In 1942 Fr Arrupe became Rector at the Jesuit house at Hiroshima and he was able to use his earlier medical training when the atom bomb fell on the city in August 1945. He was elected twenty-eighth General of the Society of Jesus in May 1965 and was the first Basque since St Ignatius Loyola to hold that ofice.
Download or read book Christus Victor written by Gustaf Aulen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Download or read book Hope written by Roy Anthony MBA and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope: Where Can We Find It? This book has laid down a number of hopeful stories with references from the Bible to some contemporaries of our times. Notwithstanding the trials, temptations, or pain we may go through, we can always hold onto the hope God has extended to us. Believers in Christ and nonbelievers, don't allow your yesterday to steal your today. Your past cannot dictate your today and future. That is what we call hope. Hope backed by faith makes us certain of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot envision. So where can we find hope? The answer is clear and simple. We can only find hope in Jesus Christ. Jesus did not come only to bring us salvation, but he's our only hope too. We have hope because Jesus has forgiven us our sins and has further converted all of us into his icon as children of the father. Jesus is hope. He finds us rest when there's no hope. "Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my Hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge" (Psalms 62:5-7). Have you ever bothered to read into the promises of God to mankind? Hope is found in all the promises God has given his children. You cannot find Hope anywhere, except in Jesus Christ alone. His promises are yes and amen, and he does not take his words back nor change his mind. "God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" (Numbers 23:19) Hope is found in the promises God has given us, so why do you doubt the promises of God? We doubt it because his timing is not ours. The Scripture says in James 1:6, "If we doubt while we ask, we will not receive anything from Him, because we are unsteady. He who doubts is like a wave of the sea blown and tossed by the wind." As salvation is found in no one else but in Christ, so is hope. It's found in no other but in Christ Jesus. Keep your hope alive in Jesus, not in man.

Book Synopsis Walking Through Fire by : Vaneetha Rendall Risner
Download or read book Walking Through Fire written by Vaneetha Rendall Risner and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing, Job-like story of how an existence filled with loss, suffering, questioning, and anger became a life filled with shocking and incomprehensible peace and joy. Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful."

Download or read book The Pleasures of God written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia
