Book excerpt: "The Warm Home Cool Home (WHCH) program is a home energy audit and retrofit program delivered by the Brotherhood of St Laurence, in partnership with the Moreland Energy Foundation, Moreland City Council and Sustainability Victoria. It is a free service for Commonwealth concession card holders residing in the City of Moreland. The program consists of a home energy audit, recommendations of actions householders can take to reduce their energy use, and assistance to implement some recommendations such as ceiling insulation, tap aerators, draught seals on doors and windows and low-energy light globes. The objective of this research is to identify the social impacts within households of the Warm Home Cool Home program. Specifically, the research investigates relationships between the audit/retrofit, energy use and energy use behaviour change. It will measure impacts on aspects of home comfort, financial hardship and health of low-income households."--Introduction.

Book excerpt: The transformation from a carbon-based world economy to one based on high efficiency and renewables is a necessary step if human society is to achieve sustainability. But while scientists and researchers have made significant advances in energy efficiency and renewable technologies in recent years, consumers have yet to see dramatic changes in the marketplace—due in large part to government policies and programs that favor the use of fossil fuels. Energy Revolution examines the policy options for mitigating or removing the entrenched advantages held by fossil fuels and speeding the transition to a more sustainable energy future, one based on improved efficiency and a shift to renewable sources such as solar, wind, and bioenergy. The book: examines today's energy patterns and trends and their consequences describes the barriers to a more sustainable energy future and how those barriers can be overcome provides ten case studies of integrated strategies that have been effective in different parts of the world examines international policies and institutions and recommends ways they could be improved reviews global trends that suggest that the transition to renewables and increased efficiency is underway and is achievable Energy policy represents a linchpin for achieving a broader transition to a more sustainable economy. Energy Revolution offers a unique focus on policies and programs, and on the lessons provided by recent experience. It represents a key statement of the available options for reforming energy policy that have proven to be successful, and is an essential work for policymakers, researchers, and anyone concerned with energy and sustainability issues.

Book Synopsis Promoting Sustainable Living by : Justyna Karakiewicz
Download or read book Promoting Sustainable Living written by Justyna Karakiewicz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current images of sustainability are often designed to instil fear and force change, not because we believe in it, but because we fear the consequences of inaction. Moving away from negative portrayals of sustainability, this book identifies the factors that motivate people to aspire towards sustainable living. It introduces the notion of sustainability as an "object of desire" that will allow people not to be scared of the future but rather to dream about it and look forward to a better quality of life. Tracing the history of major changes in our society that have dramatically altered our perceptions, beliefs and attitudes about sustainability, the book analyses the role of communications in persuading people of the benefits of sustainable living. It describes our current desires and dreams and explains why we need to change. Finally, the book suggests what could be done to not only make sustainability an object of desire, but also introduce hopes and dreams for a better future into our everyday lives. This inspiring and interdisciplinary book provides innovative insights for researchers, students and professionals in a range of disciplines, in particular environment and sustainability, sustainable marketing and advertising, and psychology.
