Book Synopsis Self-lubricating Composites of Porous Nickel and Nickel-chromium Alloy Impregnated with Barium Fluoride-calcium Fluoride Eutectic by : Harold E. Sliney

This book was released on 1966 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-lubricating composites were prepared by vacuum-impregnating porous nickel or Inconel X-750 (nickel-chromium alloy) with a barium fluoride - calcium fluoride eutectic composition. Density measurements and photomicrographs of the resulting composite structures demonstrated that this process completely filled the voids of the porous metals with the fluoride eutectic. The compressive yield strength of the nickel composites was quite low (about 30 000 psi); therefore, in order to avoid severe plastic deformation during the friction and wear experiments, it was necessary to employ moderate contact stresses. However, alloy composites were comparatively resistant to plastic deformation; the compressive yield strength was 78 000 pounds per square inch or about 75 percent of the strength of the age-hardened alloy in the dense, wrought form. The air at moderate contact stresses, the friction and wear properties of nickel composites were only slightly inferior to those of the alloy composites. Oxidation of nickel composites becomes serious at 12000 F, however, and limits the usefulness of this material in air to a maximum temperature of about 11000 F. The corresponding temperature limitation of the alloy composites in air was about 1350 F. In a hydrogen atmosphere, the alloy composites performed satisfactorily to 15000 F and may be suitable to somewhat higher temperatures. The frictional properties of the composites were significantly improved by the application of a thin, sintered coating of the eutectic fluoride to the bearing surfaces of the composites.

Walitt and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amicon nonmetallic coating system previously developed for use on chromium-rich alloys was investigated for use on TD-Nickel in the 2200 to 2400 F. range. Major advances were made during the program. A simple air oxidation pretreatment of the base alloy resulted in excellent coating adhesion without special chromium precoating. A new family of coatings from talc, BaCrO4 and B2O3 were developed which gave major performance advantages over previous coatings. Further additions of forsterite increased coating oxidation resistance still further. The program resulted in a new coating for TD-Nickel which can be spray applied and fired in air to give a thin, tough and abrasion resistant coating providing at least an order-of-magnitude reduction in oxidation at temperatures up to 2300 F. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop and upgrade aluminum containing coating systems for the protection of nickel and cobalt alloys used in gas turbine hot section components. A comprehensive investigation of modifying elements was undertaken and correlated with hot corrosion resistance and diffusional stability under blade and vane cycle conditions (1950 amd 2200F peak temperatures, respectively). The modifying elements and combinations evaluated were Co, Mn, Cr, Ta, Fe, Mg, Si, Y, Cr-Mn, Co-Cr and Fe-Cr. The influence of the modified coatings on mechanical properties, stress-oxidation, impact and thermal shock of the superalloys was also determined. (Author).
