Book Synopsis Public Safety and Risk Assessment by : David J. Ball
Download or read book Public Safety and Risk Assessment written by David J. Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to encourage a more reflective, multidisciplinary approach to public safety, and the 'reenfranchisement' of those affected by this new phenomenon. Over the past decade health and safety has become a major issue of public interest. There are countless stories of health and safety activities interfering with public life, preventing some beneficial activity from taking place – even creating absurd or dangerous situations. On the one hand, risk assessment, properly conducted, is highly beneficial – it saves lives and prevents injuries. But on the other, it can damage public life. Why has this come about, and does it have to be like that? The authors examine the origins of the problem, look critically at the tools used by safety assessors and their underlying assumptions, and consider important differences between public life and industry (where the approaches largely originated). They illuminate the whole with an analysis of legal requirements, attitudes of stakeholders, and recent research on risk perception and decision making. The result is a profound and important analysis of risk and safety culture and a framework for managing public safety more effectively.

Book Synopsis Investing in the Disadvantaged by : David L. Weimer
Download or read book Investing in the Disadvantaged written by David L. Weimer and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With budgets squeezed at every level of government, cost-benefit analysis (CBA) holds outstanding potential for assessing the efficiency of many programs. In this first book to address the application of CBA to social policy, experts examine ten of the most important policy domains: early childhood development, elementary and secondary schools, health care for the disadvantaged, mental illness, substance abuse and addiction, juvenile crime, prisoner reentry programs, housing assistance, work-incentive programs for the unemployed and employers, and welfare-to-work interventions. Each contributor discusses the applicability of CBA to actual programs, describing both proven and promising examples. The editors provide an introduction to cost-benefit analysis, assess the programs described, and propose a research agenda for promoting its more widespread application in social policy. Investing in the Disadvantaged considers how to face America’s most urgent social needs with shrinking resources, showing how CBA can be used to inform policy choices that produce social value.

Download or read book Blueprint 5 written by Olof Johansson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence has come to light regarding the impact of benzene emissions from road transport, the incidence of asthmatic attacks and the possible toll of particulate matter from diesel engines on human health. This book examines the issues and argues that, without a fundamental change in policy, it is inevitable that the transport sector will continue to impose increasing costs on the natural environment, human health and the economy. It also quantifies the external costs of road transport and suggests new measures, such as road pricing and financial incentives, to pave the way to a sustainable transport system.
Book Synopsis Maintenance Costs and Life Cycle Cost Analysis by : Diego Galar
Download or read book Maintenance Costs and Life Cycle Cost Analysis written by Diego Galar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors have attempted to create coherent chapters and sections on how the fundamentals of maintenance cost should be organized, to present them in a logical and sequential order. Necessarily, the text starts with importance of maintenance function in the organization and moves to life cycle cost (LCC) considerations followed by the budgeting constraints. In the process, they have intentionally postponed the discussion about intangible costs and downtime costs later on in the book mainly due to the controversial part of it when arguing with managers. The book will be concluding with a short description of a number of sectors where maintenance cost is of critical importance. The goal is to train the readers for a deeper study and understanding of these elements for decision making in maintenance, more specifically in the context of asset management. This book is intended for managers, engineers, researchers, and practitioners, directly or indirectly involved in the area of maintenance. The book is focused to contribute towards better understanding of maintenance cost and use of this knowledge to improve the maintenance process. Key Features: • Emphasis on maintenance cost and life cycle cost especially under uncertainty. • Systematic approach of how cost models can be applied and used in the maintenance field. • Compiles and reviews existing maintenance cost models. • Consequential and direct costs considered. • Comparison of maintenance costs in different sectors, infrastructure, manufacturing, transport.

Book Synopsis Foreign Investment in China by : Peter Howard Corne
Download or read book Foreign Investment in China written by Peter Howard Corne and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's legal system is characterized by the gap between law and reality. Focusing on regulatory law, and with reference to the foreign investment area, this book identifies the functional and structural problems within China's administrative legal system that perpetuate this gap. Topics examined in depth include China's unusual hierarchy of legislation, the lack of clear delineation between legal and policy norms, the great scope of discretion accorded to bodies charged with legal interpretation and implementation, the limited scope of judicial review, and the resulting problems of legislative inconsistency and haphazard legal enforcement. The book contends that China's legal system is being built on a faulty and incomplete basis, and that if these problems remain unaddressed, China's legal future is at risk.
Book Synopsis The Valuation of Social Cost (Routledge Revivals) by : David W. Pearce
Download or read book The Valuation of Social Cost (Routledge Revivals) written by David W. Pearce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, The Valuation of Social Cost is concerned both with the idea, and with the practical problems, of placing monetary values on ‘intangible’, non-marketed goods, such as pollution, noise nuisance, personal injury, or the loss of home, neighbours or recreational benefit. A diverse range of contributors critically assess both the theoretical issues and the practical attempts made by economists and others to ‘monetise’ items which cannot be bought or sold. Each section contains a comprehensive literature review and a detailed critical appraisal. Despite being written in the late 70s, this book discusses issues which retain significant importance today.
