Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Village: Russian Impressions In my hotel room in Petrograd, Tarasov was doing his packing. I had already finished mine. It was a stifling afternoon in August, 1917, and we were trying to get off for a trip to a little Village deep in the heart of the country. But I had small hope of catching the train. My companion was a man about forty, huge of limb and nearly bald. His face was flushed and perspiring. A vast disorderly heap of belongings lay all around him on the floor, and he was mauling things about with a kind of desperate patience. To my imprecations he said not a word. I heard him panting softly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Realities: Being Impressions Gathered During Some Recent Journeys in Russia Sixty years ago there lived in one of the southern counties a lady well qualified by precedence and acres to take the lead in the country-side. To her came one day the Admiral's daughter, keen on doing something for the comfort of our soldiers then beginning a winter in the Crimea. Now the great lady was a cautious person, and she gave it as her opinion that to provide for the Queen's soldiers by private efforts might be derogatory to Her Majesty, and perhaps not a proper thing to do. Within a very few weeks Queen Victoria herself was organising work societies to alleviate the hard ships at the front, and the great lady was in a state of desperation because she had missed an opportunity of fame as the patroness of the first branch of the Queen's Soldiers' Relief Society, as I think it was called. It lays no claim to be either exhaustive or even of any practical use to the serious student of the Russian Evolution. It is written for the ignorant, and with the object of helping them to decide whether they wish to take an interest in what is now happening in Russia, or not. I cannot take them into the house and show them all over it from floor to ceiling with the knowledge and authority of a master-builder all I can do is to open a small window and ask them to look through it and observe certain things, pointing out how far these things are typical of the whole and my hope is that the glimpses I have given them will enable them to decide whether they wish to go and knock at the front door and investigate for themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Experiences and Impressions in Russia Russia has called to the colors since the war began not less than men. This constitutes the largest army assembled by any one nation in the history of the world. Of this vast number it is estimated that fully have already been killed or have died as the result of wounds or diseases occasioned by the war. Another are today prisoners of war in Germany, austria-hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Another may. Be classified as permanently ineffective, chiefly those who have been seriously mutilated in warfare or shattered by disease. This leaves men as comprising the total strength of the Rus sian army of today. Some authorities whom I consulted give a somewhat lower figure, but more would place it even higher. Of this army of today probably are to be found in the seventy corps on the European front and the five on the Asiatic front; in the depots or reserves; in connection with garrisons and communications-athus leaving a little over in training, on leave or otherwise not immediately avail able for military operations, but potentially a most important asset. On this vast host of Russian men and boys rests the tre mendons responsibility of maintaining and pressing the war on the long drawn out eastern front. The effectiveness and faith fulness with which they perform this critical duty will determine, far more largely than we in America have realized, the extent of the exertions and sacrifices, and the laying down of life and substance, of the American people in connection with the great struggle. Whatever can be done, therefore to ensure and develop the highest working efficiency and truly triumphant spirit of the Russian soldiers has a most direct, practical, and vital bearing on the destiny of America and the other Allies. As a member ofthe Special Diplomatic Mission to Russia which had been charged by President Wilson with the responsibility of studying ways in which America and Russia might best cooperate in the war, I gave not a little attention, in accordance with the wish of our Chairman, Mr. Root, to the consideration of this large and press ing problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of the Duab (Russian Turkestan) The English financial interest in Russia is steadily on the increase, and it cannot be furthered, it may even be seriously damaged by the hysterical outbreaks in the English press. The press is misusing its power and overrating its importance when trying to meddle with the internal affairs of a great and independent State. Were the daily paper in a position to keep an army and navy at its own expense, it would probably not risk them with the same light heart as it risks those which it has not paid for. All this talk of Russian oppression, and the comparing of it to the British liberty, is gratuitous insuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But it is unfortunate when a few scribbling pens can lead a nation to false impressions. And here I would point out that the Russian immigrant to this country knows about as much of his own country as the average street pedlar in Whitechapel knows of the British Empire. I took some friends of mine one day to White chapel to demonstrate this very fact. I gave them leave to select their own subjects for examination. They found the man they wanted, and we sat down to talk. He was a well-dressed man who could read and write Russian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life to-Day Y first inclination, when the entirely unex pected proposal of the Publishers came to me to write this book, was immediately to decline. There are so many well-known writers on Russia, whose books are an unfailing pleasure and source of information, that it seemed to me to be nothing less than presumption to add to their number. But when I was assured that there seems to be a great desire just now for a book which, as the Publishers expressed it, should not attempt an elaborate sketch of the country, nor any detailed description of its system of government and administration, or any exhaustive study of the Russian Church, and yet should give the impressions of a sympathetic observer of some of the chief aspects of Russian Life which are likely to appeal to an English Churchman, I felt that I might venture to attempt it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Weeks in Russia in 1919 On reading my manuscript through, I find it quite surprisingly dull. The one thing that I should have liked to transmit through it seems somehow to have slipped away. I should have liked to explain what was the appeal of the revolution to men like Colonel Robins and myself, both of us men far removed in origin and upbringing from the revolutionary and socialist movements in our own countries. Of course no one who was able, as we were able, to watch the men of the revolution at close quarters could believe for a moment that they were the mere paid agents of the very power which more than all others represented the stronghold they had set out to destroy. We had the knowledge Of the injustice being done to these men to urge us in their defence. But there was more in it than that. There was the feeling, from which we could never escape, of the creative effort of the revolution. There was the thing that distinguishes the creative from other artists, the living, vivifying expression of something hitherto hidden in the consciousness of humanity. If this book were to be an accurate record of my own impressions, all the drudgery, gossip, quarrels, arguments, events and experiences it contains would have to be set against a background of that extraordinary vitality which obstinately persists in Moscow even in these dark days of discomfort, disillusion, pestilence, starvation and unwanted war.
