Book Synopsis Corpus Linguistics Beyond the Word by :
Download or read book Corpus Linguistics Beyond the Word written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will be of particular interest to readers interested in expanding the applications of corpus linguistics techniques through new tools and approaches. The text includes selected papers from the Fifth North American Symposium, hosted by the Linguistics Department at Montclair State University in Montclair New Jersey in May 2004. The symposium papers represented several areas of corpus studies including language development, syntactic analysis, pragmatics and discourse, language change, register variation, corpus creation and annotation, and practical applications of corpus work, primarily in language teaching, but also in medical training and machine translation. A common thread through most of the papers was the use of corpora to study domains longer than the word. Not surprisingly, fully half of the papers deal with the computational tools and linguistic strategies needed to search for and analyze these longer spans of language while most of the remaining papers examine particular syntactic and rhetorical properties of one or more corpora.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction to the 1st International Conference on Computers for Han- cappedPersons(Vienna,1989)byAMinTjoa(UniversityofVienna)andRoland Wagner(UniversityofLinz)?nishedwiththefollowingmissionstatementonthe “Future Direction on Computers for Handicapped Persons”: “The di?erent themes show that a lot of problems are solved by the usage of computer technology for helping handicapped persons, for instance for the blind and visually handicapped. A consequence of the discussed themes there are two directions which should be done in the next years. One direction is obvious. The tools must be improved and research and development work should be extended to all groups of handicapped (even if they are numerically not so large as for instancetheblindorvisuallyhandicappedpersons). Ontheothersideinthearea of social implications there is an increasing demand on social science studies on overall computer use among disabled persons. Because sources are in principle missing today about disabled persons work tasks, research in this ?eld must begin by trying to survey this aspect. Particular attention should be paid to the extent and character of computer use among the handicapped in work life. There are a lot of questions, which should be answered during the next years for reaching the aim of rehabilitation. ” Fifteen years later the 9th International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs (Paris, 2004) o?ered a comprehensive and deepened view on general awareness, special research and individual applications conce- ing disabled people and their participation in our society.

This volume offers a strategy for maximizing ease-of-use and ease-of-learning through an integrated performance support systems approach. The text provides how-to guidance throughout that developers can apply directly to the design of their performance support tools and products. Rather than cover a few specific topic areas, it examines the entire spectrum of performance support. The book explains how to match performance support methods to task requirements, gives an overview of important user characteristics, and provides general guidance for presentation, layout, formatting, media selection, the use of color and icons, and accessibility. Evaluation checklists are included in the appendices and are also available online. Although this book primarily addresses the development of performance support for large software systems, the principles and approaches are valuable for any systems development environment.

Download or read book Input in English-Medium Instruction written by Francesca Costa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book investigates the input provided by lecturers in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) to reveal the characteristics of both written and oral inputs in EMI settings and their pedagogical implications. The book works on two assumptions: firstly, that field exposure to input is the prime mover of the teaching-learning process and secondly, that its quality is fundamental for the development of discipline-specific knowledge with particular reference to university settings. The volume is timely as it contains original research addressing both theoretical reflections and practical information on how content lecturers can enhance the effectiveness of their teaching practice through English including a relatively unexplored and increasingly relevant topic represented by the synergy between spoken input and written and multimodal materials. Moreover, it provides insight for EAP teachers and EMI training professionals into how lecturer training programmes and activities can be improved by focusing on communicative functions and presentation strategies that can selectively address and improve students’ mastery of disciplinary discourse.
