Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book entitled "Forages and Fodder: Indian Perspective" contains different aspects viz., production, protection, PGR management, consumption; preservation and socio-economic aspects of forage and fodder crops. The present book is one of the latest and updated manuscripts related to forage and fodder in Indian context. Forage includes all plant species directly or indirectly consumed by animals and cultivated forage crops occupy about 5.0 per cent of the total cultivated area of India. The animal fodder consists of several plants species which are used to feed the cattle either raw (green and cut fodder) or after minor processing (such as silage) while pastures are grassland, usually with improved species, carefully managed with inputs such as irrigation and manures for grazing of livestock. The National Commission on Agriculture (1976) recommended that a minimum 10 per cent of the arable area in the country (about 16.5 million ha) should be under improved forage crops to meet the green forage needs of the ever growing livestock population. At the same time, plant genetic resource (PGR), which carries germplasm for present and future needs, can be utilized for producing varieties having resistance to biotic and abiotic stress as well as for its quality enrichments. Weed growth should not be overlooked as it hampers yield, lowers forage quality, increases the incidence of disease and insect problems, causes premature stand loss, and creates harvesting problems. Some weeds are unpalatable and may be poisonous for livestock. Updated information on insect pest problem is well documented in the book. It is established fact that insect and pests cause yield loss, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, and their effects depend on many factors like, the level of infestation, crop variety, agronomic practices and other related factors. Insect pests induced losses are not only in term of green or dry fodder yield but also on quality factors which affect the re-growth period and canopy structure. Among the other constraints, the diseases have always been a major limiting factor for fodder cultivation. Fertilizer management, organic farming and climatic conditions required for different fodder and forage crops are very well illustrated in the present volume. Women play a key role as seed selectors and in seedling production and their knowledge on seeds and seed storage contributes to viability of agricultural diversity and production. Women also play an important role in livestock management which includes, care of animals, grazing and fodder collection, cleaning of animal sheds, processing milk and livestock products. Despite their considerable involvement and contribution, women's role in livestock production has been underestimated, undervalued and widely ignored. The book also covers areas like marketing of forage and fodders and all together contains 32 chapters on various issues of forage and fodder production and management.

Book excerpt: The development of legume use in agricultural production in the tropics lags far behind the temperate areas and extensive research over recent decades has aimed to rectify the lack of available leguminous fodder species available for heavy clay soils. This book draws together that research and explores the importance of heavy clay soils to agricultural productivity in the tropics and subtropics and the identification of adapted, productive forage legumes for these environments. Providing an invaluable example of how a global search for adapted and productive forage germplasm has been - and can be - undertaken, and allowing access to a significant body of knowledge that was acquired before the digitalization of reports, this book will be a key resource for new scientists and experienced researchers in the areas of agriculture and forage agronomy.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive, indepth and up to date information on all aspects of silvipasture, wasteland management, forage production for livestock, tree - pasture interactions, establishment and management of silvipastoral systems and silvipastoral perspectives for climate change mitigation. For the first time in India, authors have attempted to divide whole of India in to four major natural silvipastoral covers which will make the book a matter of interest for all. Further, it also deals with the livestock production and silvipasture in light of contemporary issues like climate change while emphasizing future thrust areas in degraded land development and silvipasture. The glossary of important related terms and scientific names of common trees, grasses and legumes in the end increases its usefulness. This book is written in simple language and will be of great interest for students, teachers, researchers and planners.

'Sir Albert Howard in India' provides an overview of the Howards' work in India and the development of the Indore composting method. It is regarded as a classic study of effective Third World development work. 'The Earth's Green Carpet' is intended as a layman's introduction to the revolutionary work of the Howards, stressing the need for in-depth understanding of the interface between ecology, farming and human health.

Book excerpt: Forage crops are important for the economy of our country as these crops provide major nutritional base in the livestock ration. The National Commission on Agriculture has also emphasized in its report that in order to achieve the so-called ‘White Revolution’ it will be necessary to provide required emphasis on research relating to the improvement and management of forages. India’s average availability of milk per head per day comes to only 100 ml as against our requirement of 220 ml per day. With the increase in world human population and economic growth, the demand for animal products such as milk, meat and eggs in the human diet is bound to increase. The success of dairy and poultry programmes will largely depend on the availability of required forages and feeds since almost 60-65% investment is invariably on these essential requirements. A recent estimate indicates that the deficiency in total forage need is about 40% of dry forage and about 24% of green fodder. This deficit is likely to increase further as (i) the area under forage crop is declining because of the pressing problems of growing cereals and other cash crops to meet the increasing pressure of population growth, (ii) the animal population is increasing every year by almost 2% (iii) cultivable land is decreasing due to urbanization and industrial growth and (iv) forages in future are going to have competition from liquid fuel shortage. Recent interests in the development of technology for the economic conversion of cellulosic material to liquid fuels, however, have given rise to estimates of several hundred million metric tons of lignocellulosic material being used annually for their new developments. With the development of these technologies, the impact on ruminants production would be substantial, so there is going to be a vital challenge to meet the requirement of forages in the near future.

There are more than 1500 gene banks around the world, and genetic resources are maintained in nature reserves and on farms. Genetic diversity serves as the starting point for breeding crops with improved nutritional quality, higher yields, and better tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses. However, genetic diversity also provides opportunities for diversifying farm and food systems. Utilization depends on access to material and information. However, many gene banks experience backlogs in characterization, evaluation, regeneration, viability tests, plant health monitoring, and information sharing. This research topic focuses on advances in plant genetic resource conservation and utilization.

Book excerpt: This volume studies the concept and relevance of HISTEM (History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine) in shaping the histories of colonial and postcolonial South Asia. Tracing its evolution from the establishment of the East India Company through to the early decades after the Independence of India, it highlights the ways in which the discipline has changed over the years and examines the various influences that have shaped it. Drawing on extensive case studies, the book offers valuable insights into diverse themes such as the East–West encounter, appropriation of new knowledge, science in translation and communication, electricity and urbanization, the colonial context of engineering education, science of hydrology, oil and imperialism, epidemic and empire, vernacular medicine, gender and medicine, as well as environment and sustainable development in the colonial and postcolonial milieu. An indispensable text on South Asia’s experience of modernity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of modern South Asian studies, modern Indian history, sociology, history of science, cultural studies, colonialism, as well as studies on Science, Technology, and Society (STS).
