Inspection process is critical to all the industries as it ensures that a good quality product reach at the end customers. In order to ensure minimum variation in the quality of inspection of a product, industries rely on advanced equipment or gauge to measure the quality parameters of the product. The accuracy of inspection depends a lot on the method and equipments used to inspect a product. However, at AvCarb material solutions, a product called pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS) is manufactured and at present the types of defects that occur during their manufacturing process can only be identified visually. The problem with using human senses as a tool to perform an inspection is that the accuracy and speed of the inspection vary from person to person based on their experience, their state of mind and other human factors. Automating a visual inspection system ensures minimum variation in the accuracy and speed of an inspection process. This thesis proposes the use of the automatic vision system to perform visual inspection of PGS. The document presents how some software tools can be used to identify and quantify the defects generated on PGS and gives a comparison of the accuracy of identifying a defect through the automatic vision system and accuracy achieved through human inspection.

Competitive quality performance still eludes many manufacturers in the traditional industrialized countries. A lack of quality competitiveness is one of the root causes of the relative industrial decline and consequent trade imbalances which plague some Western economies. Many explanations are advanced for poor quality performance. Inadequate levels of investment in advanced technology, together with insufficient education and training of the workforce, are perhaps the most prominent. Some believe these problems are caused by a lack of awareness and commitment from top management, while others point to differences between industrial cultures. The established remedy is known as Total Quality Management (TQM). TQM requires a corporate culture change, driven from the top, and involving every employee in a process of never-ending quality improvement aimed at internal as well as external customers. The techniques deployed to achieve TQM include measures to improve motivation, training in problem-solving and statistical process control (SPC). Quality is, however, only one of the competitive pressures placed It is also upon the manufacturer by the modem global economy. imperative to remain economical and efficient, while increasing the flexibility and responsiveness of the design and manufacturing functions. Here the reduction or elimination of stock is of great importance, particularly as financial interest rates in the less successful manufacturing nations are frequently high. Product life cycles must become ever more compressed in response to the phenomenal design to-manufacture performance of some Pacific rim economies.

This inspection remains largely a manual process conducted by operators, and thus faces considerable limitations that make it unreliable. Therefore, it is necessary to automatize this inspection for better efficiency. The main goal of this thesis is to design an automatic visual inspection system for surface inspection and monitoring. The specific application of wheel inspection is considered to study the design and installation setup of the imaging system. Then, two inspection methods are developed: a defect detection method on the product's surface and a change-point detection method in the parameters of the non-stationary inspection process. Because in an industrial context it is necessary to control the false alarm rate, the two proposed methods are cast into the framework of hypothesis testing theory. A parametric approach is proposed to model the non-anomalous part of the observations. The model parameters are estimated to design a statistical test whose performances are analytically known. Finally, the impact of illumination degradation on the defect detection performance is studied in order to predict the maintenance needs of the imaging system. Numerical results on a large set of real images highlight the relevance of the proposed approach.

Book excerpt: Development in industry is an important factor to increasing the production rate and quality inspection time. The automatic inspection vision system gives the real-time inspection for product. This work shows the design of an automatic inspection vision system. The principle work of area scan camera is to compare image capturing with the base image for product surface which already stored in the host-computer. This comparison will decide if the product will pass or will be rejected. The required results then can be implemented by using the Matlab software to compare the images. The accepted and rejected operations are controlled by the microcontroller (PIC16F84A) that regulates the product rejection after the image processing. The principle work of line scan camera is scanning the product surface via multi-line capturing through multi-triggers generated by the encoder. The defect detection is obtained by the difference in the light intensity for the surface of product with defect or not; Where the results are shown graphically by the LabVIEW software. The results of the line scan and the area scan are dependent on the intensity of light reflected from the product surface.

Book excerpt: Vision plays a fundamental role for living beings by allowing them to interact with the environment in an effective and efficient way. The ultimate goal of Machine Vision is to endow artificial systems with adequate capabilities to cope with not a priori predetermined situations. To this end, we have to take into account the computing constraints of the hosting architectures and the specifications of the tasks to be accomplished, to continuously adapt and optimize the visual processing techniques. Nevertheless, by exploiting the low?cost computational power of off?the?shell computing devices, Machine Vision is not limited any more to industrial environments, where situations and tasks are simplified and very specific, but it is now pervasive to support system solutions of everyday life problems.

Book excerpt: Smart Inspection Systems: Techniques and Applications of Intelligent Vision will enable engineers to understand the various stages of automated visual inspection (AVI) and how artificial intelligence can be incorporated into each stage to create "smart" inspection systems. The book contains many examples that illustrate and explain the application of conventional and artificial intelligence techniques in AVI. The text covers the whole AVI process, from illumination, image enhancement, segmentation and feature extraction, through to classification, and includes case studies of implemented AVI systems as well as reviews of commercially available inspection systems. Each chapter concludes with exercises. This book will be of interest to users and developers of commercial industrial inspection systems as well as researchers in the fields of machine vision, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing engineering.
