Book excerpt: Most biotelemetry applications deal with the moderated data rates of biological signals. Few people have studied the problem of transcutaneous data transmission at the rates required by NASA's Life Sciences-Advanced BioTelemetry System (LS-ABTS). Implanted telemetry eliminate the problems associated with wire breaking the skin, and permits experiments with awake and unrestrained subjects. Our goal is to build a low-power 174-216MHz Radio Frequency (RF) transmitter suitable for short range biosensor and implantable use. The BioLink Implantable Telemetry System (BITS) is composed of three major units: an Analog Data Module (ADM), a Telemetry Transmitter Module (TTM), and a Command Receiver Module (CRM). BioLink incorporates novel low-power techniques to implement a monolithic digital RF transmitter operating at 100kbps, using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation in the 174-216MHz ISM band. As the ADM will be specific for each application, we focused on solving the problems associated with a monolithic implementation of the TTM and CRM, and this is the emphasis of this report. A system architecture based on a Frequency-Locked Loop (FLL) Frequency Synthesizer is presented, and a novel differential frequency that eliminates the need for a frequency divider is also shown. A self sizing phase modulation scheme suitable for low power implementation was also developed. A full system-level simulation of the FLL was performed and loop filter parameters were determined. The implantable antenna has been designed, simulated and constructed. An implant package compatible with the ABTS requirements is also being proposed. Extensive work performed at 200MHz in 0.5um complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS) showed the feasibility of integrating the RF transmitter circuits in a single chip. This research focuses on the design of a wireless telemetry system architecture, intended to retrieve blood pressure and volume data. A physical prototype is created that is 2.475 cm3 and weights 4.01 g. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the development of a compact and efficient antenna as the most important factor in an implantable wireless biomedical telemetry system. Significant challenges exist in the UHF implementation because of the electromagnetic (EM) wave interactions with the surrounding biological tissue, complexity of the biological tissue, the need for antenna miniaturization, and power minimization of the implantable device and biocompatability requirements. This dissertation presents the designs, implementations and validations of a few implantable planar inverted-F antennas (I-PIFAs). They all have full ground planes, as opposed to the partial ground plane of the original free-space antenna for a RFID system under development, to maximize the energy radiated out of the body and to minimize that into the body. Yet the developed antennas are much smaller than the original free-space antenna located on a RFID tag. The antennas performance were evaluated by studying the bandwidth impedance, radiation pattern and input reflection coefficient characteristics inside the rat body model. To monitor a physiological signal (temperature) from rat skin remotely, one of the proposed antennas was attached to the implantable RFID tag circuit board. In addition, proximity feed technique was applied to the antennas for widening bandwidth (BW) as detuning of the operational frequency of the implanted antenna occurs due to the effect of bio-compatible coating material as well as rat tissue.

Book excerpt: A wireless biomedical telemetry system is a device that collects biomedical signal measurements and transmits data through wireless RF communication. Testing medical treatments often involves experimentation on small laboratory animals, such as genetically modified mice and rats. Using batteries as a power source results in many practical issues, such as increased size of the implant and limited operating lifetime. Wireless power harvesting for implantable biomedical devices removes the need for batteries integrated into the implant. This will reduce device size and remove the need for surgical replacement due to battery depletion. Resonant inductive coupling achieves wireless power transfer in a manner modelled by a step down transformer. With this methodology, power harvesting for an implantable device is realized with the use of a large primary coil external to the subject, and a smaller secondary coil integrated into the implant. The signal received from the secondary coil must be regulated to provide a stable direct current (DC) power supply, which will be used to power the electronics in the implantable device. The focus of this work is on development of an electronic front-end for wireless powering of an implantable biomedical device. The energy harvesting front-end circuit is comprised of a rectifier, LDO regulator, and a temperature insensitive voltage reference. Physical design of the front-end circuit is developed in 0.13um CMOS technology with careful attention to analog layout issues. Post-layout simulation results are presented for each sub-block as well as the full front-end structure. The LDO regulator operates with supply voltages in the range of 1V to 1.5V with quiescent current of 10.5uA The complete power receiver front-end has a power conversion efficiency of up to 29%.
