Book excerpt: Even with IDEA and ESSA updates that strengthen educational opportunities, students with ED continue to be misunderstood and understudied. Poor outcomes in postsecondary education and postschool employment have consistently been reported. At least once every 6 years, states are required to report on the progress of students with disabilities. Students with ED were interviewed at high school exit and one year following graduation to collect postschool outcome data also known as Indicator 14. The purpose of this study was to describe the postsecondary education and postschool employment experiences of students with ED and evaluate student-level (gender, ethnicity, academic achievement) and transition programming (inclusion, CTE, work study) variables into causal methods to predict postschool outcomes for students with ED. Findings from the logistic regression analyses indicate that gender, ethnicity, academic achievement, and inclusion were significant in predicting a postsecondary education outcome. Furthermore, gender and CTE were significant in predicting a postschool employment outcome for students with ED. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine which social-emotional skills may predict postsecondary enrollment for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities are less likely to enroll in any form of postsecondary education and in turn experience poorer post-education outcomes than their general education peers. Using data from the second National Longitudinal Transition Study (NLTS2), a classification tree analysis was conducted on teacher-rated social-emotional behaviors in an attempt to determine which social-emotional skills were the strongest predictors of postsecondary enrollment. Items assessing social-emotional skills were selected from the second wave of teacher surveys based on their alignment with the broad taxonomy of social-emotional skills created by Caldarella and Merrell. The results of the classification tree analysis showed that one of the selected social-emotional items, teacher rated ability to follow directions, was the most significant predictor of postsecondary enrollment for students with disabilities. In general, the results suggest that compliance and, to a lesser extent, peer-relations skills, in addition to family income, predict postsecondary enrollment for students with high-incidence disabilities. This finding suggests that social-emotional skills play an important role in postsecondary enrollment for SWD, providing support for the use of social-emotional skills interventions in improving postsecondary enrollment rates and potentially post-educational outcomes for SWD.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of self-monitoring of performance on the academic achievement of students with emotional and behavioral disorders in a middle school math class. The findings suggest that students with emotional disturbance continue to struggle with the challenge of appropriately navigating all of the social and academic structures of the school day. These students faced incredible challenges in educational settings that impaired them from being able to access the curriculum alongside their general education peers, causing them to fall further behind academically.

Book excerpt: The National Longitudinal Transition Study (NLTS) provided the first national pictureof the lives of youth with disabilities in their high school years and in their transition to early adulthood. NLTS analyses from the early 1990s showed tremendous variation across disability categories in the experiences and achievements of youth, yet the outcomes of youth in the primary disability category of emotional disturbance (ED) were found to be ?particularly troubling? (Wagner et al., 1991, p. 11:3). Youth with ED demonstrated a pattern of disconnectedness from school, academic failure, poor social adjustment, and criminal justice system involvement, although there were positive findings regarding other aspects of their lives, such as employment (Wagner, 1995).The potential social costs of poor outcomes among these youth spurred new policies, programs, and interventions to improve their prospects for a successful transition to adulthood. A National Agenda for Achieving Better Results for Children and Youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance (Chesapeake Institute, 1994) was one reflection of that increased national attention, as were amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990 and 1997, and research priorities established by the Office of Special Education Programs of the U.S. Department of Education. National Longitudinal Transition Study 2( NLTS 2) provides an opportunity to take another look at youth with ED, and ask how have their experiences changed in the years since NLTS. This Data Brief takes a fresh look at selected characteristics of youth with ED and their households that distinguish them from other youth with disabilities and/or from youth in the general population. It also describes aspects of their school histories and their current school programs and experiences, as well as indicators of their academic performance and social adjustment at school. Finally, the activities of youth with ED outside of school are highlighted. gorous course-taking in general education settings and increased services and supports to help students succeed, suggesting that students with ED may be better prepared to complete high school and to pursue postsecondary education. At the same time, youth with ED have a pattern of difficult experiences associated with school throughout their school careers, and they have parents who express dissatisfaction with their children?s schools and school programs more frequently than parents of youth with disabilities as a whole. This document provides 7 references, 3 footnotes, as well as 9 exhibits illustrating statistical comparisons in each category of the study.
