Book excerpt: "Large uncertainties exist in the estimated load of sediment being moved through the land surface system and ultimately reaching the world’s coastal oceans. The lack of reliable information on the amount of sediment in rivers limits our understanding of the impact of sediment on fluvial ecosystems and the downstream environment. To account for the scarcity of sediment observations worldwide, many studies have attempted to develop global erosion and sediment transport models with the goal of refining sediment load estimates. While considerable advancement has been made in the development of large-scale, spatially explicit soil detachment and fluvial sediment transport models, the transfer of sediment on land, before the material reaches the river network, has largely been overlooked during large-scale modelling efforts. Yet, the dynamics of sediment on slopes, known as hillslope sediment connectivity, provide the critical link relating plot-scale soil erosion rates to catchment-wide sediment yield in rivers. This thesis investigates the large-scale applicability of three existing hillslope sediment connectivity modelling approaches, two of which were originally developed for small-scale applications (the IC-SDR and SEDEM approaches) and one developed globally using a coarse grid cell resolution of ~10km (the Rouse Number approach). Their performance for high-resolution large-scale applications is assessed by applying them over the African continent using globally applicable data of 90 m resolution. First, 46 African catchments with reliable sediment observations were selected by conducting a screening process based on sampling frequency, length of measuring period, location accuracy, sampling method, and the presence of major known sediment deposition zones such as lakes, dams, and floodplains. Then, the three hillslope sediment connectivity approaches were applied over the selected catchments and calibrated and/or validated using the catchment sediment load observations. Cursory applications of the three approaches using literature parameter values revealed that, while the IC-SDR approach slightly outperformed the SEDEM and Rouse Number methods, predictions from all three approaches highly underestimated observed sediment load in the receiving river. Therefore, parameter configurations reported by studies conducted at smaller scales or coarser resolution are found to be inappropriate at the scale and resolution of this study. In fact, applying the uncalibrated modelling approaches worsens the accuracy of the sediment load estimates compared to original RUSLE-produced soil detachment rates. Finally, an in-depth application of the IC-SDR approach, in which the model was refined and calibrated, improved RUSLE-produced sediment load estimates using a single, regional best-fit parameter configuration, indicating the strong potential of the IC-SDR approach for global applications. Findings from this thesis can contribute to larger sediment modelling efforts aiming to develop a harmonious global erosion model representing all erosion processes and sediment transfer dynamics, from the source point of soil detachment to the final delivery to the world’s oceans"--

Book excerpt: Abstract : Gully erosion is the process by which running water cuts new unstable channels into erodible regolith. It causes severe land degradation, is a major component of contemporary sediment budgets, and is a major source of sediment pollution to aquatic ecosystems. In northern Australia, there is widespread gully erosion into unconfined alluvial deposits on active and abandoned floodplains {u2013} here defined as alluvial gully erosion. In catchments draining to the Gulf of Carpentaria, alluvial gullies can cover 0.2% to 1.0 % of the total catchment area and locally>10% of the floodplain area. Alluvial gully erosion has been poorly documented and differs substantially from colluvial or hillslope gullying in south-eastern or northern Australia. The objectives of this research were to investigate and quantify alluvial gully erosion processes and rates at a variety of spatial and temporal scales across a pilot study area, which encompasses the Mitchell River fluvial megafan on the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland. Along the Mitchell megafan, alluvial gullies are concentrated along main drainage channels. Their scarp heights and potential energy are highly correlated to the local relief between the floodplain and river thalweg, which is a result of river incision into the megafan since the Pleistocene. Other factors such as floodplain hydrology, soil texture and chemistry, vegetation cover, and land-use disturbance also influence the distribution and propagation of gullies, via changes in the driving and resisting forces. The frequency of river flood inundation of alluvial gullies on the floodplain changes longitudinally according to river incision and confinement. Near the top of the megafan, flood water is contained in the macro-channel up to the 100-yr recurrence interval (RI) but still backwaters adjacent alluvial gullies. In downstream Holocene floodplains, complete inundation of alluvial gullies occurs beyond the 3- to 5-yr RI and can contribute significantly to total annual erosion. However, a majority of gully scarp retreat is still driven by direct rainfall and infiltration-excess runoff, with the 24-hr rainfall total being the most predictive variable. This direct erosion is enhanced by inherent soil dispersibility and the lack of vegetative cover, with the later if present having the potential to dissipate the effective kinetic energy of rainfall and promote infiltration.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has identified the Tsitsa River Catchment on the Mzimvubu River as a potential site for a water resource development. The soils in the Tsitsa Catchment are prone to extreme soil erosion, in particular gullying. The sediment generated from these gullies and other forms of erosion will have a detrimental effect on any water resource development. Changing climate and land use will also affect soil erosion dynamics and thus need to be considered before any development is planned in the catchment. Previous studies have mapped the gully systems in the catchment as well as used hydrological models to determine erosion from sheet and rill processes. However, these studies did not account for the effects of change in land use or climate. The mapping of the gullies was also done manually, which is extremely time-consuming and is susceptible to human error. This study aims to determine the sediment yield in the catchment under current and future climate and land use scenarios as well as develop a methodology to identify and map the gullies automatically in order to determine the rate of gully growth from a time series of images. The study had two main components, the first was to study gully erosion in the catchment. In the second section the sheet and rill aspects of erosion under various climate and land use changes were modelled. Using object-based image analysis (OBIA) on SPOT 5 images a methodology was created to automate the task of gully mapping. This was applied to two SPOT 5 data sets one from 2007 and the other from 2012 in order to determine the rate of gully growth over the five-year period. Various accuracy assessments were also conducted to assess the accuracy of the methodology. It was determined that the methodology had an overall accuracy of 98% for the 2012 image and 99% for the 2007 image. There was an overall increase in gully erosion in the catchment by 28% in the five-year period. The estimated sediment yield generated from the gullies ranged between 7 and 14 t/ha/yr. It was concluded that OBIA resulted in faster processing times and more objective classification results. The second part of the study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to determine the sediment yield from sheet and rill erosion. SWAT only considers sheet and rill aspects of erosion and disregards gully erosion thus both methods needs to be incorporated into the study in order to understand the complete dynamics of soil erosion in the catchment. SWAT was used to model the current land use and climate scenario using land cover data and observed weather data for the 2007-2012 period. On average 0.18 t/ha/yr of sediment is generated in the catchment from sheet and rill erosion. Using climate data from 1969 and projected to 2100, future sediment yield from sheet and rill erosion was estimated. The effects of possible land use change on sheet and rill erosion was also estimated by changing the land use component in SWAT into various crops that may be cultivated in the catchment over the next century. The results of the land use change showed that the current land use is optimal for minimal sheet and rill erosion and converting to maize crops will have the greatest impact on sediment yield This study aimed to understand the dynamics of soil erosion under current and changing land use and climate scenarios. It was concluded that the majority of the sediment is derived from gully erosion, which accounts for up to 70 times more sediment yield annually than sheet and rill erosion. Gully formation and propagation in the catchment is of critical concern to any land or water developments proposed for the Tsitsa Catchment.
