Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 691: Mix Design Practices for Warm-Mix Asphalt explores a mix design method tailored to the unique material properties of warm mix asphalt technologies. Warm mix asphalt (WMA) refers to asphalt concrete mixtures that are produced at temperatures approximately 50°F (28°C) or more cooler than typically used in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA). The goal of WMA is to produce mixtures with similar strength, durability, and performance characteristics as HMA using substantially reduced production temperatures. There are important environmental and health benefits associated with reduced production temperatures including lower greenhouse gas emissions, lower fuel consumption, and reduced exposure of workers to asphalt fumes. Lower production temperatures can also potentially improve pavement performance by reducing binder aging, providing added time for mixture compaction, and allowing improved compaction during cold weather paving. Appendices to NCHRP Report 691 include the following. Appendices A, B, and D are included in the printed and PDF version of the report. Appendices C and E are available only online.

To that end, the mechanical properties and performance characteristics of the two mixtures (i.e., SLX and SPH) were compared by carrying out laboratory tests such as dynamic modulus test, dynamic creep test, static creep-recovery test, semi-circular bending test, and Hamburg wheel tracking test. The laboratory test results were also used to characterize the material properties for pavement performance prediction simulation. Structural performance analysis was conducted using the MEPDG and finite element method in order to compare the pavement structures with the two different mixtures (i.e., SLX and SPH). In addition, a life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) was performed to compare the economic benefits associated with the thin-lift overlay to the conventional overlay practice. This provided insights into how the thin asphalt overlay with the SLX mixture behaved compared to the previous practice, which replaced the old asphalt with the SPH mixture. Laboratory results clearly showed that the SLX mixture behaved similarly to the SPH mixture in terms of mixture stiffness, rutting potential, and cracking resistance. However, the Hamburg wheel tracking test found that the SLX mixture had greater moisture susceptibility, a result that requires more investigation. Pavement performance simulation results from finite element analysis showed that the rutting and cracking potential of the pavement with SLX thin overlay mixture was lower than the pavement with SPH mixture. MEPDG simulations predicted that both pavements would perform satisfactorily during their expected design life, but the LCCA indicated that the practice of using the thin SLX preservation technique can reduce both the agency’s and user’s costs compared to the conventional SPH rehabilitation practice. Both performance prediction results need to be compared to actual field performance data. Only one-year field performance is available to date, which needs to be continuously monitored to judge how both pavement structures perform" (page i).

Book excerpt: Balanced mix design (BMD) is an alternative concept for designing asphalt mixtures that mainly focuses on performance of mixtures rather than only volumetric analysis. Using this concept, it would be possible to account for the incorporation of recycled asphalt mixtures, warm technology, polymers, rejuvenators, and other foreign additives, as well as external effective factors on the mix design such as environmental effects. This project sought to investigate performance-based methodologies for the asphalt mix design by taking a step to develop a preliminary Nebraska BMD framework. With that, selection of appropriate performance tests, finding a functional laboratory aging protocol, and defining performance test criteria were the main long-term goals developed in this phase of study. To this end, three main types of distresses were taken into consideration (rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture susceptibility), and a set of performance tests including well-established tests (Hamburg Wheel Track (HWT), Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT), Tensile Strength Ration (TSR)) and surrogate tests (IDEAL-RT, HT-IDT, G-stability, IDEAL-CT) were selected to capture these distresses on two types of high-performance commonly used asphalt mixtures in Nebraska (SLX and SPR). For the fatigue cracking analysis, long-term aging conditioning was conducted using two common aging protocols (NCHRP 09-54 and NCAT). Three types of data were utilized in this study including laboratory performance test results for the lab-compacted and field core specimens, as well as field data based on pavement surface condition monitoring. The validity of the surrogate performance tests was accomplished not only by correlating the field core results with field condition data, but also with correlating every individual surrogate test result to that of a well-established test. Further, the sensitivity, practicality, cost-effectiveness, and variability of different tests were assessed using statistical

Book excerpt: In this project, a comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the laboratory performance of foamed WMA mixtures with regard to permanent deformation, moisture-induced damage, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature (thermal) cracking; and compare it to traditional HMA. In addition, the workability of foamed WMA and HMA mixtures was evaluated using a new device that was designed and fabricated at the University of Akron, and the compactability of both mixtures was examined by analyzing compaction data collected using the Superpave gyratory compactor. The effect of the temperature reduction, foaming water content, and aggregate moisture content on the performance of foamed WMA was also investigated. Furthermore, the rutting performance of plant-produced foamed WMA and HMA mixtures was evaluated in the Ohio University (OU) Accelerated Pavement Load Facility (APLF), and the long-term performance of pavement structures constructed using foamed WMA and HMA surface and intermediate courses was analyzed using the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). The laboratory test results revealed comparable resistance to permanent deformation, moisture-induced damage, and fatigue cracking for foamed WMA and HMA mixtures. However, the HMA mixtures had significantly higher ITS values at 14°F (-10°C) and comparable failure strains to the foamed WMA mixtures, which indicates that the traditional HMA mixtures have better resistance to low-temperature (thermal) cracking. The laboratory tests conducted to evaluate the effect of the temperature reduction, foaming water content, and aggregate moisture content revealed that the performance of foamed WMA mixtures prepared using 30°F (16.7°C) temperature reduction, 1.8% foaming water content, and fully dried aggregates was comparable to that of the HMA mixtures. However, reducing the production temperature of foamed WMA resulted in increased susceptibility to permanent deformation and moisture-induced damage. In addition, producing foamed WMA using moist aggregates resulted in inadequate aggregate coating leading to concerns with regard to long-term durability. Increasing the foaming water content (up to 2.6% of the weight of the asphalt binder) did not seem to have a negative effect on the rutting performance or moisture sensitivity of the foamed WMA. The rut depth measurements obtained at the OU APLF confirmed the laboratory APA test results. It was found through these tests that the foamed WMA mixtures have comparable rutting resistance to the HMA mixtures. Finally, the long-term pavement performance predictions obtained using the MEPDG showed comparable service lives for pavement structures constructed using foamed WMA and HMA surface and intermediate mixtures.
