Book excerpt: This study examined whether the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles, using photogrammetry and 3D modeling software, could provide rock slope design and remediation recommendations comparable to traditional geologic structure mapping methods using handheld transit compasses and measuring tapes. The authors found that the unmanned aerial systems methods as tested are highly and immediately implementable while offering benefits in both cost and safety. Seven hazardous rock slope sites were selected across Virginia. They varied in terms of highway type, traffic volume, rock type, geologic structure, challenges to flight operations, and more. Unmanned aerial systems captured video, overlapping photographs, and some LiDAR data, from which 3D digital models, orthophoto mosaics, and more were generated. Geologic structure data were extracted virtually from the 3D models and compared with rock structure data collected using ground-based geologic field methods. Data from unmanned systems proved as statistically reliable as those from traditional rock structure data collection methods. The study recommends that VDOT take the necessary steps to accommodate unmanned aerial systems to support geologic structure mapping for rock slope design and remediation activities.

There are many areas in the underground mining environment that cannot be accessed by personnel due to the high potential for ground fall and insufficient ground support. By combining unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with technologies such as photogrammetry and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanners, 3D point clouds can be created for inaccessible sites. A 3D digital point cloud can provide valuable geotechnical information such as the ability to measure discontinuities, inspect rock conditions, generate accurate volume estimates, and obtain a georeferenced geometry of the inaccessible opening.There are many challenges to operating UAVs and collecting high-quality imagery in underground environments including poor lighting and visibility, dust, water, confined spaces, air turbulence, and a lack of GPS coverage for navigation and stability. Due to the difficult flying conditions and GPS-denied environment, several companies are developing UAVs with LiDAR-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to enhance the obstacle detection and avoidance capabilities of the platforms and minimize the potential for a collision.The objective of this research was to develop a methodology that can be used to evaluate UAV-based imaging tools designed to fly in underground environments. A series of demonstrations was designed to test the functionalities of available UAVs and to identify the most effective platforms for collecting UAV-based photogrammetric imagery in an underground mine. Each of the four participating teams was challenged to fly their UAV-based systems (Hovermap, Elios, M2, Ranger/Batonomous) in underground drifts and long-hole stopes while capturing high-quality imagery that could be used to create a 3D digital photogrammetric model of the opening. The demonstrations were held at Barrick Gold Corporation's Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) in Whitehall, MT.The systems were evaluated based upon the performance of the collision avoidance (or recovery) system in the underground environment and the quality and accuracy of the data provided. By successfully completing the underground flights and demonstrating well-developed SLAM-based collision avoidance, the Hovermap system proved to be the most reliable, robust, and easily controllable system. The Elios system, relying on collision recovery rather than avoidance, is an affordable alternative for flights in difficult environments. The imagery collected by each system was used to generate photogrammetric point clouds using three software packages: Agisoft PhotoScan, Bentley ContextCapture, and Pix4Dmapper. The point clouds were qualitatively compared based on completeness and detail and quantitatively evaluated for accuracy by comparing the geometry of the point cloud to LiDAR scans of the stopes. Based on the results of the qualitative comparison, the point clouds considered in the accuracy evaluation were built using the photogrammetry software Bentley ContextCapture. When the photogrammetric point clouds were compared with the LiDAR point clouds (assumed to be an accurate baseline reference), the mean error values ranged between 0.47 and 2.86 feet. Despite the different conditions and locations in which the imagery was collected for each model, the observed error varies by less than one order of magnitude. Improvements in the coverage and overlap of the imagery as well as in the method used for georeferencing could further increase the accuracy of the photogrammetric point clouds.

Previous knowledge about the behavior of the Earth's surface under the incidence different wavelengths of energy has been successfully applied to a large amount of data recorded from UAVs, thereby increasing the special and temporal resolution of the products obtained. More specifically, the ability of UAVs to be positioned in the air at pre-programmed coordinate points; to track flight paths; and in any case, to record the coordinates of the sensor position at the time of the shot and at the pitch, yaw, and roll angles have opened an interesting field of applications for low-altitude aerial photogrammetry, known as UAV photogrammetry. In addition, photogrammetric data processing has been improved thanks to the combination of new algorithms, e.g., structure from motion (SfM), which solves the collinearity equations without the need for any control point, producing a cloud of points referenced to an arbitrary coordinate system and a full camera calibration, and the multi-view stereopsis (MVS) algorithm, which applies an expanding procedure of sparse set of matched keypoints in order to obtain a dense point cloud. The set of technical advances described above allows for geometric modeling of terrain surfaces with high accuracy, minimizing the need for topographic campaigns for georeferencing of such products. This Special Issue aims to compile some applications realized thanks to the synergies established between new remote sensing from close distances and UAV photogrammetry.

