Download or read book 34 Days written by Amos Harel and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive account of the progression of the Second Lebanese War, from the border abduction of an Israeli soldier on the morning of July 12, 2006, through the hasty decision for an aggressive response; the fateful discussions in the Cabinet and the senior Israeli command; to the heavy fighting in south Lebanon and the raging diplomatic battles in Paris, Washington and New York. The book answers the following questions: has Israel learned the right lessons from this failed military confrontation? What can Western countries learn from the IDF's failure against a fundamentalist Islamic terror organization? And what role did Iran and Syria play in this affair? 34 Days delivers the first blow-by-blow account of the Lebanon war and new insights for the future of the region and its effects on the West.

Book Synopsis (Re)constructing Armenia in Lebanon and Syria by : Nicola Migliorino
Download or read book (Re)constructing Armenia in Lebanon and Syria written by Nicola Migliorino and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost nine decades, since their mass-resettlement to the Levant in the wake of the Genocide and First World War, the Armenian communities of Lebanon and Syria appear to have successfully maintained a distinct identity as an ethno-culturally diverse group, in spite of representing a small non-Arab and Christian minority within a very different, mostly Arab and Muslim environment. The author shows that, while in Lebanon the state has facilitated the development of an extensive and effective system of Armenian ethno-cultural preservation, in Syria the emergence of centralizing, authoritarian regimes in the 1950s and 1960s has severely damaged the autonomy and cultural diversity of the Armenian community. Since 1970, the coming to power of the Asad family has contributed to a partial recovery of Armenian ethno-cultural diversity, as the community seems to have developed some form of tacit arrangement with the regime. In Lebanon, on the other hand, the Armenian community suffered the consequences of the recurrent breakdown of the consociational arrangement that regulates public life. In both cases the survival of Armenian cultural distinctiveness seems to be connected, rather incidentally, with the continuing 'search for legitimacy' of the state.

Download or read book On Photography in Lebanon written by Clémence Cottard Hachem and published by Kaph Books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are transitioning towards a new and different culture, a digital one in which the medium of photography becomes dangerously diluted in an image world produced moment by moment and consumed at a rapid pace. Photographic images and their reception inevitably converge with the symbolic, cultural, social, and political implications of the act of looking. Here, 40 contributors share their perspectives on photography in Lebanon, evoking its numerous forms of existence. Examining techniques, practices, uses, objects, images, histories, and artistic approaches, the book presents a fascinating collection of 380 photographs produced between the end of the 19th century and today.
Book Synopsis Politics and War in Lebanon by : Mordechai Nisan
Download or read book Politics and War in Lebanon written by Mordechai Nisan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lebanon is an exceptionally misunderstood country; its religious politics are typically misrepresented and denigrated in Western political commentary. Politics and War in Lebanon offers a lucid examination of Lebanese society and politics. Mordechai Nisan examines Lebanon in its own termson its own cultural turf. He then points to the causes of political disintegration in 1975 and explores the capacity of Lebanon to recover and retain its unique national poise.Avoiding disorienting Western stereotypes, Nisan presents Lebanon in its own native frame of reference, as a multi-ethnic country that operates according to its immutable and enigmatic political forms. Lebanon is different from other Arab countries, as demonstrated through its very complex electoral system, its tradition of cross-elite cooperation, and its special sense of Lebanese national identity that differentiates it from its overbearing Syrian neighbor.Nisan explores intra-Maronite Christian feuds, identifies Syria's occupation strategy, analyzes the violence of the Palestinians, and studies Israel's failed policy strategy and the role of Hezbollah in the Lebanese power equation. Lebanon is caught between its special historical identity as a country ofpoise, creativity, and liberty and the interminable warfare in the streets and villages of the country. Although its future appears dim, its resilience enabled it to prevail in the past, and may yet continue to do so.
Book Synopsis Israel's Covert Diplomacy in Lebanon by : Kirsten E. Schulze
Download or read book Israel's Covert Diplomacy in Lebanon written by Kirsten E. Schulze and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the relations of the Jewish Agency and the State of Israel with the Lebanese Maronites in the period 1920-1984. It is essentially a study of the evolution of Israeli policy towards and the minority alliance with the Maronites. The central argument of the book is that Israel has pursued an active policy of intervention in the domestic politics of Lebanon through the alliance, and thus the book challenges the view of Israel as 'a nation that dwells alone'.

Book Synopsis War and Intervention in Lebanon (Routledge Revivals) by : Yair Evron
Download or read book War and Intervention in Lebanon (Routledge Revivals) written by Yair Evron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the bitter conflict that divided Jerusalem and Damascus, a fascinating process of indirect – through the United States – and tacit understandings emerged with regard to Lebanon in the 1970s. This derived largely from the Israeli deterrence posture which held in check Syrian military involvement in Lebanon. This book, first published in 1987, traces the development of the Israeli and Syrian involvement in Lebanon between 1975 and 1985, and of the deterrence dialogue which evolved between them. It also places this dialogue within the larger context of the overall Israeli-Syrian deterrence equation. War and Intervention in Lebanon is a fascinating and relevant work, of great value to those with an interest in International Relations and Middle Eastern history, politics and diplomacy.

Book Synopsis A History of Stability and Change in Lebanon by : Joseph Bayeh
Download or read book A History of Stability and Change in Lebanon written by Joseph Bayeh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lebanon is a country whose domestic politics have, even more than others in the region, been at the mercy of changes on the international stage. Having been under Ottoman and French rule in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the post-World War II era has seen Lebanon subjected to Israeli, Syrian and American interventions which have all threatened the county s stability as a state. Joseph Bayeh argues that it is this international dimension which holds the key to an in-depth understanding of the country. In support of this argument, Bayeh examines Lebanese history from its early days under the Ottomans to the present day in order to show how international shifts and conflicts have had their impact on Lebanon. With changes such as the fall of the Ottoman empire, the rise of US power after World War II, the end of the Cold War and the new focus on the region in the aftermath of 9/11, Lebanon has at various junctures been bolstered or undermined. Bayeh tracks all of this, offering insights into the workings of Lebanon s domestic politics which will appeal to researchers of the international relations of the Middle East and Lebanon s political history."
