Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life in Labrador In a book, sketch, or series of sketches, one of the last things to be written - and often one of the last to be printed - is the introduction. Why, then, it should be so invariably placed first is a question for the causalist. I shall vary the usual proceedings in such cases, and, writing my introduction last, shall both print and place it last. The subject of the present and last number of Bird Life in Labrador is very briefly stated. In 1875, the writer made a Summer excursion to Labrador, remaining there two months, traveling chiefly within a radius of sixty miles southwest and ten miles northeast of Bonne Esperance. In 1880, he visited the coast in September and remained until the following September, calling at nearly every harbor of importance from Mingan to Red Bay. In 1882, a third exploring party continued the work of the two previous trips, as far as Fox Harbor, St. Lewis Sound. Other trips to portions of these same grounds have been made, and much new material gained, but not beyond St. Lewis Sound, as above mentioned. When the sketches that have just appeared in the American Field were written, after returning from the trip in 1882, I had never seen any account whatever of the birds of this region, saving from occasional glimpses in odd volumes of the works of Audubon, and not all of these. I cannot, therefore, be charged with literary piracy, so often urged upon writers of any particular subject or region. To prove the above fact, I am prepared to take upon me the most solemn obligation that can be required of any author. I make this statement simply as a precautionary measure of self-protection. On the north side of the mouth there was a steep, yellow clay wall; and on the southern a flat, covered with poplars and willows. This river has its name from the Singular regular sandstone balls which are found in its banks, and in those of the Missouri in its vicinity. They are of various sizes, from that of a musket ball to that of a large bomb, and lie irregularly on the bank, or in the strata, from which they often project to half their thickness; when the river has washed away the earth they then fall down, and are found in great numbers on the bank. Many of them are rather elliptical, others are more flattened, others flat on one side and convex on the other. Of the perfectly rp/zeriml balls, I observed some two feet in diameter. A mile above the mouth of Cannon Ball River I saw no more of them. (travels in North America, p. 167, Maximilian, Prince of Wied.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Audubon the Naturalist: A History of His Life and Time The origin of the gifted ornithologist, animal painter, and writer, known to the world as J ohn J ames Audubon, has te mained a mystery up to the present time. In now lifting the veil which was cast over his early existence, I feel that I serve the cause of historical truth; at the same time it is possible to do fuller justice to all most intimately concerned with the story of his life and accomplishments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John James Audubon: The Naturalist Audubon lived in a period of our history which is fast receding from view, and of which the personal memoirs and portraitures are by no means abundant. He was a keen, sympathetic observer not merely of the birds and animals, but of men and things generally; and, though by no means a first-class literary workman, there are yet at times wonderful vividness and truth about some of his off-hand sketches which, of their kind, it would not be easy to match. How clearly the coon-hunter of Kentucky, loading his rifle, stands before one in the following passage: "The hunter has taken an axe from the wood-pile, and, returning, assures us that the night is clear, and that we shall have rare sport. He blows through his rifle to ascertain that it is clear, examines his flint, and thrusts a feather into the touch-hole. To a leathern bag swung at his side is attached a powder-horn; his sheathed knife is there also; below hangs a narrow strip of home-spun linen. He takes from his bag a bullet, pulls with his teeth the wooden stopper from his powder-horn, lays the ball on one hand, and with the other pours the powder upon it until it is just overtopped. Raising the horn to his mouth, he again closes it with the stopper, and restores it to its place. He introduces the powder into the tube, springs the box of his gun, greases the 'patch' over some wetted tallow, or damps it, then places it on the honeycombed muzzle of his piece. The bullet is placed on the patch over the bore, and pressed with the handle of the knife, which now trims the edges f the linen. The elastic hickory rod, held with both hands, smoothly pushes the ball to its bed: once, twice, thrice has it rebounded. The rifle leaps as it were into the hunter's arms, the feather is drawn from the touch-hole, the powder fills the pan, which is closed. 'Now I am ready, ' cries the woodsman." It is worthy of note that neither of the great American ornithologists was in the strict sense an American. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John James Audubon's paintings of birds are as familiar as they are beautiful. But even among his admirers, many may be surprised to learn that Audubon was a gifted writer. In this one-of-a-kind anthology, Christoph Irmscher and Richard J. King have curated a collection of Audubon's coastal and sea writing, which represent Audubon's most compelling and evocative depictions of the natural world and early nineteenth-century American life. The collection is geographically diverse, bringing to light the variety of people and wildlife Audubon met or observed, pulling from the massive Ornithological Biography (1831-1839) as well as the "Autobiography" and journals. The editors supplement the selections with an instructive introduction and powerful coda, section headnotes, explanatory notes, and an appendix linking Audubon's species to current taxonomy and geographic ranges. The book is lavishly illustrated as well. There is much more in Audubon at Sea than descriptions of birds: we have stories of life aboard ship, of travel in early America and Audubon's work habits, the origins of iconic paintings, and, in the end, the carefully drawn commentary on a flawed and, at best, ambiguous hero"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind, lavishly illustrated anthology celebrates Audubon’s connection to the sea through both his words and art. The American naturalist John James Audubon (1785–1851) is widely remembered for his iconic paintings of American birdlife. But as this anthology makes clear, Audubon was also a brilliant writer—and his keen gaze took in far more than creatures of the sky. Culled from his published and unpublished writings, Audubon at Sea explores Audubon’s diverse observations of the ocean, the coast, and their human and animal inhabitants. With Audubon expert Christoph Irmscher and scholar of the sea Richard J. King as our guides, we set sail from the humid expanses of the American South to the shores of England and the chilly landscapes of the Canadian North. We learn not only about the diversity of sea life Audubon documented—birds, sharks, fish, and whales—but also about life aboard ship, travel in early America, Audubon’s work habits, and the origins of beloved paintings. As we face an unfathomable loss of seabirds today, Audubon’s warnings about the fragility of birdlife in his time are prescient and newly relevant. Charting the course of Audubon’s life and work, from his birth in Haiti to his death in New York City, Irmscher and King’s sweeping introduction and carefully drawn commentary confront the challenges Audubon’s legacy poses for us today, including his participation in American slavery and the thousands of birds he killed for his art. Rounded out by hundreds of historical and ornithological notes and beautiful illustrations, and with a foreword by distinguished photographer and conservationist Subhankar Banerjee, Audubon at Sea is the most comprehensively annotated collection of Audubon’s work ever published.