Book excerpt: Rock fracture properties contribute significantly to rock slope stability across a range of lithological settings in New Zealand, and globally. However, there is often limited access to outcrops due to the hazards involved, which limits traditional field exposure mapping/logging. This project uses Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry to model selected rocky cliffs along Auckland's coast and then uses Sirovision software to delineate and model fractures. Fracture properties extracted from Sirovision can then be used for Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modelling, which was used to assess the stability of the exposed slopes. The results show that this can be an effective approach for conducting realistic rock stability modelling at poorly accessible sites. However, there are limitations to the workflow of UAV photogrammetry and Sirovision. In particular, it is problematic to characterise fracture roughness, waviness, strength and spacing in Sirovision, given the resolutions involved. Nevertheless, the application of this method has great potential for rock stability modelling of natural slopes, tunnels, quarries, mines, or excavations where accessibility is an issue.

Modern day remote sensing kicked off with the invention of the camera and continued on to the invention of advanced satellite mounted sensors. Photogrammetry is defined as a science that measures distances using one or more images captured remotely. Remote collection of images within a range of 1000 ft is termed close-range photogrammetry (CRP).Unmanned aerial vehicle systems (UAV or UAS) have become a popular means of remotely gathering information and assessing infrastructure conditions due to their versatile nature. Multirotor and fixed-wing are two types of UAVs that are frequently used in field operations. Close-range photogrammetry (CRP) using UAVs can generate dense point cloud images, orthomosaics, digital elevation models (DEMs), and digital terrain models (DTMs) in a short time period. Analyses of these models help transportation engineers and agencies to understand the infrastructure health conditions. Several studies have addressed UAV-CRP surveys for infrastructure health condition assessments primarily due to restrictions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on UAV studies and their operations in the field. After the introduction of Part 107exemption of UAV operations by FAA in August 2016, more studies have been planned and performed with UAVs, evaluating their abilities to perform infrastructure condition assessments. In the present research, the UAV-CRP technology using a hexacopter was primarily used to conduct infrastructure monitoring and assessments. As a part of the research, a comprehensive literature review of remote sensing and photogrammetry studies, UAV-related research by different states' departments of transportation, calibration checks for different accessories, as well as research on pavement and bridge infrastructure management was conducted. Then, a comprehensive calibration study was performed by conducting total system error analysis on both the UAV as well as accessories used in the research. This unique calibration analysis provided a much-needed understanding of how environmental conditions, including field temperature conditions, lens temperatures, flight altitudes, humidity, and different overlap conditions influence the quality of images captured as well as three-dimensional dense point cloud models generated using these images. Later, UAV-CRP technology was used in various infrastructure inspection studies owing to its multifaceted benefits. UAV-CRP studies on pavement sections showed they could provide pavement distress data including information on longitudinal and transverse cracks, permanent deformation or rutting, as well as pavement characteristics such as longitudinal and cross-slope values, and sight distances at crossings. All the photogrammetry-based imaging analyses yielded results that are in agreement with other traditional methods. UAV-CRP studies performed on various construction material stock piles yielded volume results matching with ground truth measurements from traditional field survey results. Bridge sites were inspected using UAVs equipped with both top and bottom gimbals to provide a complete 360° view of the bridge including substructure and superstructure elements. UAV-CRP results can provide condition assessments on approach slab settlements, movements and cracking in abutment and wing walls, bridge foundation conditions, columns, and under-bridge decks as well as upper deck. UAV-CRP studies conducted on rail corridors also proved that the photogrammetry results could be used to evaluate encroachments at crossings, and washout site detection including an appraisal of factors that may have contributed to washouts. UAVs were also used for emergency operations immediately after a hurricane event and proved its value in providing debris assessments in post disaster reconnaissance studies performed in Beaumont, Texas. A preliminary cost analysis indicates that UAV-CRP technology could provide an inexpensive way of monitoring infrastructure conditions and gathering valuable data related to infrastructure-related annual and biennial rating surveys. All the procedures, analyses, and results indicate the UAV-CRP tool provides a quick, efficient, and safe method for assessing infrastructure health conditions.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of ISRM suggested methods for testing or measuring properties of rocks and rock masses both in the laboratory and in situ, as well as for monitoring the performance of rock engineering structures. The first collection (Yellow Book) has been published in 1981. In order to provide access to all the Suggested Methods in one volume, the ISRM Blue Book was published in 2007 (by the ISRM via the Turkish National Group) and contains the complete set of Suggested Methods from 1974 to 2006 inclusive. The papers in this most recent volume have been published during the last seven years in international journals, mainly in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. They offer guidance for rock characterization procedures and laboratory and field testing and monitoring in rock engineering. These methods provide a definitive procedure for the identification, measurement and evaluation of one or more qualities, characteristics or properties of rocks or rock systems that produces a test result.

Book excerpt: Small, commercially available unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are an emergent threat to Navy continental U.S. (CONUS) military facilities. There are many counter unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) tools focused on neutralization, and many sensors in place. A system-of-systems, defense-in-depth approach to C-UAS requires a central system to connect these new and existing systems. The central system uses data fusion and threat evaluation and weapons assignment (TEWA) to properly address threats. This report follows a systems engineering process to develop a software architecture for that central system, beginning with a requirements analysis, a functional baseline, and the resulting module allocation. A series of simulations in ExtendSim derives the performance requirements by examining the overall C-UAS scenario with currently available technology. Through a sensitivity analysis, the simulation shows that effective engagement range (combination of initial target range, detection range and neutralization range) is the dominant factor driving response time.
