Book excerpt: El progresivo abandono de las prácticas tradicionales en el monte, y por tanto la acumulación de combustible forestal en el monte, hacen que las condiciones para que puedan producirse Grandes Incendios Forestales aumenten. Para mejorar la eficacia de los dispositivos contra incendios, es imprescindible saber qué ha sucedido durante el incendio, para lo que es básico conocer el comportamiento del fuego a lo largo del mismo, así como las distintas condiciones que se ha ido encontrando en cada momento. Esto permitirá valorar las actuaciones realizadas por los medios de extinción y diseñar planes de ataque alternativos a posteriori, para que cuando se den incendios de similares características ayuden a tomar las decisiones adecuadas. Esta tesis se encuadra dentro de este contexto y tiene como objetivo aportar una nueva metodología para reconstruir los incendios a través del establecimiento de las isócronas en los distintos periodos del mismo. En cuanto a la metodología para la elaboración de isócronas, se buscó la manera de poder aprovechar la gran cantidad de fotografías que se realizan durante el incendio, principalmente por parte de los técnicos que van transportados en aeronaves y sobre todo el situado a bordo del Avión de Coordinación. Estas fotografías necesitan de un proceso de selección, clasificación por periodos y por último de georreferenciación, para dotarla de datos geográficos que nos permita establecer el perímetro del incendio en los distintos periodos del mismo. Una vez georreferenciadas se digitaliza el perímetro y se repite el proceso con las distintas isócronas determinadas, que va a depender del número y momento de las fotografías realizadas. La metodología descrita en esta tesis se ha aplicado a dos incendios forestales reales ocurridos en la provincia de Almería en el año 2009, el ocurrido en Níjar el 28 de junio de 1.098,26 ha y el ocurrido en Turre el 14 de julio de 4.609,21 ha. Las isócronas obtenidas de los distintos incendios forestales analizados han permitido tener información del avance del incendio en fases intermedias de los mismos, pudiendo analizar parámetros del incendio y del comportamiento del fuego como la superficie quemada en cada periodo y el perímetro generado, la velocidad de propagación del fuego (ROS), la velocidad en generar perímetro y superficie quemada o determinar cuál fue el motor del incendio en estas fases ya que se puede correlar con las distintas variables que intervienen en estas fases como son la orografía de la zona, el combustible forestal (biomasa presente en la zona con potencial para arder), o variables meteorológicas como: el viento, la temperatura o la humedad relativa.

Beadle In contrast to the more sta bie oceans, inland waters are, on the geological time scale, short-lived and are subject to great fluctuations in chemical composition and physical features. Very few lakes and rivers have existed continuously for more than a million years, and the life of the majority is to be measured in thousands or less. Earth movements, erosion and long-term climatic changes in the past have caused many of them to appear and disappear. No wonder then that most freshwater organism are especially adapted to great changes and many even to temporary extinction of their environment. Recent studies of residual sediments from existing and extinct lakes in tropical Africa have told us much about their age and the past history of their faunas and floras, from which we may deduce something about the climate and the conditions in the water in the past. The forces that have formed and moulded the African Great Lakes have been catastrophic in their violence and effects. They are not yet finished, but the present rate of change is, in human terms, too slow for direct observation of the ecological effects. The large man-made lakes are providing very good opportunities for studying the chemi cal and biological consequences of the initial filling but, once filled, they are artificially protected against major fluctuations.
