Download or read book School and Teacher Characteristics which Influence the Teaching of Applied Academics written by Dale Charles Ridder and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if internal characteristics of schools were perceived differently for schools where teachers taught applied academic courses and schools where teachers did not teach applied academic courses after attending applied academics training approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; and to ascertain if there were other characteristics of the teacher or the school that influence the acceptance and implementation of instruction in applied academics. Procedures. The population was all teachers trained in applied academic teaching methods by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Staff Assessment Questionnaire was sent to the 396 secondary teachers trained to teach first-year applied academics in 1995. Two follow-up contacts were made. Discussion of findings. The MANOVA results showed that none of the nine quality indicators yielded a F-value significant at the.05 level of significance. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not rejected. There was no significant difference between the mean SAQ factor scores for any of the nine quality factors of those schools where teachers taught applied academic courses and those schools where teachers did not teach applied academic courses after attending applied academics training during 1995. Four characteristics of individual teachers and schools that were statistically significant were the educational level of the teacher, the number of years the teacher had taught, the number of grade levels in the building, and the percent of recommended equipment available to the teachers. Conclusions. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Teacher perceptions of the internal characteristics of their schools will have little relationship to whether they teach an applied academics course after receiving training. (2) Teachers with less graduate hours and who are in their early years of teaching are more likely to teach applied academic courses. (3) The more grade levels a school contains and the higher the percentage of needed equipment available, the more likely the teachers are to teach applied academic courses.
