La valentía con la que afronta la situación contrasta con la actitud de su hermana Ismene, sumisa al poder establecido. Antígona, por su desobediencia, pagará con su vida, pero arrastrará a Creonte a la desgracia. La obra de Sófocles, especialmente Antígona y Edipo Rey, se ha convertido con el curso del tiempo en el paradigma de la tragedia griega, y sobre ella descansa en gran medida nuestra comprensión de este género y de sus implicaciones filosóficas y religiosas.
