Book excerpt: Experience the exclusive, behind-the-scenes story of one of the biggest bands of the nineties In 1985, Mark Bryan heard Darius Rucker singing in a dorm shower at the University of South Carolina and asked him to form a band. For the next eight years, Hootie & the Blowfish—completed by bassist Dean Felber and drummer Soni Sonefeld—played every frat house, roadhouse, and rock club in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, becoming one of the biggest independent acts in the region. Thirty years after the band's major label debut, cracked rear view, author Tim Sommer pulls back the curtain on the band that defied record-industry odds to break into the mainstream by playing hacky sack music in the age of grunge. Only Wanna Be with You includes extensive new interviews with the band members and some of their most famous fans, as well as stories from the recording studio, tour bus, and golf course. Only Wanna Be with You is essential reading for Hootie lovers and music buffs.

Book excerpt: The Pit of Despair is a raw and riveting account of one woman's triumphant journey from the abyss of addiction through the hope-filled world of recovery. Lisa Jo B. intimately guides the audience through her struggles with sex, cocaine, and food addiction, her near-fatal relapse, and her ultimate redemption through a conscious connection with God via a 12-step program. Beautiful, heartfelt prayers punctuate each chapter, designed for individual or group recitation, offering an interactive dimension to her story. Lisa Jo's vivid, emotional storytelling captures the devastating depths of addiction and the transformative joy of recovery, acting as a beacon of hope for those entangled in the thorny brambles of addiction. Her candid approach dismantles societal stigma around addiction, by reframing it as a disease rather than a moral failing, aiding in the release of those struggling with toxic shame. She further empowers her audience by teaching them how to craft powerful prayers, fostering a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Uniquely straddling the domains of addiction recovery and Christian faith, this compelling memoir offers a potent remedy for those seeking a solution to their addiction, 12-steppers, and all believers in Christ who seek to better understand this profound struggle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A longitudinal study of race relations in a major southern city, Macon Black and White examines the ways white and black Maconites interacted over the course of the entire twentieth century. Beginning in the 1890s, in what has been called the nadir of race relations in America, Andrew M. Manis traces the arduous journey toward racial equality in the heart of Central Georgia. The book describes how, despite incremental progress toward that goal, segregationist pressures sought to silence voices for change on both sides of the color line. Providing a snapshot of black-white relations for every decade of the twentieth century, this compellingly written story highlights the ways indigenous development in Macon combined with other statewide, regional, and national factors to shape the struggle for and against racial equality. Manis shows how both African-Americans and a cadre of white moderates, separately and at times together, gradually increased pressure for change in a conservative Georgia city. Showcasing how disfranchisement, lynching, interracial efforts toward the humanization of segregation, the world wars, and the Civil Rights Movement affected the pace of change, Manis describes the eventual rise of a black political class and the election of Macon's first African-American mayor. The book uses demographic realities as well as the perspectives of black and white Maconites to paint a portrait of contemporary black-white relations in the city. Manis concludes with suggestions on how the city might continue the struggle for racial justice and overcome the unutterable separation that still plagues Macon in the early years of a new century. Macon Black and White is a powerful storythat no one interested in racial change over time can afford to miss.
