This book was released on 2021 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights findings from Phase I of a project designed to evaluate the ruggedness of the standards for cyclic fatigue testing using an Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT). These standards include AASHTO TP 107-18 and 133-19, which are applicable to 100-mm diameter and 38-mm diameter test specimens, respectively. The ruggedness evaluation conducted adheres to the requirements of ASTM E1169-14 and integrates ASTM C1067-12 recommendations, which are specifically for construction materials. The experimental factors evaluated included air-void content, specimen height, diameter difference between loading platen and specimen, loading-platen parallelism, rest period between the dynamic modulus fingerprint and cyclic fatigue test, strain level, and temperature. Based on the outcomes of this experiment and several supplementary studies, changes to the AASHTO TP 107-18 and TP 133-19 protocols were proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanistic-empirical flexible pavement design procedures proposed for use within the 2002 Design Guide require the input of the dynamic modulus (E*) of hot-mix asphalt concrete. In addition, the E* test has been proposed as a "simple performance test" for use in mixture design and construction quality control. The objective of this study included conducting the dynamic modulus test, evaluating the accuracy/variability of test results, and constructing master curves for the mixtures tested. The hotmix asphalt mixes tested in this research are typically used for pavement construction in Arkansas, and binder content and air voids were varied to simulate typical construction variability. The analysis showed that the variability of the average dynamic modulus for each set of four replicates was acceptable. Since the dynamic modulus tests were run at intermediate temperatures in this study, a modified procedure, using Arrhenius and power functions, was employed to construct the master curves. Based on the master curves, the effects of aggregate size, binder content, and air voids on the tested asphalt mixtures were evaluated and determined to be consistent and reasonable. The testing procedure and results of this study were recommended for use in a new project to characterize the stiffness of Arkansas mixtures to prepare input data for the proposed 2002 Design Guide.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Fatigue Analysis of a Common TxDOT Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete Mixture by :
Download or read book Preliminary Fatigue Analysis of a Common TxDOT Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete Mixture written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) focused research efforts on improving mixture design to preclude rutting in the early life of the pavement, which also offered increased resistance to moisture damage, but fatigue cracking may surface in the long term particularly if the binder stiffens excessively due to aging. The primary goal of this project is to evaluate and recommend a fatigue analysis system for TxDOT designs to ensure adequate mixture fatigue performance in a particular pavement structure under specific environmental and loading conditions. A secondary goal of comparing fatigue resistance of commonly used TxDOT mixtures including investigating the effects of aging will also be realized.
Book Synopsis Effects of Asphalt Mixture Characteristics on Dynamic Modulus and Fatigue Performance by : Robert Austin Etheridge
Download or read book Effects of Asphalt Mixture Characteristics on Dynamic Modulus and Fatigue Performance written by Robert Austin Etheridge and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents results from an experimental study on the dynamic modulus and fatigue testing of hot mix asphalts (HMA) commonly used in Georgia. Seventeen mixtures with varying aggregate sources, gradations, binder types, and asphalt contents were used to 1) expand the Georgia department of transportation's (GDOT) material input library for dynamic modulus and 2) recommend a test method that predicts realistic strain levels and better fatigue cracking prediction for fatigue performance. The effects of HMA mixture properties on dynamic modulus testing indicate that gradation, binder type, and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) greatly affected moduli. To evaluate fatigue performance of HMA mixtures, three different fatigue tests were used in this study: Cyclic direct tension test based on simplified viscoelastic continuum damage (S-VECD) model, Semicircle Bend Test (SCB), and modified overlay test (OT). The findings from these tests suggest gradation and binder type significantly impact pavement performance

Book Synopsis Fracture Properties and Fatigue Cracking Resistance of Asphalt Binders by : Arash Motamed
Download or read book Fracture Properties and Fatigue Cracking Resistance of Asphalt Binders written by Arash Motamed and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several different types of modifiers are increasingly being used to improve the performance of asphalt binders or to achieve desired mixture production characteristics (e.g., Warm Mix Asphalt). However, current Superpave performance specifications do not accurately reflect the performance characteristics of these modified binders. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the inherent fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt binders in the form of a matrix with rigid particle inclusions. The underlying rationale for this approach was to subject the binders to a state of stress that is similar to the one in a full asphalt mixture. This was achieved by fabricating and testing composite specimens of the asphalt binders and glass beads with a specified gradation. Four asphalt binders with similar true temperature grades but different modifiers were used in this study. The viscoelastic and fatigue cracking characteristics of the binders were measured using the glass bead-binder composite specimens in a dynamic shear rheometer at an intermediate temperature. The results demonstrate that the four asphalt binders modified using different methods had different damage characteristics despite the fact that these four binders were rated to have a similar performance grade based on the Superpave specifications. Fatigue cracking characteristics of the glass bead-binder test specimens used in this study were qualitatively very similar to the fatigue cracking characteristics of full asphalt mixtures using the same binders. The rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the four glass bead-binder mixtures compared reasonably well to the rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the full asphalt mixtures that incorporated these asphalt binders.

Book Synopsis Resilient Modulus and the Fatigue Properties of Kansas Hot Mix Asphalt Mixes by : Stefan A. Romanoschi
Download or read book Resilient Modulus and the Fatigue Properties of Kansas Hot Mix Asphalt Mixes written by Stefan A. Romanoschi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study aimed to determine the dynamic modulus, bending stiffness and fatigue properties of four representative Superpave Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures used in the construction of base layers of Kansas flexible pavements and to compare the measured values with those predicted by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Design Guide. To achieve these objectives, asphalt concrete beams were tested in third point-bending at constant strain, at four temperatures and four levels of strain. Dynamic resilient modulus tests were performed on asphalt cylindrical specimens at five temperatures and five loading frequencies. Multi-linear regression analysis was performed to develop a linear relationship between the bending stiffness and the fatigue life for the asphalt mixes tested.
