. Thinking God might change the little bird into a golden one, Cause they aint too purty down here, he asks God to send him a golden sparrow. That way, hell know God hears him, loves him, and that he wont be crippled in heaven. During his search for a golden sparrow, his faith touches many, from an old man Hermit Bill, to Scotty Simmons (a kid who makes fun of him). The story was written, because during a difficult time in my life, I had asked God to give me something to write about that will touch peoples hearts. A week later, I happen to see a white sparrow with gold wing patches. Then after I had already begun the book, I found with the white one, a real golden sparrow!

Book excerpt: The Golden Sparrow- A NovelThis story is an exquisite rendition of the culture, spirituality and politics of an ancient land–India–once known as The Golden Sparrow.During the British rule in India, Surinder Mehra, a professor of English literature and his wife, Kamla, live in Lahore with their two sons.In 1947, the British decide to partition India into two countries–India and Pakistan. Pakistan is formed as an Islamic country and India as a secular country. Due to the centuries old religious and social tensions between Hindus and Muslims, riots breakout between the two communities resulting in the massacre of hundreds of thousands of people. About 10 million people on both sides change countries as refugees. After facing some terrifying nights during the riots, the Mehra family, being Hindus, moves to India as refugees and settles down in Delhi in makeshift quarters. With faith in God, they rise from the ashes of the partition of the country. They adopt a baby girl, Suneeta–one of many left orphaned as a result of the riots. Two years later, a Muslim couple shows up and claims her as their daughter; the Mehras are emotionally devastated. What follows is the conquest of human spirit over fear and despair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humble House Sparrow, common everywhere, was surprisingly poorly researched and Summers-Smith's work soon provided interesting insights into this successful and adaptable little bird. Denis Summers-Smith first took up the study of the House Sparrow in 1947, thinking that the difficulties of travel in post-war Britain would best suit the study of a species always close at hand. As new opportunities to travel opened up, his interest blossomed to take in the genus Passer as a whole. His travels would ultimately lead to his study of all but one group, found only in the deepest Turkestan, and to the publication of his authoritative monograph on sparrows in 1988. While that book presented his knowledge of sparrow biology, this volume tells the other, human, side of the tale. His wry descriptions of the tribulations and unexpected pleasures of a traveller on four continents, from the Himalayas and Thailand, to Africa and the Americas (with a good few islands in between) are interspersed with observations and speculations on the biology of sparrows in a wide variety of habitats. Everywhere local officials and birdwatchers warmed to the eccentric Scot in pursuit of the little birds that nobody notices but which so often make their homes beside us. The author's own photographs and delightful cartoons by Euan Dunn further paint the picture of this lifelong search.

Some of the poems are humorous; some reflect the author s faith, and some are sentimental, which he hopes will cause you to remember the special times in your life. Others touch the heart; hopefully in a deep and profound way. Most of the poems are written in a down-to-earth manner that one can understand, yet the words convey the feelings of the author. That is why it is called: Poems from the Heart. Ken has also placed photos with some of his favorite poems. This is the author s seventh book, eight if you count an earlier version of one he has just finished. It was called, In Search of the Golden Sparrow, which was published in 2003. A few of the poems in Poems from the Heart have been published in some of his other works. Some of his other books published in 2011 are: Life on Pigeon Creek, In Search of a Golden Sparrow, Invasion of the Dregs, Barnestorming the Outdoors, and A Children s Story Collection. One other book, he has published under his pen name, which is a guarded secret. "

This book gives a rare glimpse into rural life during the fifties and into early 1961. At the end of the book it has Looking Back, which gives insight into some of the people and events that took place or would later take place where the story happened. It also gives a view into the lives of some remarkable people, from Yankeetowns Tarzan to The Cat Lady to other local and even national celebrities. It mentions Fess Parker, Madonna, Rosie ODonald, Chuck Conners, Burt Landcaster, Walter Matthau, Florence Henderson, Geena Davis and Tom Hanks. But the main story is about a little boy and his hopes and dreams while growing up along the same creek that Abraham Lincoln once lived on. The book tells of the hard yet fun times a little boy goes through. It tells of his secret love, his quest to find something rare and beautiful, and his desire to be unique like some of those around him. So step back to a simpler time and see the world through the eyes of a child.

One story, The Cowfly, was written after the authors son, Elijah, came up with the idea. Elijah was ten years old at the time and even did most of the artwork for his story. It is also included.

The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end. The Sparrow is one of them.”—Entertainment Weekly “Powerful . . . The Sparrow tackles a difficult subject with grace and intelligence.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Provocative, challenging . . . recalls both Arthur C. Clarke and H. G. Wells, with a dash of Ray Bradbury for good measure.”—The Dallas Morning News “[Mary Doria] Russell shows herself to be a skillful storyteller who subtly and expertly builds suspense.”—USA Today

This is an essential guide to identifying 76 kinds, along with a fascinating history of human interactions with them. What, exactly, is a sparrow? All birders (and many non-birders) have essentially the same mental image of a pelican, a duck, or a flamingo, and a guide dedicated to waxwings or kingfishers would need nothing more than a sketch and a single sentence to satisfactorily identify its subject. Sparrows are harder to pin down. This book covers one family (Passerellidae), which includes towhees and juncos, and 76 members of the sparrow clan. Birds have a human history, too, beginning with their significance to native cultures and continuing through their discovery by science, their taxonomic fortunes and misfortunes, and their prospects for survival in a world with ever less space for wild creatures. This book includes not just facts and measurements, but stories--of how birds got their names and how they were discovered--of their entanglement with human history.
