Book Synopsis Latin America and Underdevelopment by : Andre Gunder Frank
Download or read book Latin America and Underdevelopment written by Andre Gunder Frank and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his second book, Andre Gunder Frank expands on the theme presented in his influential study Capitalism and Underdevelopment in Latin America. It is the colonial structure of world capitalism, in his view, which produced and maintains the underdevelopment characteristic of Latin America and the rest of the Third World. This colonial structure penetrates everywhere in Latin America, forming and transforming all its features in obedience to its own imperatives and thereby imposing upon the region those characteristic features of poverty and backwardness which are not primarily the remnants of an ancient "feudal" past but the direct products of capitalism. This development of underdevelopment will persist, Frank argues, until the people of Latin America free themselves from world capitalism by means of revolution.
Book Synopsis How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by : Walter Rodney
Download or read book How Europe Underdeveloped Africa written by Walter Rodney and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic work of political, economic, and historical analysis, powerfully introduced by Angela Davis In his short life, the Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, South America, the African continent, and the Caribbean. In each locale, Rodney found himself a lightning rod for working class Black Power. His deportation catalyzed 20th century Jamaica's most significant rebellion, the 1968 Rodney riots, and his scholarship trained a generation how to think politics at an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated. In his magnum opus, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Rodney incisively argues that grasping "the great divergence" between the west and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. This meticulously researched analysis of the abiding repercussions of European colonialism on the continent of Africa has not only informed decades of scholarship and activism, it remains an indispensable study for grasping global inequality today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive reader brings together seminal articles on development in Latin America. Tracing the concepts and major debates surrounding the issue, the text focuses on development theory through three contrasting historical perspectives: imperialism, underdevelopment and dependency, and globalization. By offering a rich array of essays from Latin American Perspectives, the book allows students to sample all the important trends in the field. A new general introduction and conclusion, along with part introductions, contextualize each selection. One of the leading figures in development studies, Ronald Chilcote shows in this text why work on imperialism dating to the turn of the twentieth century informs the controversies on dependency and underdevelopment during the 1960s and 1970s as well as the globalization debates of the past decade. If students are to understand development in Latin America, they must not only be familiar with historical examples and recognize that various theoretical perspectives affect our interpretation of events, they must be willing to keep an open mind. Thus, rather than setting out established premises, this reader offers different points of view, raising provocative questions about Latin America that remain largely unanswered even today. Students will come away from this rewarding collection ready to pursue new understanding through critical inquiry and thinking.

Book Synopsis Imperialism and Dependency by : Daniel A. Offiong
Download or read book Imperialism and Dependency written by Daniel A. Offiong and published by Fourth Dimension Publishing Company. This book was released on 1980 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author sees the two related and persistent phenomena of imperialism and dependency as the crucial factors of underdevelopment in Africa, and in the developing world generally. He argues that foreign aid aggravates historical dependency stemming from imperialism and now rooted in poverty, and that the neo-liberal economic order, which promotes investment driven growth by the so- called multi-nationals, compounds the problem. He focuses on the role played by the CIA in the US in promoting the interests of the multinational or rather American dominated companies in underdeveloped areas of the world, in service of the US national economic interest. These processes depend on the collaborating bourgeoisie of the developing world who benefit, to the detriment of meaningful grassroots-led development.
