Book excerpt: The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey scores at an inpatient health care facility in Southern California, and specifically for this acute care medical-surgical unit, have been consistently lower than state and national levels. The top box scores associated with patient experience (satisfaction) are unsatisfactory for this unit. To improve the patient satisfaction scores at the unit level with the long-term goal of bringing improvement to all units, the unit implemented two evidence-based practice strategies: intentional rounding and bedside shift reporting. The overall aim was to improve HCAHPS survey scores. This direct practice improvement (DPI) project evaluated the effectiveness of intentional rounding and bedside shift reporting on call light or bell usage and patient satisfaction. We carried out this project was carried out using quantitative methodology and pretest-posttest design with nonrandomization and nonequivalent groups design, along with participatory action research (PAR) methodology. The results indicated that at Îł = .05 and a power analysis of 1.000, the mean patients' call light data were 59.93 and 43.89 counts for pre-implementation and post-implementation, respectively (p
