Book excerpt: In February 1992, I defended my doctoral thesis: Engineering Optimiza tion - selected contributions (IMSOR, The Technical University of Den mark, 1992, p. 92). This dissertation presents retrospectively my central contributions to the theoretical and applied aspects of optimization. When I had finished my thesis I became interested in editing a volume related to a new expanding area of applied optimization. I considered several approaches: simulated annealing, tabu search, genetic algorithms, neural networks, heuristics, expert systems, generalized multipliers, etc. Finally, I decided to edit a volume related to simulated annealing. My main three reasons for this choice were the following: (i) During the last four years my colleagues at IMSOR and I have car ried out several applied projects where simulated annealing was an essential. element in the problem-solving process. Most of the avail able reports and papers have been written in Danish. After a short review I was convinced that most of these works deserved to be pub lished for a wider audience. (ii) After the first reported applications of simulated annealing (1983- 1985), a tremendous amount of theoretical and applied work have been published within many different disciplines. Thus, I believe that simulated annealing is an approach that deserves to be in the curricula of, e.g. Engineering, Physics, Operations Research, Math ematical Programming, Economics, System Sciences, etc. (iii) A contact to an international network of well-known researchers showed that several individuals were willing to contribute to such a volume.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on metaheuristic methods and its applications to real-world problems in Engineering. The first part describes some key metaheuristic methods, such as Bat Algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimization, Differential Evolution, and Particle Collision Algorithms. Improved versions of these methods and strategies for parameter tuning are also presented, both of which are essential for the practical use of these important computational tools. The second part then applies metaheuristics to problems, mainly in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Nuclear Engineering. Other methods, such as the Flower Pollination Algorithm, Symbiotic Organisms Search, Cross-Entropy Algorithm, Artificial Bee Colonies, Population-Based Incremental Learning, Cuckoo Search, and Genetic Algorithms, are also presented. The book is rounded out by recently developed strategies, or hybrid improved versions of existing methods, such as the Lightning Optimization Algorithm, Differential Evolution with Particle Collisions, and Ant Colony Optimization with Dispersion – state-of-the-art approaches for the application of computational intelligence to engineering problems. The wide variety of methods and applications, as well as the original results to problems of practical engineering interest, represent the primary differentiation and distinctive quality of this book. Furthermore, it gathers contributions by authors from four countries – some of which are the original proponents of the methods presented – and 18 research centers around the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the development of an optimization engine applicable to light water reactor (LWR) fuel assembly loading design. The optimization technique employed is the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, while the evaluation of design objectives and constraints is handled by coupling to the lattice-physics code CPM-2. The optimization control variables include the "pin-by-pin" placement and/or loading of nuclear fuel, burnable absorbers, or other material regions within a fuel assembly (e.g. water holes, guide tubes, etc.). Also, the designer can "freeze" any given region during the optimization, both in terms of location and/or composition. The objective functions presently available include the minimization of 235U enrichment or the minimization of pin power peaking, both of which can act as constraints to one another (via penalty-based or hard constraints).

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commercial nuclear power plant with a boiling water reactor will utilize between 368 and 800+ individual fuel assemblies to generate steam for 18 to 24 months between refueling outages. The composition and reactivity of each fuel assembly will vary due to variations in initial enrichment, burnable poison loading and irradiation conditions in the core. These variations pose a challenge to the engineers who must design subsequent reloads because only one quarter to one half of the fuel will be replaced at a time. One of the challenges is to determine the optimum layout of the fuel within the core in order to get the highest value from the fuel without violating any safety or operational limits. The FORMOSA-B program was developed to automatically find a family of optimum loading patterns by combining a robust, accurate 3-D core simulator with a simulated annealing loading pattern search. Other features have been added to allow the program to rapidly compute shutdown margins and optimize control rod programming through the application of heuristic rules. One drawback of the FORMOSA-B program is that long run-times, sometimes exceeding a week, are required to generate and evaluate the large numbers of solutions required by the simulated annealing algorithm. The rising popularity and availability of parallel computing and computational clusters provides a possible solution to the problem of long run-times. To this end, a parallel simulated annealing capability has been developed for the FORMOSA-B program. The parallel simulated annealing driver utilizes standardized Message Passing Interface routines to divide the individual Markov search chains of the simulated annealing algorithm among a large number of processors. By evaluating multiple loading patterns concurrently, run times are significantly reduced. In testing with a 368-assembly BWR/4 model, parallel speedup factors exceeding 32 were observed with 48 processors. Parallel efficiencies are calculated to be in the.

Book excerpt: Over the past sixty years, a wide variety of nuclear power technologies have been theorized, investigated and tested to various degrees. These technologies, if properly applied, could provide a stable, long-term, economical source of CO2-free electric power. However, the recycling of nuclear fuel introduces a degree of coupling between reactor systems which must be accounted for when making long term strategic plans. This work investigates the use of a simulated annealing optimization algorithm coupled together with the VISION fuel cycle simulation model in order to identify attractive strategies from economic, evironmental, non-proliferation and waste-disposal perspectives, which each have associated an objective function. The simulated annealing optimization algorithm works by perturbing the fraction of new reactor capacity allocated to each available reactor type (using a set of heuristic rules) then evaluating the resulting deployment scenario outcomes using the VISION model and the chosen objective functions. These new scenarios, which are either accepted or rejected according the the Metropolis Criterion, are then used as the basis for further perturbations. By repeating this process several thousand times, a family of near-optimal solutions are obtained. Preliminary results from this work using a two-step, Once-through LWR to Full-recycle/FRburner deployment scenario with exponentially increasing electric demand indicate that the algorithm is capable of nding reactor deployment pro les that reduce the long-term-heat waste disposal burden relative to an initial reference scenario. Further work is under way to re ne the current results and to extend them to include the other objective functions and to examine the optimization trade-o s that exist between these di erent objectives.

This work utilizes one such developed technique of optimization called simulated annealing to produce optimal operation parameters for a 15x15 fuel assembly to be used in an operating nuclear power reactor. The two main cases of optimization are: one that finds the optimal 235U enrichment layout of the fuel pins in the assembly and another that finds both the optimal 235U enrichments where gadolinium burnable absorber pins are also inserted. Both of these optimizations can be performed by coupling Adaptive Simulated Annealing to TransLAT which successfully searches the optimization space for a fuel assembly layout that produces the minimized pin power peaking factor. Within given time constraints this package produces optimal layouts within a given set of assumptions and constraints. Each layout is forced to maintain the fuel assembly average 235U enrichment as a constraint. Reductions in peaking factors that are produced through this method are on the order of 2% to 3% when compared to the baseline results. As with any simulated annealing approach, families of optimal layouts are produced that can be used at the engineer0́9s discretion.
