Book excerpt: Although conventional experimental methods, such as quasi-static testing, shake table testing, etc., perform well to evaluate structural seismic performance necessary for modern seismic design, the quasi-static loading and/or reduced scale specimen used in shake table testing may not provide true dynamic responses of structural systems. To overcome these limitations, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) was developed, which is a combination of physical testing of the experimental substructure and analytical simulation of the numerical substructure. With the advancement of hybrid simulation, it is now possible to economically test large to full-scale specimens in laboratories at the real earthquake rate. Online model updating of the numerical substructure model was recently adopted in RTHS for enhanced reliability and accuracy. Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Constrained UKF (CUKF), that can estimate unknown variables using measurements, have been utilized to identify parameters of numerical models in RTHS. This thesis starts with the study of individual parameter’s effect on the Bouc-Wen (BW) and Bouc-Wen-Baber-Noori (BWBN) models hysteresis behavior. To facilitate implementation of RTHS with online Model Updating (RTHSMU), numerical simulations that compare the performance of UKF and CUKF in identifying parameters is conducted. Finally, RTHSMU experiments using UKF and CUKF were carried out for a three-story shear building modeled with the BW model. It is demonstrated from these experiments that adopting online model updating can improve the accuracy of the simulated response of the numerical substructure so an enhanced RTHSMU method is achieved.

When installing new generation equipment, nameplate data will be provided by the contractors to be recorded and documented. Currently, there is a shift to include as much renewable energy generation sources as possible. However, to incorporate these facilities into the modern power system, detailed studies are needed to realize benefits of the new generation. Due to the need for an accurate model of the power system, the WECC and NERC introduced a new policy which states that utilities need to maintain up to date parameters for their systems. Consequently, the common practice is to follow the IEEE 115 standard which requires that the generator is taken offline. Taking a generator offline creates an enormous cost for the generation facility due to the time required to parameterize the machines, so revenue is lost. To regain revenue where possible, methods to parameterize machine while they are online have been explored. This thesis explores algorithms and advises ways to parameterize a generator while it is online. The Joint-Unscented Kalman Filter was chosen to capture the states and estimate the parameters of a salient pole synchronous machine while it is online. The chosen filter algorithm was tested, tuned, and verified against a simulated generator. Furthermore, the Joint-Unscented Kalman filter algorithm was tested on a physical laboratory setup and was compared against IEEE 115 tests conducted on the machine, providing promising results toward further industrial implementation.

The first approach is to swap the ensemble mean for the ensemble mode estimation to improve the covariance calculation in EnKF. The second approach is a coarse scale permeability constraint while updating in EnKF. Both hybrid EnKF approaches are coupled with the streamline based Generalized Travel Time Inversion (GTTI) algorithm for periodic updating of the mean of the ensemble and to sequentially update the ensemble in a hybrid fashion. Through the development of the hybrid EnKF algorithm, the characteristics of the EnKF are also investigated. We found that the limits of the updated values constrain the assimilation results significantly and it is important to assess the measurement error variance to have a proper balance between preserving the prior information and the observation data misfit. Overshooting problems can be mitigated with the streamline based covariance localizations and normal score transformation of the parameters to support the Gaussian error statistics. The swapping mean and mode estimation approach can give us a better matching of the data as long as the mode solution of the inversion process is satisfactory in terms of matching the observation trajectory. The coarse scale permeability constrained hybrid approach gives us better parameter estimation in terms of capturing the main trend of the permeability field and each ensemble member is driven to the posterior mode solution from the inversion process. However the WWCT responses and pressure responses need to be captured through the inversion process to generate physically plausible coarse scale permeability data to constrain hybrid EnKF updating. Uncertainty quantification methods for EnKF were developed to verify the performance of the proposed hybrid EnKF compared to the traditional EnKF. The results show better assimilation quality through a sequence of updating and a stable solution is demonstrated. The potential of the proposed hybrid approaches are promising through the synthetic examples and a field scale application.

The flight control system design is one important part that relies on this modeling. Therefore, it has become more important to develop flight mechanical models that are highly accurate in the whole flight envelope. For today’s modern fighter aircraft, the basic flight mechanical characteristics change between linear and nonlinear as well as stable and unstable as an effect of the desired capability of advanced maneuvering at subsonic, transonic and supersonic speeds. This thesis combines the subject of system identification, which is the art of building mathematical models of dynamical systems based on measurements, with aeronautical engineering in order to find methods for identifying flight mechanical characteristics. Here, some challenging aeronautical identification problems, estimating model parameters from flight-testing, are treated. Two aspects are considered. The first is online identification during flight-testing with the intent to aid the engineers in the analysis process when looking at the flight mechanical characteristics. This will also ensure that enough information is available in the resulting test data for post-flight analysis. Here, a frequency domain method is used. An existing method has been developed further by including an Instrumental Variable approach to take care of noisy data including atmospheric turbulence and by a sensor-fusion step to handle varying excitation during an experiment. The method treats linear systems that can be both stable and unstable working under feedback control. An experiment has been performed on a radio-controlled demonstrator aircraft. For this, multisine input signals have been designed and the results show that it is possible to perform more time-efficient flight-testing compared with standard input signals. The other aspect is post-flight identification of nonlinear characteristics. Here the properties of a parameterized observer approach, using a prediction-error method, are investigated. This approach is compared with four other methods for some test cases. It is shown that this parameterized observer approach is the most robust one with respect to noise disturbances and initial offsets. Another attractive property is that no user parameters have to be tuned by the engineers in order to get the best performance. All methods in this thesis have been validated on simulated data where the system is known, and have also been tested on real flight test data. Both of the investigated approaches show promising results.

This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results. The contents of Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background.
